Congressman Turner slams paper after story on $1,435 camera purchase

By Jessica Wehrman Staff Writer

WASHINGTON — The Wall Street Journal’s Saturday edition raised questions about a $1,435 digital camera purchased by U.S. Rep. Mike Turner’s office for official purposes.

The example was part of a larger story on how U.S. House members spend their office allowances, and found other lawmakers using their office accounts for everything from leasing Lexus sedans to purchasing $22 cell phone holders. The expenditures are all legal, but described by the newspaper as “eye-catching.” The newspaper did the investigation after British lawmakers have come under increasing scrutiny for how they use taxpayer money.

Turner, R-Centerville, released a statement calling the report “misleading and factually incorrect.”

“The camera the Journal references is not for the personal use of Congressman Turner, but for official use,” the statement said. Turner also took exception to the Journal’s claim that the camera was “expensed,” saying that the camera was purchased through the U.S. House of Representatives system and is government property.

“The camera is no different than other equipment purchased through the U.S. House for the congressional office and is part of the effort to expand our web and internet-based communications, which includes video, computer and camera equipment,” the statement read.

U.S. House offices receive a government allowance of $1.3 million to $1.9 million a year, while Senate offices get anywhere from $2.9 million to $4.5 million. The Journal reported that some members don’t spend their full allocation. House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-West Chester, for example, had $228,000 left in his account at the end of 2008.

I read what it says, but it just dont sink in .1.3 to 1.9 million. So Boehner only wasted 1.6 million.I am retired my retirement lost more than he saved last year.So when do I need to stop spending?Better yet when do they need to STOP spending.

Judy, SHE is racist. She said that her being ethnic gives her experiences to better be in the courtroom than a white man.

Judy I don’t even consider Ethnicity, I look at their Resume, she is on record saying the people in the First Amendment are not the same People in the Second Amendment, what do you think about that? she also thinks her job is to SET POLICY, lets see we have The Legislative branch, the Judicial branch, and the Excecutive branch , tell me JUDY what are their Duties.and she wrote a book about International Law, can we trust her then to uphold our U.S.Constitution, she has to swear an oath to do so, we already have Ruth Bader Ginsberg making rulings and looking to Europe to see what they are doing, I say Impeach her.what do you think JUDY.

Philman, you’re worried about a Latino women who has experience, compassion and very competent decision making abilities being nominated to the supreme court? I take it you’re not basing your objections on intelligence but rather racism and America deciding to put an end to the ‘Good ‘ol Boys’ club so that all people in this country are finally treated properly and fairly.

Is this really how Mike Turner is using our tax money? You know, for an area that is losing so many jobs, property value being down, and thus less money for the City & State to operate, I would have hoped for some financial restraint from Mr. Turner. Everyone I know has had to cut back on spending for ‘Essential’ and ‘Discretionary’ spending. I would have hoped that Mr. Turner would have done the same. It’s not that it’s a camera that bothers me, it’s that Mike Turner doesn’t seem to get that we’re in a serious recession right now : (

Tbill, to the amateur eye, you will not be able to tell this difference between a $100 camera and a $1000. Mostly, because you probably wouldn’t know how to use it to its full potential. I just spent $800 on a camera and lens and UV filter because for print use, a $100 point and click doesn’t take high enough resolution and especially not decent macro/movement/low light shots. Buying a camera is cheaper than hiring a photographer.

I just cannot believe all the hullabaloo over a camera. One guy said he wants to see the pictures. Hmmm, wonder if Turner has an office copy machine? Gosh, maybe someone has been using it xerox their behind instead of work? Come on. Don’t we have something better to talk about? What’s next, hand wringing over a government coffee maker?

Just so we’re all clear- Most people get a cell phone holder, or case, when they get a cell phone. Whether it be personal or business use. And $22 is not a bad price. Go to Verizon or Sprint and check out the cases there, they run $20 and up.

By Jeremy

May 31, 2009 11:47 AM | Link to this

As an amateur photographer I don’t see what the issue is. Professional organizations or offices that need to have images taken should use nothing less than an SLR else it will look cheap. Between my 2 point and clicks, SLR, and lenses I think I have spent over $2000 easily. $1435 for a camera is about the right range.

