With a big lead among women and black likely voters, Democrat Barack Obama leads Republican John McCain in a new national presidential poll.

Obama leads 54-40 percent among women voters and 93-2 percent among black voters. McCain leads 50-43 percent with men and 52-43 percent among white voters.

A Harvard degree doesn’t equal good performance. W has a degree from Yale. But Obama and Biden clearly are intelligent and knowledgeable. McCain doesn’t really seem to know what he’s talking about half the time and Palin just seems clueless about most things. I don’t put much stock in political ads. I read newspaper articles, news magazines, TV reports, whatever I can find, and Obama/Biden just seem to be the best way to go. I am looking forward to the debates, but am definitely for Obama/Biden at this point.By Ben

The Debates will decide this election. Obama better step up what he looked like at Saddleback or McCain will win by 10 points. Whatever happened to his “anytime, anyplace” stance on debating McCain? I guess that was part of Obama’s poltical “fine-tuning” (aka lies and doubletalk) that he does.By Leslie

ESC, current national unemplyment level is 6.1%, 5% is considered about what unemployment is at best (changing jobs, the unemployable (prisoners, insane, etc..), students, etc..). The great depression, which Obama loves to compare this economy too, which is moronic, had national unemployment levels of 25%. Obama is trying to make you scared of the economy, not an active participant in it. If his corporate tax increases take effect, look for unemployment to get over 10% within 2 years. You raise taxes in a rapidly growing economy, not in the current situation. As for education, with all that education, Barrack Obama is 47 years old and still has no significant accomplishments besides getting elected to progressively higher offices and voting “present”. Palin and her non ivy league education has actually made an impact on peoples lives for the better. McCain has served his country and passed meaningful legislation in his time. Ted Kaszinsky had a great education as well, maybe the Unibomber should be his secretary of state.By TRS

And therein lies your disdain for the free market system Alice. It seems you believe strongly that government can cure anything and everything. So, lets look at how well the government has done with the things you mention. Education? rates poorly when compared with other nations? How well have they done with the SSN funds? Not very - its currently a ponzi scheme waiting for the shoe to drop. The financial system breakdown can be linked back to the Clinton years and government influencing Freddie and Fannie to forgo sound business practice and make credit easy. By the way, the lack of regulation was but one component of the sub prime mess - much of it had to do with Democrats such as Dodd and Frank blocking efforts to tighten up requirements, etc. As an aside, former CEO Franklin Pierce left in ‘05 leaving a mess amid corruption charges, taking with him $100M of salary and bonus. Where is Mr Pierce now? Why he now serves as one of Obama’s economic advisors. Now there’s a guy I’d go to for advice. Freddie and Fannie policies led the way to a feeding frenzy which bled over into the private sector leaving us with the mess we currently have and it all began with government influence on credit markets. How well did that work? Not very! Now you want them involved with healthcare? There already are - its called Medicare/Medicaid. How well have they dealt with Medicare and how solvent is it? Not very well and not solvent at all. And now you are asking us to believe the large government solutions offered by Senator Obama will cure the ills of the nation? Here is a rule of thumb to can count on - where there is a big pile of money, sharks will gather. Senator Obama wants to bring that big pile of money into DC and then made decisions as to how it should be dispursed. Of course, with all the sharks around, there won’t be any political considerations to that will there? Finally, Senator Obama is promoting an overall tax increase on the economy at a time when it is fragile. Any economist worth his salt will tell you thats economic suicide. There is a role for government, but it is not the huge one sought by Senator Obama. You’ll have to pardon my skepticism. And yes, I believe the private sector would do much better with SSN, education and healthcare.By Alice

Young Republican Holly is too young to understand the value of the best education our country has to offer and that being well-educated doesn’t make you an elitist but sticking your nose up at a good education does. I’m sure your parents had wished you had gone to Harvard. Also, I would agree that Holly is likely not voting for McCain based on race because as a young Republican, she understands what it’s like to be in the minority. And Oh-so-Painful, go to realpolitics.com and you’ll see that Obama is up in all the polls except for one. I guess it’s just more liberal bias from the DDN since they didn’t publish that one poll. Leslie and every other paranoid delusional out there that overuse the words socialist/communist/marxist/terrorist and don’t know the meaning: by your definition of “socialist”, this is already a socialist country because most of us support and pay taxes for public education and social security. The alternative? Privatize social security, privatize education, do nothing about healthcare and the free market will work it all out!By Michael

Holly, Obama not only has a Harvard Law degree, his BA from Columbia had an emphasis on international studies. Obama is well traveled and definitely has a world view. Palin has a BA in Journalism that took her 5 years and 5 small colleges to obtain. She’s only gone across the pond once, just last year. It’s crazy to have someone with her inexperience a heartbeat away with McCain being 72.By holly

