Ohioans give Obama 63 percent approval rating; Strickland approval stands at 56 percent

Ohioans gave President Barack Obama a 63 percent approval rating in an Ohio Poll released on Thursday, April 30. For full results, click here.

The rating for the Democratic president is similar to those initially received by former Presidents George W. Bush (60 percent), Bill Clinton (56 percent), George H.W. Bush (63 percent) and Ronald Reagan (61 percent).

In the poll, sponsored by the University of Cincinnati, Gov. Ted Strickland’s approval rating stood at 56 percent. This is the lowest Ohio Poll rating for Strickland since he took office in January 2007 and the first time his approval rating has been below 60 percent in the Ohio Poll.

Here’s your chance to rate Obama and Strickland.

What do you think of how President Obama is handling his job?

What do you think of how Gov. Ted Strickland is handling his job?

Obama and Strickland, both Democrats, find themselves in top leadership spots as Ohio and the nation continue to face tough economic times.

It was the first Ohio Poll on Obama’s performance since he took office in January. Ohioans divided sharply along party lines in evaluating his performance. While 89 percent of Democrats approved of how Obama, who carried Ohio last year, is doing his job, just 30 percent of Republicans approved. Perhaps more importantly for Obama, 54 percent of Republicans approved of his performance.

On the economy, 56 percent approved of Obama’s performance. On foreign affairs, 62 percent approved.

Strickland, who’s expected to seek re-election next year, saw his approval rating - now at 56 percent - slip from 61 percent in May 2008 and from a high of 68 percent in May 2007. Nearly half - 48 percent - approved of his handling of the economy, about the same as the 51 percent in May 2008.

The partisan divide over Strickland’s performance wasn’t as sharp as that for Obama. Among Democrats, 70 percent approved his performance while 43 percent of Republicans approved. Nearly half - 49 percent - of independents approved his performance.

Ohioans were gloomy about the state and national economies. Nationally, 52 percent rated economic conditions as poor. For Ohio, 51 percent said the economic conditions were poor and 67 percent said the conditions in the state were getting worse, while just 20 percent said they were getting better.

As for the future, 50 percent thought Obama’s economic policies would make conditions better in the country in the next 12 months. Just 43 percent, however, said the president’s policies would make economic conditions in Ohio better during the next 12 months.

The poll was taken between April 16 and Monday. April 27, with 818 adults and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percent.

Ever since Bush and Cheney lied about the reasons for going to war in Iraq, And before, when Bush actually lost the popular vote in 2000. And, when the Republican party chose to align with religious fanatics and the neocon agenda, they lost touch with the American public. The Rebublicans are a “movement” and not a political party. Perhaps since the republicans chose to embrace religion, torture of human beings, conflict of interest and other crimes, they should consider themselves organized crime. Let alone, a certain republican congressman from Florida, text messaging kids for immoral purposes, A certain republican senator, looking for Gay sex in an airport, and the head of the evangelicals, who was into meth and gay sex. (these actions committed while the republican party claimed some sort of “moral authority”) It is important to remember the past, so it isn’t repeated. So, for those that choose to align with the GOP, the guns and the bibles, we normal and, most certainly majority of true Americans will continue to laugh at you and beat you up in elections.

Mr. poodle it’s obvious you have very little education or are not using what you do have. You repeat the lib mantra hoping if you say it long enough people will believe it.Also much like Mr.Gore you make up “facts” as you go along and vote how you are told. You have my deepest sympathy.

It’s funny how people talk about socialism and don’t realize just how much the U.S. actually uses it. I have taken 3 business classes and all three of them stated that the U.S. would need more socialist programs in order to survive and the E.U. would need more capitalism in order to survive.

I am a 41 year old Black male and I have supported every president that we have had. From Nixon to Obama, I have given them all my support because that was how I was raised. Some of you needed better parenting skills and need to take a class in citizenship. Shameful.

Because more educated people tend to vote Democratic. Also, in the most recent election those with master’s degrees and those making over $200,000 a year went with Obama. It’s an educated guess. Heh.

So, what, you’re making fun of his name? How old are you? See, this is why we run things and you don’t. Countries are complicated and hard to run. You can’t be a moron and run a country. You can’t be a moron and make good voting decisions, as was apparently the case for you. What saddens me is that even though you are morally undeserving of a good country to live in, you will have one anyway because your betters will make good decisions for you.

Baffled, cap-and-trade taxes will be implemented along with tax credits in other areas so that they’re tax-neutral. What was that you were saying about doing your research?

George, every single poll taken since election day has shown strong approval ratings for Obama. Every. Single. Poll. This is why you hick Republicans keep losing - you’re totally out of touch with reality. You can’t face facts and deal with them, so you invent your own facts. Individual polls are sometimes wrong, but they’re not all wrong.

Yet another poll carefully created to enable a headline putting Obama in good light. Propaganda. Pure and simple. Obama has been an unmitigated disaster for America…and has only gotten started. I agree that only Americans paying close attention have a clue about how bad he has been for our country. If you don’t believe me, why does the polling organization not publish the demographics on the 818 people they sampled? Because most of them were Obama supporters….

Friar - What you wrote is false. The issues is when a couple filing jointly both have their withholding amounts reduced, the net reduction is too high in some cases and will need to be repaid. But to say that these reductions are all due back on April 15th is an absurd lie.

Jim, You’re ignorant. The fine print on the tax cuts so you can take home more money is just a loan. Guess what, that lower withholding you’re getting you will have to repay next year by April 15th when you pay your taxes. Don’t believe me? Go ask a CPA. Tax cuts, right….

Alonzo and friends: Look at a map of red and blue states. Then look at a map of poor vs. rich states. Finally, look at a map of less educated vs. more educated states. Notice how most of the blue states are rich and well-educated, like CT, and most of the red states are places like Mississippi and Arkansas. Are you catching my point?

Large majorities of the whole country hate - really, really detest - the GOP. Obama is extremely popular and his popularity is rising. Those of you who are complaining need to come to terms with the fact that you are, for the most part, ignorant hicks and the country is leaving you behind. I’d recommend you vote to make Warren County (where most of you no doubt live) an honorary part of Alabama, where you belong. Yee haw!

after living in many other states (you guys need to get out more) I realize Ohioans are not ambitious, not educated, stuck in the factory mentality, racist, and don’t know what socialism, fascism, or any -ism really means. The GOP has done a good job here!

Pete, A big part of Obama’s stimulus spending (over 300 billion) is going toward cutting taxes for 95% of the tax paying public. How is that socialism? I thought you conservatives favored tax cuts?