It’s ironic that the DDN just ran a web article on amateur and professional photography and how the city left the lights on all night so that photographers could take skyline photos — I bet that cost more than Turner’s camera.

It’s just a darn piece of office equipment - whatever - a laptop or camera - what’s the big deal? If the newspaper is going to micromanage what’s spent, then let’s focus on the real source of waste - these massive gov bailouts and payouts.

By JJ

May 31, 2009 9:58 AM | Link to this

I’m an amateur photographer, using lower quality “professional” equipment, and easily have $1500 invested between the camera body and lenses. Professional photojournalists easily have $4000 invested in the camera body alone. Plus, a telephoto lens used by a sports photographer goes for near $10,000. When you see a sports photographer, with multiple camera bodies and multiple lenses, they easily have equipment worth as much as most of us make in a year. So, $1500 to get good quality professional looking shots is a fraction of what it could be.

Tom— HR676 is something no politician in any party wants you to find out about, because it would mean they would have to give up all the money they take from insurance and pharmaceutical companies. You can google HR676 and find all the details, but basically it’s single payer health care.

No extravagance in getting a well made camera for heavy use. I’ve been through 4 myself in three years and I am reminded of the penny wise pound foolish saying. I guess I put down 2 grand to replace cams that didn’t hold up to constant use. I should have just bought a higher end one from the start. I bet the newspaper doesn’t use point and shoots. I looked at something like they use and they start at $3 grand. People will knit pick but I dont see the big deal.

Before I leave I must ask this question: Why would anybody listen to Rush? He’s a demagogue who plays on peoples emotions just so he can make a lot of money….he’s a politician. I don’t know if he believes all that crap he says but I fail to understand why anyone would listen to him. I’m black, I feel the exact same about Jesse Jackson and I don’t listen to him, either. That always baffled me. They are both very unintelligent worthless men who seek to inflame passions and cause divisions in weak minded people.

I would much rather see a good white politician spending tax dollars than giving it to affirmative action. All the colored people do with the money is buy guns and shoot each other. Exactly Max. The real issue isn’t that Turner spent $1500 on a camera. It’s the fact that he spent $1500 dollars on a camera when people are losing their jobs. But he’s not the only one. The only reason Obama got elected was because of an affirmative action clause in title 68 of the constitution which says that a colored person had to win the presidency before the year 2009 or the world was going to come to an end and all the white people would have to go back to Africa. Me and Rush read it and discussed it on his show. Title 68 or 88 I forget which one but look it up before you dispute it.

As for your racial overtone, it’s unfortunate you have to bring race into it. When Bush used our money last September to bail out Wall Street, now that’s what I call welfare. I just don’t understand why Obama had to take his wife all the way to NY to see a colored play. Don’t they have colored plays in DC? Isn’t that supposed to be the colored capital of the US. I dunno it seems expensive to me. We are in a recession and he could have just taken her to the show and got a hamburger. I bet that David sings…Are you washed in the blood,It is well with my soul,The old rugged cross, amazing grace, mansion over the hilltop, through it all,we will glorify, there’s just something about that name, peace in the valley, magesty, rise again, sweet sweet spirit. Must I go on?? Now leave David alone you stalker!!

Obama has been in office for less than 6 months, how is he the most liberal president ever? Based on what facts? Yes, I am Catholic, and I believe in words that Jesus said “The law kills but the spirit gives life”. I believe all the laws that we live in now make us a schizophrenic society. We can’t tell the difference between truth and the lies we’ve been told everyday by the past presidents. As for Obama’s apologies, do you think it’s right we tortured innocent people? Don’t you think we should apologize for that?

Max,do not waste your breath praying for me for my name is in the book of life and no one can take me out of my Fathers hands not even self rightous ones like you who make all christians look bad. You of little faith and little knowledge of politics. As for Turner he is a great man. I do not believe for one minute that you campaigned for him. If you did, you would not say such things.

You have made me very curious because of your reluctance to admit to what songs you sing in church and believe in. Every Christian I have ever met is always very happy to admit to what songs they sing. As for the $1,500.00, yes, that is entiely to much money for Mike Turner to be spending on a camera using our tax money in a severe recession when we have over 10% unemployment. I cold have bought one for him for $200.00 that works amazing. Anything above that is wasteful.

