“Joe the Plumber” becomes “Joe the Pitchman”
“Joe the Plumber” has become “Joe the Pitchman.”
Samuel Joseph - “Joe the Plumber” - Wurzelbacher of suburban Toledo became a major figure in the Ohio presidential campaign when he questioned Democrat Barack Obama’s tax plan and endorsed Republican John McCain.
Now he’s appearing in a Toledo company’s online video alerting people to the need to convert analog TVs to digital. To see Joe in action, click here.
Here’s an Associated Press story on Joe’s new gig with VelocityStore.com:
TOLEDO, OH- Northwest Ohio’s “Joe the Plumber” is appearing in a Toledo company’s online video reminding people to convert analog TVs to digital.
Samuel J. Wurzelbacher also tells viewers of the VelocityStore.com ad that they can apply for a federal government coupon for $40 off the cost of a converter box.
The plumber who became a supporting player in the presidential campaign says in the video that it isn’t about politics but about “doing the right thing.”
Elsewhere on its site, VelocityStore.com has five converter box models for sale, ranging in price from $40 up to $81.88.
Company president Stephen Holland says Wurzelbacher is being compensated for his celebrity sponsorship, though he doesn’t say how much the Web retailer is paying.

Sarah Palin was an extreme shock and threat for the democrats. If she was a democrat they would have loved her. She fits the image the democrats portray that they are fighting for. As soon as she was announced they immediately began to discredit her. They had to lie and smear quickly and they did a good job of it. No one yelled “kill him” at a rally. Secret Service said it did not happen and they listened to the recordings and said it was not there. Yet the lie continues and will continue. The democrats in power are VERY scared of Palin and will continue to smear her for fear of 2010 and 2012. The democrats in power will smear any discredit anyone from here on in to gurantee there control. Don’t be fooled they don’t respect the peons. They just need the votes and the money. Listen to Barney Frank you can hear and see how much he disrepects the populace. How about Harry Reid that calls us “smelly” and rewrites history claiming we want big government and that is what we are about. Pelosi? Yeah she really cares! She is a power hungry rich elitist that has no respect for the American population. These people think we are idiots that cannot think for ourselves. Do you realize that while they are keeping us off focus they are fighting for amnesty for all illegal aliens and fighting to increase visas to import more foreign workers. They say we don’t have the citizens to fill the jobs even in engineering and IT. They also say we are not educated enough. Are you really believing this baloney?By Rob

TRS - I don’t know that I’ve seen Dr. Rice’s credentials or intelligence questioned. I have seen legitimate points about policy disagreements between the Secretary of State and publications which lean left. Her “transformational diplomacy” initiatives have been challenging - particularly in Gaza. I mean, what do you do if thugs win the free and open elections you’ve been saying will save the day?She has been shown to have been wrong on her Iraq assumptions. But there isn’t the same visceral response to her presence on the national stage because she’s clearly up to the tasks of the job. She is an accomplished authority based on decades of study, work, and experience. The differences between Condoleeza Rice and Sarah Palin could not be more stark. It’s not lack of Ivy league credentials that bother me about Gocernor Palin - the Univesity of Denver isn’t necessarily more prestigious than the University of Idaho. No, what really bothers me (at least) to no end about Governor Palin and Mr. Wurzelbacher is the dishonesty in their personal narratives. You can read through this string and see Mr. Wurzelbacher described as “an average guy” who “just asked a question”. Look, Joe went and picked a fight based on a disingenuine premise. He made up a number for revenue (or was it profit) for a company he had no way to purchase, and couldn’t provide adequate qualifying data (Well Joe, do you have $250,000 in billings or is that what you take home after expense? Because if you personally don’t clear $250K - your taxes don’t go up. It was at that point Joe developed an aggressive posture - beacuse he didn’t know, he just wanted to try and trip up the Senator). Fast forward to the McCain campaign commenting on Joe’s “wisdom”, and Gov. Palin refering to him as “an American hero”. You can’t blame those of us who hear those comments and have our BS meter peg in the red. Don’t spit on me and tell me it’s raining. If he’s what the Senator considers “wise” -what on earth does unwise look like? Somebody who is considering buying a company at what he thinks is over EIGHT TIMES his current salary - and does not know if it’s turning a profit or losing money or what it is clearing in cash flow - that’s not what an unbiased observer would consider “wise”. Heroic? A tax cheat? A man who abuses women? A guy who doesn’t pay his bills? No - that is not heroic. John McCain - a POW and veteran = heroic. Joe is going along with a narrative about himself that is not true. Joe letting you get an uninformed and incorrect impression of him = fraud. Right off the bat the Governor insisted she was the heroine who cancelled the “bridge to nowhere”. Until the record showed not only did she not kill the project, she activeley lobbied for the money. You want to jump on President-elect Obama along with Governor Plain about his “share the wealth” comment? Guees who authored this quote: “What we do different in Alaska, in our state budget, we share the wealth”? That would be the good Governor herself, describing how petroleum taxation gets, what’s that word - oh yeah, “redistributed” to the state’s citizens. The difference is believability based on the record. When asked about her experience with discrimination she points to her husband and says “Oh yeah, he gets that all the time”, since as everybody knows, based on his 100% caucasian appearance, Mr. Palin is one-eighth Yu’pik eskimo. Contrast that to Dr. Rice, who actually had a friend who was killed in the Alabama church bombings in the 60’s. When she was a child. She actually had to use segregated water fountains and was asked in department store to use a closet instead of a dressing room - just because of the color of her skin. So when Dr. Rice wanted to discontinue race influenced hiring at Stanford and go to a race-nuetral policy, she speaks from unimpeachable moral authority. An awful lot of the time when Governor Plain speaks, she is uninformed and disingenuine. It has NOTHING to do with her gender, party affiliation, or other beliefs. It has to do with the fact that she is uninformed, demonstrably duplicitous, and lacks credibility. Condelezza Rice is a Republican who I respect, disagree with on occassion, and would consider voting for based on her credentials. Governor Palin is a Republican who at the present time I do not respect, have serious disagreement with, and can’t envision a scenario where I would vote for her based on her lack of credential and credibility. By the way, that does not mean I don’t respect the office of the Governor of Alaska. I do, as in military parlance “we salute the rank, not the man” It has nothing to with gender. It has everything to do with character.By TRS

