Tenants get foreclosure protection in House bill

The Ohio House has approved legislation aimed at protecting tenants when their landlords face foreclosure.

“Displacing families who pay their rent is bad for communities,” Rep. Ted Celeste, D-Grandview Heights, a chief co-sponsor, said before the House voted 53-42 for House Bill 9 on Wednesday, May 6.

Rep. Shannon Jones, R-Springboro, voted “no.” She said the bill might have the unintended consequence of discouraging investors who don’t want to become landlords from buying properties that have been foreclosed on.

The bill would require:

*Landlords of residential properties to give renters written notice of a foreclosure action.

*Landlords facing foreclosure to give renters 21-day notice of a sheriff’s sale of the property.

*That a rental agreement for a residential property sold under a foreclosure action be converted to a month-to-month agreement.

Why does everyone assume the renter is not paying; what about a totally disabled person paying the rent with their disability on time all the time and the owner doesn’t pay the mortgage? To me, it seems not only is the owner hurting the renter but is also using federal funds for his own purposes instead of what the money was intended and that should be a federal crime. Why should the renter be punished? How long does the owner continue to take the renter’s money until notified; not until the sheriff comes and puts the card on the door; that’s how long so someone tell me how far behind does that landlord/owner have to be behind before that happens? Shouldn’t the renter be entitled to their money back from when the whole mess started. The owner is acting in bad faith, doesn’t care one nickel about the disabled renter or about taking the ssdi intended for them or how fast they can move either. There should be some recourse for the renter to retrieve some of their money so they can move and have extra time to do it and before anyone says it not everybody that is on ssdi is a cheat either; the one I speak of built airplanes, including for the air force for 35 years, she has a spinal cord injury, had several heart attacks, diabetes, just to name a few so give the renters a break; it is the owners here that is at fault and not only robbing the renter but also the social security administration too.

Let me get this correct. The LANDLORD who has been collecting rent and NOT PAYING THE BANK. Is now required by law to notify the renter. How stupid are you people. Just another stupid law.

thats right, give them more rights! if they paid their rents on time, londlords might not end up in foreclosure! they already have all the rights.
