Mary, I too have followed politics for years and have not missed an election in 30 years. I have never had a problem deciding who to vote for in the past. I am not a person who votes for a party, but rather the person. I think it is a horrible shame that we are living during a time of such an historical election and the most you can find on either opponent is a bunch of sticks and stones. Can you believe this is the stuff that will probably be printed in the history books? I find it appalling. I have asked my original question on so many message boards for months now, and the only true answers I have gotten come today from you and Tim. Not one person has been able to try to sell a candidate to me without using all of the negative attacks on the opponent. I have already heard, more than I care to admit, every negative thing that can be said about Obama and McCain. One would think that since I am a very last minute undecided voter in such a close race that people, with all of their passion, would be knocking theirselves out trying to pitch to me…at least thats what I would be doing. Only Tim has been able to offer me a sound sales pitch. I truly do understand where you are coming from when you suggested I go for an independent. I do wish that the independents would get more platform time, then maybe one of them would stand half a chance of making it to the Whitehouse. Unfortunatly, because I know we do not live in a time yet where I think my voting for an independent would be a message anyone would hear, I feel I should try to figure out which of these two main candidates is the lesser of two evils. Guess I will have to do that on my own, since not to many people know how to share their opinion of their candidate in a positive light without smearing the other.

Politicalconfusion, thank you for the “intelligent” compliment even though I accidentally butchered the spelling of democracy. In case you could not tell, I was and still am also politically confused. I have followed politics year round for years and years and have never been so politically confused. I still might vote independent even though I usually vote for one of the two major parties for presidential. From my pespective, it is not a wasted vote to vote for a candidate who has been more intellectually honest with the public about problems with the two party system. That is one way voters can help put pressure on the system to change. As USA Today points out in a front page article today, some “experts” imply Obama’s apparent advantage is not simply due to his positive draw, but due also to the republican negatives. I think we need to have more open political discussions with independent candidates to enhance the dialogue for our democracy. I will likely vote split tickets for local, state and federal elections with republicans, democrats and independents getting my vote.

Voting for an independent sounds like a good idea on the surface, but in actuality, it would just be a wasted vote because none of the independents will ever make it into office and I want my vote to count. To Tim, thankyou for your wonderful response. I think you are the very first person in all of these months that could actually give factual reasons why they’re candidate is the one to vote for without smearing the opponent. Your answer was refreshing and intelligent. Would anyone else out there like to explain to me why I should vote for their candidate without smearing the opponent? To Palin ain’t running for prez, Palin is in effect running for President just the same as Biden is. If something were to happen to either of the two men running for president should they be elected, they would have to step in and fill that role. This seems pretty likely in the event of a McCain presidency. people should be concerned. She does not have an understanding of the world political scene. McCain’s camp is the one who raised the question of experience and she just doesn’t have it. a small town mayor is a lot different than president. She hasn’t been governor long enough to gain experience there. She runs on the guise of reform, but already we have seen her under two investigations for ethics violations, and charges of others. She is a perfect fit to the republican party, as she fires anyone who disagrees with her narrow views. As for Biden the lier…what do you have other than a speech that he had given many times before but forgot once to credit it to its author. Joe Biden is a good honest family man. This upsets Republicans anytime someone who is the epitome of family values runs on the other side while their candidates struggle with their image.

politicalconfusion… Obama will give tax cuts to the middle class while rolling back the tax rate on the wealthy to the rates they were under the Clinton administration. Obama wants to work to lower the premiums on health insurance to those who have coverage, and provide an affordable alternative to those who do not. He wants to reform the way insurance companies can deny someone coverage for things like preexisting conditions. Obama wants to end the costly war in Iraq and put focus on finding Osama Bin Laden and destroying the reemerging Taliban in Afghanistan. Obama wants to give tax breaks to companies who create jobs here in America instead of those who ship jobs overseas. Obama wants to work toward energy independence by investing in alternative sources like wind and solar power. politicalconfusion, another option you might want to consider is voting for independents such as Nader or Barr. That vote would at least help send another message to the two major parties that a lot of us think the system is broken and a lot of us are disenchanted with what the two major parties offer and do. The two major parties should also work to include such independent candidates in the debates and other forums for the good of the country and to provide ideas and information to the voters. We are not a real demmcocracy when the ideas and concerns of independent candidates are shut out of the discussion for the most part by the media during the entire campaign.