To “the real reason”: You are exactly the reason why I am proud to say I’m a young republican. I wouldn’t associate myself in the same political party with someone as narrow-minded as you. I could care less what his race is. I guess all of you dems think the same. Yes, let’s take a look at his credentials: Harvard. So just because someone graduated from Harvard makes them a good candidate for president of the united states? I’d like to know what International Affairs experience he has? As the facts continue to come out about Palin, and McCain continues to demonstrate his lack of understanding about the economy, Obama will start to pull away. If people look at the education of the candidates, their plans and the issues, this race shouldn’t be close. Obama is clearly the choice to turn things around. McCain just doesn’t get it, and Palin is a political gimmick.By painfultruth

Ok “Think”, let me break this down for you since you obviously don’t think about anything very clearly…over the past 8 years, President Bush has kept you SAFE. Who knows with Obama in there what will happen to us. We surely won’t have any military to protect us(because that is what they are there for) because these libs want to bring all the troops home so that they are safe. I’m as much of a supporter of the troops as the next guy, but that’s what military is for. You surely don’t hear on CBS, NBC, or ABC what this toop surge or patriot act has done to keep us safe. You never will. I’m sure that’s where you get your “news and facts”. Try listening to an unbiased reporter for an hour. Maybe then you will see the kind of progress President Bush has made for our country in Iraq. I will NOT at all feel safe with a president like Obama.By :Claps: For Leslie

THINK, will that 1% tax decrease make up for you losing your job because the corporations have to shave overhead costs to meet their profit margins? Will the “windfall profit taxes” on gas companies help you when it drives the price of gas over $6 a gallon and we are paying $7 for a gallon of milk all the while with the economy shrinking under the new taxes? Obama’s corporate tax hikes are going to lead to massive layoffs, and get this, less tax revenue. Tax revenue went up 20% since the Bush tax cuts went into place over ht Clinton administrations tax revenues, far beyond the rate of inflation. Igorance: You are certainly aptly named. As I said, go to the McCain web site and see for yourself what his policies are. Go to Obama’s web site and see what his policies are. I never claimed infinite economic wisdom, however, Alan Greenspan said, “America can’t afford McCain’s tax cuts.” The Chicago Sun-Times states, “The rich would pay more under Obama’s tax plan, the poor and the middle class would pay less. Under McCain’s tax plan, the rich would pay much less than they do now, the poor and middle class would pay less.” Now you will insert your rant about the “liberal media.” But I am glad you agree that Bush sucks.By Michael

Sorry i jumped off subject. This was about Obama and Mccain. Will i’m voting for Change. yeah you may say that Mccain is the same as bush( he is)Its all about the republicans and the rich. Politics is about the rich period. You bring in someone who has seen the struggles from the inside. Than you get a politican that well have a better since of careing for his fellow man. Look at Lincoln. Yes republican but he saw something wrong with this country and set out to make a Change. The republicans of now, see whats going on and say to themselve how will this effect me now? Not how will this effect my country. I know that most of you will not Vote for Obama because of his race. Thats fine But sometime you really have to look past that and see this man for how he is and what he stands for. people talk about the negative ad’s toward mccain. But who, who start the mud slinging? The republicans when Obama started taking flight. Just like the old days. When Martin luther king started getting people together to fight for change, he was stopped. Same with JFK. So keep the samething and stay comfortable. The Government will have won again. We’ll just keep working our factor jobs. Wait the government (reps) will have the jobs moved overseas. hmmmBy Jim

Ignorance, I don’t believe Co’s like Exxon, who make some 35 billion a quarter should receive tax breaks. I don’t believe Co’s who ship jobs overseas should be given tax breaks. I never suggested profits should be capped, but I am in favor of closing tax loopholes. The economic mess we’re in right now is due to the lack of regulation on the banking and lending industry. John McCain has championed deregulation throughout his career. It’s public record. Your impression of Obama as a socialist is wildly misguided too. Addtionally, If you don’t care that DHL is moving 8000 jobs out of this region, and you can’t grasp the severity this will have on the local and state economy, then you are truly ignorant. From Sen. John “Out-of-touch-with-Reality” McBush… QUESTION: Senator, finally, let’s talk about Spain. If you’re elected president, would you be willing to invite President Jose Luiz Rodriguez Zapatero to the White House to meet with you? MCCAIN: I would be willing meet, uh, with those leaders who our friends [sic] and want to work with us in a cooperative fashion, and by the way, President Calderon of Mexico is fighting a very very tough fight against the drug cartels. I’m glad we are now working in cooperation with the Mexican government on the Merida plan. I intend to move forward with relations, and invite as many of them as I can, those leaders, to the White House. QUESTION: Would that invitation be extended to the Zapatero government, to the president itself? MCCAIN: I don’t, you know, honestly I have to look at relations and the situations and the priorities, but I can assure you I will establish closer relations with our friends and I will stand up to those who want to do harm to the United States of America. QUESTION: So you have to wait and see if he’s willing to meet with you, or you’ll be able to do it in the White House? MCCAIN: Well again I don’t, all I can tell you is that I have a clear record of working with leaders in the hemisphere that are friends with us, and standing up to those who are not, and that’s judged on the basis of the importance of our relationship with Latin America, and the entire region. QUESTION: Okay… what about Europe I’m talking about the President of Spain? MCCAIN: What about me what? QUESTION: Okay… are you willing to meet with him if you are elected president? MCCAIN: I am willing to meet with any leader who is dedicated to the same principles and philosophy that we are for human rights, democracy and freedom, and I will stand up to those that do not.By emutt

