Voters sour on Strickland’s handling of economy
Ohio voters don’t like how Gov. Ted Strickland is handling the economy - a first for the Democratic governor - but Strickland’s overall approval rating, while down, remains solid.
Those are key findings from a Quinnipiac University poll released on Tuesday, March 17. For full results, click here.
The poll, taken as the national and state economies continue to flounder, found that voters disapprove of Strickland’s handling of the economy, 45-39 percent. In a poll released Feb. 5, voters approved of Strickland’s handling of the economy, 44-37 percent.
Also, the new poll found Strickland had a 56-30 percent job approval rating, down from a 63-25 percent approval rating in the Feb. 5 poll.
In another finding, voters narrowly disapproved - 46-43 percent- Strickland’s use of one-time money to balance his proposed state budget. Overall, however, they approved of how Strickland is handling the state budget, 44-36 percent.
Here’s your chance to get in on the debate about Strickland’s handling of the economy.
[an error occurred while processing this directive]“The movement is not large, but the fact that support for a number of his proposals and his handling of the economy is off that much and more is an indication that the public anxiety over the economy is taking its toll on his support,” Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute said in a press release.
In other poll results, voters:
Supported by a 75-21 margin a proposal on the Nov. 3 ballot to give those who served in the armed forces during recent wars a bonus of up to $1,000.
Approved 64-29 percent Strickland’s plan to resume passenger train service between Columbus, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Dayton.
*Favored Strickland over Republican John Kasich, 51-31 percent in a 2010 governor’s race matchup.
*Favored Strickland over Republican Mike DeWine, 50-34 percent in a 2010 governor’s race matchup.
*Had mixed views on whether Strickland’s plans will improve education in Ohio, with 31 percent saying “yes”, 29 percent “no” and 40 percent saying they didn’t know.
*Approved, 55-39 percent, Strickland’s proposal to increase the school year from 180 days to 200 days.
The poll was taken Tuesday, March 10, through Monday, March 15, with 1,299 Ohio voters and had a margin of error of plus or minus 2.7 percentage points.

I strongly disagree with the across the board slashing of funds for charter schools. The bad ones should be closed-but so should the bad public school systems. My grandsons attend charter schools. One who is handicapped would never have gotten the aid he needed in Dayton-My other grandson attends DECA and will have a good start on college before he graduates. The charter schools receive the exact same money as the public schools, but seem to do so much more with it. Kids in Dayton are afraid to go to school because of the violence. That type of behavior is not tolerated in the good charter schools, in fact there is strict conduct regs and instilling a sense of personal pride and achievement in the charter schools.By JKS

The state does not have the money to do things for all people in the manner that has gone before. Times have changed. People are going to have to change with it. There is no free ride for anyone. I don’t agree with all of the governor’s decisions- but I don’t see the entire picture- only what impacts me. Most people are that way. The budget needs to be balanced and that is the bottom line.By lou

Max, Cali. tried it and the schools went bankrupt trying to pay the teachers. Remember teachers are paid per deim, no vac or holiday. Increase by 20 days means a lot of money from somewhere. Besides the best education you can get is from family vac when you actually see things you study. No time for that, back to book kearning which is no learning.By AmericanSoldier

CORRECTIONS: As a former resident of Blanchester, I’ve never been more ashamed of the number of Ohioans who were STUPID enough to vote for a Socialist Lib-Democrat in the White House…for a second time. “Jimmah” Carter was the first one, and we suffered from that dolt for years - Thank GOD for Reagan! After voting for Obama, I’m NOT surprised that Ohioans are STUPID enough to do anything, let alone have a Democrat in the Governor’s Mansion. Ohioans are usually smarter than this, but you’ve helped bring the upcoming “good times” by messiah Obama and his talking heads, such as “your esteemed Governor.” The economy? Just wait…By AmericanSoldier

Strickland is an Obama bobblehead. Whatever Obama says, Ted agrees. These two no-nothings were elected by the welfare and handout portion of the population. My cats know more about business than these two socialist divots. Having these two watch and “help” the economy is like handing a loaded gun to a three year old kid. You anti-business, anti-Republicans voted them in, now I have to suffer the cosequences. I really DON’T care if you suffer, in fact, it makes me grin!By Carl

Re:education….Strickland wants to increase state funds to public schools by 7%…..But he wants to increase the school day/year by approx 10 - 15%…That still leaves the districts to increase revenues by 8% and they are struggling now..Cost more to pay teachers, higher utilities, higher food costs, higher transportation….STUPID!!! and since it is my understanding that there is no other state in this country doing this, where is the data that says this is going to work???By NoChuck

Chuck, we aren’t in Cuba where Fidel Castro can arrest anyone whom he doesn’t like. The President of the US doesn’t have that kind of power, and shouldn’t. If you want to be ruled by a dictator, pack your bags and head south.By St. Patty

Ted seeks to typify many Ohioians - he isn’t proactive, blames others, and waits for someone else (Obama) to do his job. This state will never advance until its people, businesses and governments take the initiative themselves to move Ohio forward and quit waiting on someone or something else to do it for them - us.By Chuck

Gov Strickland is doing fine. The poll mentioned in the article shows how voters feel about the economy of the nation. I am a little disppointed that Mr Obama hasn’t arrested certain members of the previous administration yet.By Mr.DadSir

It appears his education plan, which has big effects on the economy and the current budget plan, was poorly staffed and researched. It is another example of how unsophisticated and unprepared government bureaucracies are to handle bureaucracies and to shift the direction of travel. Essentially, bureaucracies are status quo employment agencies for bureaucrats, not government leaders. Generally speaking, these bureaucrats are not smart or capable enough to understand or exert power within the “sausage making” bureaucracy, but they do collect pay checks and get promotions.