Job loss and the cost of medical care mixed with the global price of oil have made for a bad situation for a lot of people. When you buy a $150,000 home and you make $100k a year, this is not outside your means. but if you then get laid off and forced to take a job paying $10/hr less with the skyrocketing the costs of consumer goods, and the decline of property values, how could you keep from being foreclosed upon. open your eyes to the truth and you’ll see the real problem.

We have given McCain chance after chance to differentiate himself from the Bush administration and he has focused on bashing Barack Obama instead. I have not heard any leadership toward unity from his campaign, only divisive talk like that which feared me into voting for Bush in the last election. This past eight years have been horrible and if McCain was going to be different, you would think he would start with the way he runs his campaign.

do you know major corperations are taxed over 50 percent? why would you want to honestly stay in a country where you get taxed for providing jobs and a product for your country, where you can go somewhere else, play lower wages, and say for instance in Ireland get taxed 11%? Makes sense to me? Bush wanted to give those companies tax breaks to try to keep them in our country and keep our employment rate up and keep the american economy going. This was not ignorance it was the best thing to do.

If the people that can afford to pay the taxes (pay) a little more, that will help the ones that do not pay as much pay their mortgages, keep their houses and everyone would be better—they still will have their $200,000 income and guess what they may earn a little bit more when the middle-class person start spending more money on the business-its a win-win situation—but if you make $200,000 or more naturally you don’t want to help anyone else make it because nine times out of ten you got to that bracket being like Palin and getting (lots of Per Diem) back from the government. If all the money that was used for the fake war-was used in the US, we all would be moving toward a higher tax bracket-not just the ones that want to keep things (hush hush).

divorces do happen and are looked down upon, but they are a fact of life. For Barack I am for limited govt. and I don’t believe the government has to act like our fathers and give us handouts and further more punish us for being successful. your a grown a*s person why can’t you create your own savings? why does my dollar have to support you? therefore why does someone else’s hard earned dollar have to go towards supporting me. there is such a thing as a 401K! put your dollar torwards that instead of buying that beer or going out to eat. I don’t want to go through a mediator to get to the doctor. why if i have the flu, do i have to wait 3 weeks to get into the doctor. i want to call myself and set up my own appointment. i want to chose my plan and what i can and can not recieve. i feel this is a form of well fare and is not needed in this country. this is socialistic views. i do know people come upon hard times and do need help, yet when i was watching tv and saw a woman complaining (this was in NC) that they were tearing down her home for high rises and it bothered her, i was upset too, but then they pointed out it was government housing (projects) and she had been living there for 21 years! i feel people, majority of the time, abuse the system, and it sickens me that my dollar that i work hard for is being taken away to support causes like that it. i ask why? why do you want your money going torwards circumstances like that? if i’m being forced to give my money away, let me chose the cause to donate it too. these are my reasons, and no i do not make more than $250,000 a year, i am NO WHERE near that, i just have my beliefs, political and religous, and i feel that the republican party stands closest to that.

BJ, job loses happen no matter who is in office and i’m sorry that had happened. yet at the same time a person can not make promises they can not keep. where is the smarts in raising taxes during a recesssion and on the verge of a depression. everyone wants to blame bush yet the whole world is struggling, not just the US. what will happen if you raise taxes on companies on companies who make more than $200,000 dollars a year and make them provide healthcare to all employees. Numerous businesses no matter how small they are net proffit that ammount. And Obama’s definition of a small business is under 7 employees. Companies, to stay a float, will be forced to cut jobs in turn and things will not be good. Look into these things. If he follows through with this promise, which i believe there will be no way so a lot of people will be broken hearted, you will see the unemployment rate dramatically increase! this could lead us into a direct and long turn depression. just food for thought

My wife, kids, and I saw Joe Biden Friday in Kettering and we just got back from the Obama rally at the State House. Wonderfully uplifting and hopeful! Both men talked about reuniting the country, a theme you won’t hear at a McCain/Palin event. I was independent until now, but after hearing them, seeing them interact with their families, hearing what their country means to them, the choice is now clear to me. My wife and I both lost a job under Bush and we cannot afford to go through that again. We have a stack of medical bills and are still arguing with insurance about claims they do not want to cover. I haven’t heard McCain say anything about medical insurance except he wants to privatize it. That is not going to help our family or our country. I say lets wake up Wednesday to an Obama victory!

