Strickland not likely to veto 65 mph for trucks
Gov. Ted Strickland is “not likely” to veto legislation raising the speed limits for trucks on interstates to 65 mph if the proposal reaches his desk.
Amanda Wurst, Strickland’s spokeswoman, said on Wednesday, April 1, that Strickland is concerned about the safety issue if the increase should become law and would encourage the Ohio State Highway Patrol to very strictly enforce the 65 mph limit. The speed limit for trucks on interstates now is 55 mph.
The provision raising the speed limit is part of the $9.2 billion state transportation budget that the legislature is expected to approve and send to Strickland today, April 1. Strickland expects to sign the bill today so it can go in effect by July 1, the start of the new fiscal year. He has the authority to veto sections of it, however.

Cameron, please get your FACTS straight before shooting off your mouth. The OSP does NOT make money from writing tickets. Their budget comes from the Ohio General Fund. States like Florida however ARE different in the way they fund their Highway Patrols. The Florida Highway Patrol is funded in a large way from ticket revenue. The OSP is a world reknowned and respected for their Professionalism. The OSP is 2nd to NONE when it comes to being PROFESSIONAL! They will have their hands full enforcing the new 65 MPH on Trucks!By farmby

No Way! Truckers are horrible drivers that well exceed the limit now. They cut you off, rarely have assured clear distance and can’t stop in time. The highways would be so much better without trucks.By tore up

I am a truck driver and I personally think that to have a split speed limit is very unsafe. I mean, they raised the speed limit for trucks to 65 on the turnpike in ohio and the accident rate hasn’t gone up. To have cars speeding around other slow vehicles and darting in and out of traffic is just insane.By Old Bus

Indiana is 70mph, Kentucky is 70mph, Tennessee is 70mph. Lots of other states are 70mph for passenger cars and trucks with a 65mph for big trucks. Come on Ohio, step up to the plate.By Cin

It’s about time! I always felt bad for them chugging along so slow, when in other states, they can drive 65 or more. I’d like to see Ohio go to the 70mph limit too, as long as the area of the roadway is safe!By Cin

Thats great and all. But everyone is forgetting that Ohio is notorious for being a revenue driven Highway Patrol state. Now that the Highway Patrol can’t pull over a semi for driving with the flow of traffic they will be making it up by pulling everyone over for any minor infraction…By null

It is about time. Ohio took to long in catching up to the rest of the country, there is no reason why trucks and cars can not travel the same speed and reduced it for all in the necessary areas. It has worked well in PA,IN, KY and elsewhere. So it should work here, the only problem is the State Patrol will lose some of thier retirement income.By Libertarian
