Ohio ACLU calls on Strickland to act in “Joe the Plumber” case
The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio Friday, Nov. 14, called on Gov. Ted Strickland and other state officials to enact regulations protecting private information kept on state data bases in the wake of the “Joe the Plumber” controversy.
(See earlier blog post on State Rep. Shannon Jones’ proposed legislation).
“Gov. Strickland must not delay in taking immediate action to guarantee there will be no further violation of Ohioans’ privacy,” ACLU of Ohio executive director Cheryl Link said in a press release. “He must mandate that every department head in the state have a privacy protection plan that they implement and are accountable for.”
State Rep. Shannon Jones, R-Springboro, is preparing legislation to address the issue and it should be ready for introduction week after next, Jones said Friday.
The ACLU first pressed for action after it was revealed that the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services conducted a search on Samuel Joseph - “Joe the Plumber” - Wurzelbacher, the ACLU press release said.

If we want to have a grown up conversation about making our country better for small business, let’s do it. Joe the Plumber is a doofus. The ACLU is silly sometimes but does good things, and here, I actually think it’s being silly. I like having public records out in the open.By y

Funny, Joanie - they already have been! Idiot Bill O’Reilly was on his show condemning the ACLU for not standing up for Joe the Plumber AFTER they sent a letter on Joe’s behalf. Apparently they only pay attention to the negative ACLU stories….By TRS

Do I support the right to privacy - yes. Do I support the ACLU - absolutely not. Joanie - See Philman’s comments. I couldn’t have said it better. As per your reference to amendments to the Consitution, they require 3/4 of state legislatures to approve them, which mean they are thoroughly debated. This process is outlined by the constitution itself. The living, breathing constitution is the one where judges alter it at their whim. Aside from what Philman mentioned, the ACLU and the secular left have sought to alter the historical context of the founding father’s belief that we were granted our rights by God and that we need a moral compass of something other than ourselves for a society to function well. The ACLU desire that anyone be able to look at all the porn they want; yet, heaven forbid have a manger seen on display in a public park. Thats how wacked out the ACLU has turned common sense around.By Philman

Yes, I do believe in “that living, breathing document that can be altered.” So did the founding fathers, which why thet altered it themselves with the first ten amendments and why they created a process by which the Constitution may be altered. And yes, compared to you, I am a liberal. And I’m proud of it when I see how the conservatives have abused my country and its Constitution. You are boring in the extreme.By Jim

Joanie - you don’t believe in any constitution which the founding fathers were familiar with. You believe in that living, breathing document that can be altered by society at the whim of a lawyers who are more impressed with their own knowledge that that of the writers of the constitution. Supporting the ACLU only shows your liberal - it certainly doesn’t reflect any support the the constitution.By Joanie

Still out here Joanie and still condemning. No one needs the ACLU chiming in but hey do so to present an air of only being advocates for 1st amendment rights. With their convaluted legal rationale they have confused free speech rights under the guise of claiming to protect them. Of all groups in this nationm they have done the greatest harm in the last 3 decades. They are the reason Shakesphere said “shoot the lawyers”.By Joanie
