Casino issue certified for ballot

It’s official.

Ohio voters will vote Nov. 4 on a proposed constitutional amendment to permit construction of a $600 million resort gambling casino in Clinton County near Wilmington.

Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner announced on Thursday, Sept. 25, that backers of the casino submitted enough valid signatures from registered voters to qualify for the ballot.

Her office said the petitions contained 480,003 valid signatures, more than the required 402,275 valid signatures needed statewide to qualify for the ballot. The required 402,275 equals 10 percent of the ballots cast in the 2006 gubernatorial election.

Also, backers submitted signatures equaling at least 5 percent of the ballots cast for governor in 2006 in 44 counties, another requirement.

The backers met that threshold in 77 counties.

Brunner also denied a protest that had been filed against the issue by Andrew D. Bowers, based on the recommendation of hearing examiner Karl Schneider.

I thought Ohio was in the business of legislating common sense, hence the smoking ban! Why would those same Ohioans vote this in? It’s just trading one vice for another.

I remember a radio ad on WLW saying 5,000 jobs will be provided in Wilmington if the Casino is built. Is that after construction is complete? I add my skepticism to the remarks of Dan Renfro, but, let the voters decide. Make note of the politicians mouthing the “benefits” of this Casino. Watch as funds collected get diverted to pork, or “vanish”. This infusion of cash into an economically depressed area must be watched carefully and accounted for. Don’t condemn me for my cynicissm. “The talent of acute observation is always called cynicissm by those who don’t possess it”. Be careful what you ask for, and when you get it, watch it very closely. Wilmington is in for the ride of its’ life. Hope it survives.

I vote no on this issue. There is a certain percentage of Ohioans that leave the state to gamble. You could say Ohio is losing money when they go. But a casino is southern Ohio will inspire countless more to gamble. I sold computer systems to a gambling boat in St. Louis several years ago. When we arrived at 7:30 in the morning to demonstrate our wares, the casino parking lot was absolutely full! That was a depressing and sad sight that I hope never comes to Ohio!

Interesting loophole for the casino corporation: it creates a monopoly by setting up a tax loop hole should we ever allow any other corporation (Native American, for instance) to have a casino. What about the one that the Native Americans wanted in Botkins a few years ago?

People are actually against a major coporate business moving into the state and merely centralize in Ohio activity that is already going on? It would be sheer stupidity to vote against this. I don’t even gamble, and I am 100% behind something that will pump MILLIONS of dollars into Ohio’s economy. This will not make good honest people into degenerate gamblers, degenerate gamblers are going to gamble no matter where it is.

The fact is people are going to gamble and if they can’t do it here, then they will go out of state to do it. We might as well at least keep that money in our own state. This would also be a boost to Wilmington who is going to lose a lot of jobs with DHL pulling out.

I feel this way, if you are so opposed to gambling, then get rid of the lottery, isn’t that a form of gambling? The casino can’t do anymore harm then scratch off’s, etc.

For many years opponents of Casino’s in Ohio have used lame duck excuses and falsehoods to try to dictate how we use our entertainment money. Mt wife and I have traveled to Biloxi and Tunica Mississippi, Detroit Michigan, Winsor Canada, Lawrenceburg, Rising Sun and Elizabeth Indiana and other Casino’s in WV and New York as well as Vegas. We don’t abuse our finances, don’t get or use welfare monies, and enjoy the trips. We normally get free rooms and food while there. We don’t drink or smoke and the casino’s are our vice. So what laws or morality are we breaking when we go outside Ohio to play? We would prefer to stay closer to home and not pay so much in gas and other expenses associated with out trips. The proposed Casino would bring thousands of jobs to a community needing employment. Wilmington is close enough to benefit from the new jobs, God knows they are going to suffer when the hub moves out. Get smart Ohio, allow Ohio casino money to stay in Ohio.

I for one am against the issue and will definitely vote NO. I’ve seen the ads and I’ve heard all the promises. They are without merit, and there are plenty of examples around the country to prove it. Casinos only benefit the owners and the greedy developers.

Dan Renfro, you have no idea what you are talking about. I bet you were never in Laweranceburg before the casino’s. The shacks were there before the casino, now just less of them. New roads, new businesses, and many more improvements.

A Casino is a great idea for Ohio. Thousands of Ohioans go to other states and spend millions gambling. The hysterical arguments people have against the casinos are just emotional falsities. Gambling will provide Ohioans with employment, entertainment and taxes.

Its sad in this day and age people still associate casino’s of old with todays casino’s. Most of the people who do this have never stepped foot in a casino, much less Las Vegas. Just keep bad mouthing casinos on your way to bingo and playing your lotto numbers, while Casino parking lots in detroit and Indiana are full of ohio cars and buses.

Moose,if you think only unemployed people frequent casinos, you need to wake up. Stupid people? It seems like your a right wingers that is interested in legislating rules, laws and morality for everyone. Organized Crime? Oh man you have been watching too many movies, or you know nothing about casinos, or your just lying. Organized crime left the casinos in Vegas in the 70’s. Do you really think organized crime is runnibg the casinos in Indiana? LOL. Wilmington and it’s residents will probably be begging for a casino especially after what has happened to DHL. Let others think for themselves. if they are old enoug hand adults, they should be able to make the decision themselves if they want to go to a casino, Nobody is going to drag you into the casino Moose and make you go. Why should you care if others go if it generates revenue for Ohio, instead of all that money go to neighboring states? Oh and just FYI, I have held a job since was a teenager and graduated from an Ohio college. I have visited the casinos in Indiana maybe dozen times since they opened, I haven’t went to one in the last 5 years because I choose not to. But I don’t try to tell others that they shouldn’t. that is there buisness. The good people of Wilmington sure could use the Casino

We need casino so all of the unemployed Ohioians have something to spend there money on besides beer and cigarettes. The lottery and casinos are taxes on stupid people. They pay it and love it. NOBODY wins at casinos except organized crime. It will bring more jobs-more police and drug & alcohol coulselors, criminal justice system workers, etc. Come on Ohio, we don’t need this blight. Defeat this issue.

Let’s not get too excited. Remember the lottory money, millions on millions went to the schools. Then the same political machine that helped push the lottory through took all the previous earmarked funds for schools and used them for other projescts. Yes they devered tax money and all other funds equal to the lotto money giving the school SQUAT as a net increase. THis left the schools in actually worst shape than before. Look at most of the states schools and teachers pay checks (they may make more as dealers ???) Look at Lawrenceberg In. The only huge inprovemnts are the roads leading to the casino. Even the houses directly accross the street are little more than shacks. The Downtown just minutes from there is still old, dried up and after all these years has not become the job mecca the city folk had been duped into believing. Additionally look at the same school standing that is same same same.Just like MOST of our schools after many years of lottory… LOOK WE HAVE THE INTERNET. We Can Drive an hour to see. Don’t believe the hype, GET THE FACTS on your own. Dan Renfro VOTE NA, NA, NA NO!

This could be a good thing in a way . Our schools in Ohio could use the money . Our Dayton mayor has ruined our schools and increased our deficit by doing so . Tax payers should not have to pay for our political screw ups . This will bring more jobs to Ohio. I do not agree with the gambling but i dont have to go now do i . And i am not anyone to pass judgement on others who wish to participate in such activities . I will vote yes this November , because it will do more good then harm for the people of Ohio . I just majority of us think so too .