Jim, can you please define for me what a “Windfall Profit” is? Who defines what “too much profit” is? Is this what King Obama is going to use his infinite wisdom for? Does Microsoft make “too much profit”, or are they exempt from that conversation because they are a “green” software company rather than an evil oil company? Do you drive a car or do you ride a bike? Do you really think taxing oil companies is going to lower gas prices? Please explain this to me because I have yet to hear a liberal who has a rational explanation for this. I have no problem with DHL moving jobs, this is a free country they can do whatever the hell they want. Maybe you should change your name to “Ignorance is Bliss” because you are obliviously living in a fantasy land where profits that are too high should be “capped” and no one ever loses their job. Jim, it’s no secret that the housing crisis is the result of liberal agendas to guarantee that all people have the “right” to buy a house. When gas and food prices went up (due to Democrats not letting us drill for oil and Democrats mandating that corn be used for fuel rather than food) decisions had to be made and people could no longer pay the mortgages they never should have had in the first place. Now, the taxpayers are again picking up the bill. Housing Welfare is what this amounts to. Soon there will be more people in the wagon than people pulling wagon, and the American voters will have one to blame but themselves when there is no longer any evil rich people to foot the bill for liberal agendas and individual irresponsibility. Keep voting for those Democrats, and have fun in the wagon. As for me I’m going to get back to work so I can pay for your house and food stamps. Pretty soon I’m going to be pulling this wagon myself…By Jim

It’s about time people are figuring it out. McCain said Monday,” The fundamentals of our Economy are strong” Tue, he opposed the AIG bailout, Wed, he supported the AIG bailout. Neither he or Caribou Barbie have a clue about what’s going on.By MIKE

I AM A DEMOCRAT, AND HAVE ALWAYS VOTED FOR THE DEMOCRATS, BUT MY VOTE GOES TO MCCAIN THIS ELECTION. I CAN’T MAKE MYSELF VOTE FOR OBAMA, A FORMER MUSLIM WITH A DAD AND STEP DAD THAT WERE BOTH “RADICAL” MUSLIMS. YOU KNOW THE PEOPLE WHO ATTACKED US ON 9-11. I JUST CAN’T BELIEVE HOW QUICKLY PEOPLE FORGET.By Ignorance is Bliss

Joanie, with your infinite economic wisdom could you please explain to me: 1. What exactly McCain proposes for the economy that “doesn’t work” 2. What “change” Obama is proposing that is going to do anything beneficial for our economy. I can tell by our response at 12:12 that you are an expert in economic issues and look forward to your intelligent response. Hopefully your response is more than just “Bush Sucks” but I’m not holding my breath.By fedup

There is not much difference between these two candidates…Its time to stand for real change and vote for something other than these two parties that have a choke hold on our country.By Harry

All you have to do is go to the McCain web site. It will tell you that McCain plans to continue Bush’s economic policies of cut cuts for big business. We know that doesn’t work, so why is Mcain going to continue something that doesn’t work? Because he is so rich himself he wants to continue to broaden the gap between rich and poor and continue to enrich himself, his wife, and his rich buddies? Or because he is totally clueless about the economy? Either way, he’s not the one of our country!By John F

Not sure if everyone knows that Mr. McBush thinks Spain is part of Latin America. He also thinks Spain’s president is a 3rd world dictator. Seems he forgets that Spain was one of the first countries to offer troops to serve in Afghanistan after 9/11 and also had troops in Iraq. Yeah Mr. McBush, great way to offend our allies.By hugh

Barry, I love the word “foist” as much as the next guy, but the “foisters” were a Republican Congress, led by none other than McCain’s economic advisor Gramm.By Barry

Let me answer that one The windstorm started out as a tropical storm, saying Ohio got pasted by a hurricane might be an exaggeration, but it was the remnants of our good buddy Ike that pasted us. Comparing a windstorm to a politician is unfair to the windstorm. Politicians are full of hot air, but they can do way more damage. Just ask the “bush lied, people died” crowd. Just look at how liberal policies foisted upon economic institutions before bush was elected are coming home to roost. I am pretty sure, when all is said or done the damage done by politicians is far greater then any hurricaneBy NOMOREREPUBS

ACC22 - The Tropical Storm you write about was actually winds with the same strength as a tropical storm. A windstorm and tropical storm are only similar in that the wind force is the same. Regardless, are you suggesting that Obama and the windstorm are somehow related?By Barry

another election where no matter who wins we all lose. the question is “who is going to do the most damage?” and then vote for the other guy. it is pretty bad when I get so depressed about it I can’t complain about taxes. maybe we will get lucky and a giant space rock will hit us or something.By Barry

when you go to vote this year make sure you leave plenty of time. the state is trying to make things as hard as they can on the poll workers and there should be record turnouts. if you can vote early at the board of elections or vote absentee I would recomend that.By ACC22