Thumbing though yesterdays mail I found another of the daily barrage of fliers warning me of how disastrous an Obama presidency would be. I’ve stated many things about Obama which are all fact and reason why I am not voting for him. If Obama is elected watch the uneployment rate rise and his little tax cut keep lowering numbers wise. Steve Forbes was just on TV and stated that by 2010 this tax cut will be for any family making below the $40,000 range. The question that has been raised by some media is whether that the Joe the plumber was a gimmick by the democratic campaign that backfired. Do you really believe that a presidential canidate would be allowed to walk down an open street up to people that he has no record on and no idea if they are armed or not with TV cameras around him? The scene seemed to be set up and somewhat scripted and it completely backfired. Then the democratic media begins to investigate the mans background, and that is very low. I’ve actually admired McCain over the years and there are things about the Republican platform that I agree. But, I just can’t get past the manner in which he has conducted his campaign. The only duty the VP has in the Senate is to break tie votes. The VP isn’t in charge of the Senate, they don’t get into policy discussions, they don’t sit on committees, etc. Palin should know this stuff. Ayers would have gotten a life sentence if he had been convicted a fact he celebrated after the trial with his famous Guilty as sin free as a bird statements. The robocalls from the McCain/Palin campaign are hate filled lies. But, that is atypical republican strategy. Use hate and lies. Wake: Actually she did know the duties and she stated to run congress which in turn she does. If the house is at a lock she is the decessive vote! So her answer was correct. Cat, you’re once again undervaluing Obama’s EDUCATION and INTELLECT. You’re ignoring Obama’s years of investment in his education, not to mention his years (1997-2004) in the Illinois State Senate. Chicago is more typical of America at large, then Alaska. It doesn’t make Chicago better, just more representative. Palin couldn’t get accepted into ANY LAW SCHOOL in the country, let alone the University of Chicago, where Obama has been teaching Constitutional Law for the past ten years. (BTW, Truman attended the Kansas City Law school, although he didn’t graduate. He did though, have intellect) Palin went to five different colleges in six years. Does that tell you anything? Have you heard her interviews? She can’t articulate even the most basic understanding of domestic and international issues. Really Cat, she’s not qualified. She doesn’t have the bandwidth! We just experienced an over-hyped, outrageous primary election season that has left me wondering where the heads of our citizens are hiding - must be someplace where the sun doesn’t shine very often. At one time in my life I was a determined, dedicated and ever-loyal Democrat. Then something happened - Lyndon Baines Johnson - that turned my life around and gave me pause for the veracity of a party that lives and feeds off the most unfortunate among us. Some of them are in their positions in life by their own choosing, others by outside circumstance. But always, always there was a door open to them to reach for new heights, achieve new goals, change their lives for the better. Similarly, there have always been the bottom feeders, doing what they could to take advantage of those who had not or have not seen better days, nor realized that they, in fact, were the masters of their own destiny - these unfortunates had come to believe that they were dependent on people in Washington who would look out for and take care of them. They waited and still wait for all those promised freebies. Most people don’t reflect upon the fact that the Democrats ruled Washington for over 40 years; it wasn’t until 1994, when the so-called Gingrich Revolution changed this - but only for a while. These same people do not realize that it was the Democrats who created the failed policies of the entitlement programs that are now falling apart before our eyes. But in the past few months I have listened with grow-ing horror to the railings of the left, calling for yet more giveaways, more promises of a proverbial ‘free lunch.’ What sums up my feelings, why I am appalled by those in political power is contained within a quote by basketball legend and talk show host, Charles Barkley: ‘Poor people have been voting for Democrats for the last fifty years, and they are still poor!’ Now, with our elections, come yet more new promises of ‘change:’ ‘change we can believe in’, ‘hope for the future.’ But if you really, I mean REALLY listen to what the new messiah is asking for, it is not ‘change of policy’ or ‘change for the better’ - this is a warning that he wants our change. And the change you will get will not be the change you expected or wanted. I leave you my predictions of what will happen if the junior Senator from Illinois becomes President - especially if the House and Senate are veto-proof Democrats: 1) Strict gun laws, though he promised he would not. 2) ‘In God We Trust’ will be removed from all currency. 3) He will renege on his pledge to Israel and leave them to the wolves of Islam. 4) Hillary Clinton will be named to the Supreme Court. 5) Tax rates will surge to the highest levels in 30 years. 6) Capital gains tax will be at least double current levels. 7) Retired Army General, Wesley Clark, will be named Secretary of Defense. 8) Your borders will be open to all comers - especially from the Middle East and South America. 9) Amnesty will be granted to all illegals in the U.S. regardless of status or even gang membership. 10) Our presence in Iraq will come to an abrupt end - with tragic results for their citizens and devastating consequences to our military. My predictions will not sit well with some people - the best we can hope for is that I am wrong.