Obviously people believe what they want to about Gov Palin. The McCain campaign criticism came from anonomous sources; yet, the people who actually worked with her said those incidents never happened as reported in the press. Many believe that this was an attempt by the Rockefeller wing of the party to try and discredit her and the conservative wing of the party. Some may have been trying to cover their tail. As for the Afganistan comment, did Obama saying their were 57 states or that Iran, N Korea and Syria were just small countries of no threat give pause as well? You see - for Obama to slip up was OK but for Palin, well then she’s labeled as ignorant. Rob - your better than that comment about “kill him”. There are no recordings of such a chant and only hearsay that it was said to begin with. Assuming some nutcase did in fact say that, they exist on both sides and certainly are not representative. For example, when Tony Snow died, the Daily Kos had some left wing loons saying it was a good thing. Neither is right or representative of sane thinking. I’ve been trying to figure out why there seems to be this visceral reaction of Palin. Contrary to popular myth which the Dems tried to create, those that have worked with her say she is intelligent and rising to the level of governor of a state is no easy task. In part I believe its because she doesn’t fit the mold of what some believe a “professional woman” should look like. She’s not ivy league educated, has a large family, obviously lives a different lifestyle in Alaska, is pro life, etc - the list goes on. I also believe that had a man made some of the comments she did most would have brushed that off as hard campaigning but it wasn’t OK for Gov Palin. It seems that some of those tolerant progressive folks on the left have their own stereotypes to overcome. For some its just partisanship. There is no more an accomplished or intelligent woman that Condi Rice; yet, when you see the posts from some, they talk about her just like they talk about Palin.By Rob

Don’t forget all the nasty things the McCain campaign staff said about the Governor. Aside from referring to her as a diva, some of the staff let out nuggets like she didn’t know what countries were in NAFTA. Kind of important for the VP to know, don’t you think? Look, it’s not “nasty” to point out that she couldn’t name a single newspaper she had read, she thinks Afghanistan is a “neighboring country”, couldn’t name a single controversial Supreme Court decision besides Roe vs. Wade, and couldn’t decribe the constitutional responsibilities of the Vice President. None of that is name calling or bashing. It is a calm, dulcet toned presentation of some facts which might give a serious voter pause when considering her qualifications for elected federal office. In actual fact, Patty, the Governor did a pretty good job “bashing” - the whole “pallin’ around with terrorists” smear - and even went so far as to get her minion chanting “kill him” in reference to Senator Obama at one of her rallies.By Patty

Gov Palin did not insult people around here. From the moment she was introduced the media and the bloggers began to bash her, destroy her, and twist every little thing she said. But it’s okay for Obama to say we are bitter and cling to our guns and religion. The nasty things said of Saran and her family were absurd and Obama never said anything to his peasants to stop it. This behavior that is promoted is absolutely horrible!By Sassy