Reality: She sold her plane, actually the state of Alaska’s plane, in which the tax payers pay for. Imagine the up keep and the cost monthly that that is to the citizens of that state. She is actually saving her state money and it is stated that the family does fly on the budget as well. It’s not like her family is flying around for a joy ride, they are campaigning for a cause. It is perfectly legal and not currupt. Learn the facts first before you state a comment and call someone crooked or a liar because of an issue that is acceptable and was actually the right thing.

Like mentioned by someone before does a student automatically become better or is smarter because he/she attended,say, Alter instead of Dunbar??? NO! Did you know Truman is the only president after 1897 to not obtain a degree!?!?!? And he was the president of the freeworld for 8 years!!! I,for one, have lived in Alaska and it is a great state and it may have only 700,000 people yet she did run that state and did a great job. She had over an 80% approval rating. Look at Chicago where Obama is from and represent and look at the crime that occurs there. He has no influence or power in his hometown, how do you expect him to control a country or for the better part having countries who despise us breathing down our necks with weapons of mass destruction? I have no faith in him at all! Yes Sara Palin was a PTA member, then city council member, then mayor and went onto to become governer, and remember she is running for VP not president. How does Obama go from community organizer to senate and then run for PRESIDENCY in 10 years??? It does not happen nor does it make sense with out political influence and scandal, which we all know he has been involved with, if you don’t believe me look up his ties with Resco, Ayers, ACORN, Frank Wallace, Rev. Wright and so on. Even a committe he was a chairman on donated over a million dollars to one of Bill Ayers foundations! It is absurd to believe there is no crooked ties going on behind the scenes. This is what scares me. Yes he may be a decent man with good intention, but we do not know anything about him and he is willing not to make anything known…

We have gotten at least 10-12 robocalls from Republicans in the past week. One was from Joe the Dumber. The Obama campaign has been smart, well organized, and efficient. Even the negaitve ads have not included the vicious personal attacks that characterize the McCain/Palin ticket. Obama runs his campaign like he will run the country, with intelligence and care. He will face so many challenges, but his campaign is evidence that he will handle them effectively. Cat, Obama voted present in only 3% of total votes. What is McCain’s record of voting present? Or even not being there to vote present?

The last two “robocalls” I got were from the Obama campaign. There were no hate filled overtones or false accusations leveled at McCain or Palin. They were basically, “get out and vote for Obama”. The last two McCain robocalls were full of hate and lies. Don’t you see the difference? The McCain campaign resorts to hate filled lies. I do not want hate filled liars in the white house. We already had that with Bush/Cheney. And, what a failure that has been!

CAT, Palin ran a state,(for less then two years), that has less then 700,000 people, is off the beaten path culturally, and has a budget surplus because of oil. You or I could run that state. You’re forgetting two important ingredients. Intellect, and Education. Palin couldn’t even get into the University of Chicago, while Obama has been teaching law there for over ten years. Have you listened to Palin try to answer the simplest of questions? She’s clueless and doesn’t grasp complex issues. It’s a national disgrace that Palin was put on this ticket. Even McCain’s own advisors are calling her a “wack job” and a “diva”.

Obama is a hypocrite. he calls for change yet wants to raise taxes in the time of a recession. even the governor of new mexico stated that the tax cut is for anyone under the $120,000 range. so obama changes his mind in less than a year from 1 million dollars as rich, to 500,000, to 300,000, to 250,000 to 200,000 to 150,00 now one of his biggest supporters who has a direct insight, is stating $120,000. who do you believe? Obama even voted to raise taxes on families who made under $42,000! who can you believe now??? Hell even is aunt has been living in the US illegally for 5 years now! Do you really want that as our president? He has not answered questions, he is always in hiding, and he won’t reveal who the real him is! These are things that we do need to know! Do you actually believe other nations will respect him? What military back ground has he had and how many times has he actually taken a strong stand for something? The robocall I got was from Tom Ridge. Some may remember him as Mr. plastic sheets and duct tape to protect against bioterrorism. (he must have worked for 3M.) Younger people probably don’t remember him. And, agree, McCain will probably secure the vote at assisted living facilities.