Dear President Elect Obama, There is a blogger on the DDN who does not appear to be inspired by your message of hope and change. He says he does not care. Maybe you can take some of your time to show some love and encourage him to show some good manners while blogging. Hoping to hear from you very soon because if anything, our country does not need any more hateful words, name calling, and bad manners. Good luck on the 20th of January. Yours truly, Grandma EthelBy prq

For prq, I strongly object to your very sexism remarks regarding Gov. Sarah Palin. Your reference to her body parts and Caribou Barbie is so offensive that you reflect poorly on the different kind of change that the Obama Administration is supposed to bring to this country. Those hateful words certainly do not promote good will among at least half of the population. If that type of trash talk and “sexism” continues in our ongoing discussions, then I plan to write to President Obama myself and tell him how very disappointed I am that his election has not produced the kind of respect that all Americans deserve.By Patty

For those of you that want to insult Joe the Plumber, Joe is just an average middle class citizen. He asked Obama a question and was not expecting the answer he got. Obama’s tax plan was on many peoples minds and this man asked the question. Obama was the one that said spread the wealth around. Oops he slipped letting the peasants know his real plan. Our Ohio government officials quickly jumped to discredit Joe. One of the great things about our country is that the government works for us. We own the government not the other way around. Ohio government betrayed the people of Ohio and the people of America. Our government is not suppose to discredit a citizen for asking a candidate a question. Those of you down on Joe I guess would not dare to question our government and you must feel our government owns us and we work for them. Is that why they are rich and we are not? We keep letting our government do whatever they want - our government tells us it is corporate greed and they are working hard for us. Then why have our government officials continue to raise taxes, raise their salaries and probably get bonuses all the while our income stays the same? Those of you that are not mad that our government officials discredited Joe the Plumber are the ones that continue to allow our government officials to take our freedoms way and raise our taxes so they can raise their salaries. When is all this madness going to stop? When are we going to be brave like our fore fathers and fight back? This has been and is a great country, but our politicans are no different than the CEOs - they are corrupt and greedy. Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country. This is America land of the free! America needs us to stop our government!By TRS

It is an absolute joke to consider Palin for any job that requires interaction with the citizens of our country or any other foreign country. Palin was selected for the role of VP candidate because she fit specific demographic areas; female, from a western state, gun lover, hunter, housewife, governor, evangelical. and, she has great t*ts. (which appears to satisfy some republicans), kind of like the legs of anne coulter. But, Palin and her hillbilly clan would be detrimental to our country. Joe the whatever he is, will end up doing bit parts until his short fame wears out. He probably will never be a true plumber and will never purchase a plumbing business.By Ethel S.

What is wrong with trying to earn a living as Joe the Plumber is trying to do? And I enjoyed his part of the political campaign because it was very informative. Looking forward to Gov. Sarah Palin’s future campaigns. She was the bright spot of the 2008 year. Right now, there are more turkeys in DC than were on everyone’s Thanksgiving tables this year. Cannot wait for the breath of fresh Northern air Gov. Palin to come back again to run for President in 2012.By Raoul

Right about now, the only ‘fakes’ in the last election cycle were Obama/Biden. They ran an anti-Clinton campaign to win the nomination, and told everyone that they would bring change that we can believe in. Well, it looks like the Clinton’s have won the election and it looks now like we are going back to 1992, with all the former players back on the field. Not only that, many of the same guys that helped bring about the collapse of the economy are now trusted to bring us back out (while still making millions). Now, if they would just bring back Sandy Berger, the super duper new team will be complete. So, I guess we don’t need to worry about Joe and Sarah; as fakers go, they have a lot to learn from our new (old) leadership.By usi

If the repubs want to utilize idiots like Joe the whatever he is and the wasilla hillbilly, go for it. It just shows the total stupidity of the republican party. And, to defend these people as the right wing tends to do, shows that they just like to push moronic candidates on the american public. Perhaps it is the republican way… If they have a candidated that is dumber than most of the population, they can pass them off as being part of the status quo.. Bush was an example of a candidate that lacked intellectual abilities. Palin, another example. And Joe the whatever he is, as a caricature of the “common man”. Owing back taxes doesn’t mean you cheated any system. He didn’t dispute owing them and said he didn’t know about them. While the state is supposed to notify you of such leins often they send it to the wrong address and you are unaware of it until such time as you apply for a loan, sell real estate, etc. Joe paid his tax bill. His only crime - asking your candidate a question that caused a stumble. It is ironic that people who were concerned about the privacy of terrorists think its just fine to dig into a private citizen’s background.