Max, you are all over the map here. I think you are very sleepy. Yes, I do look at the difference between the 2 Prez and favor Bush. To be a catholic, you are suppose to be pro life but it sounds like you may not be a true catholic. You think Obamas morals are good? Based on what? The Koran?? He is the most liberal prez we have had in history. Was Bush perfect? No. At least he will admit it. When the book comes out from Bush, please read it, you may learn some things. Bush stood for what he believed in and as you say lying to us? That is what Clinton did when he pointed his bad finger at us about miss Monica. Even Clinton was an angle comparred to the Oman.I do believe that Clinton and Bush love this country and Obama does nothing but apolagize for everything we stand for and have ever done since George Washington.

Max, should we change the topic of this article to “The Hymns that David sings at Church!” This isn’t an article on Church songs man! Besides you never answered about accusing me of “forgetting God.” This is an article about out of control spending in Washington. $1500 bucks isn’t a lot for a good camera but look at the MILLIONS of dollars given to Congress as an allowance. Are we all this daft that we worry about what hymns I sing in Church instead of where our money is going?

David, should I assume you did sing Hallelujah in church then? Ashley, are you saying Bush never lied to Americans? Matt, are you saying that Bush’s walk matched his talk on Christianity? I’m a Catholic so I attend church on Saturday’s. As for Mr. Turner, I know him from campaigning for him. I know many things that others don’t it seems.

Max, wanna know how much I tithe too? I’m curious why you want to know so much about me and not debate the facts of this article. Is Hallelujah the only hymn you know? You accused me of forgetting God in your first post and I have not attacked your faith at all. Yet you seem focused on mine. How odd

By Matt

May 31, 2009 4:47 AM | Link to this

Max, you should know you can go to church for 100 years and not be a born again christian. See Obamas walk, it doesn’t match his talk. So did you start sing the halleluiah song before or after Obama won?? Now, shouldn’t you be in bed if you are going to get up for church in the morning???

By Bruce

Max, I don’tn need to trump up anything about any politician. The truth is damning enough. Any act of degeneracy by any politician of any political party should be dealt with swift removal from position of power and criminal prosecution. As far as I’m concerned Jesus overturned the money changers at the temple and as good Christians we should overturn all of our incumbent politicians. Plenty of room at Guantanamo bay for our Congressmen once we remove the lesser terrorists.

By Ashley

May 31, 2009 4:41 AM | Link to this

Max, about Godliness? Obama can’t make a speach without bashing President Bush which Bush refuses to bash him! Also, the cross is about freedom from our sins and that is what Bush was all about, FREEDOM. He did not lie, and I am so tired of you saying that. He made a decision on what he was told by many, many others including the previous administration. At least Bush has the Godliness in him to admit a mistake unlike Obama who he thinks is the Mesiiah!

By Max

May 31, 2009 4:40 AM | Link to this

David, I don’t understand why you won’t answer the simple question of whether you sing Hallelujah in your church? It’s a simple question. If I’m not mistaken didn’t Obama attend a bible preaching church for Easter? The same church that Bush attended for Easter?

By David

May 31, 2009 4:26 AM | Link to this

Max, I’m still not getting you and the whole hymn thing. Why are you mad about lying politicians? That’s what we pay them for! This Nation was founded on Judeo-Christian values. Obama tells the world that we aren’t a Christian Nation. Obama refuses to participate publicly in the National Day of Prayer. Obama still has not found a Bible preaching church to attend since leaving his racist preaching one in Chicago. Deny Jesus before man and he will deny you before His Father. Obama may be a good man but let’s not confuse a good man with a Christ like man.

I know Mike Turner personally as I have worked on many of his campaigns. For those who said he was a sure Republican vote, I can tell you that he’s not. He voted for the SCHIP program which many Republicans voted against. There have been other votes in which he bucked Republican line as well. I don’t always agree with what he does, but I can believe in why he does it; because his constituents want it or he thinks that it’s the best for his district. As for why does he need a camera for official use. He makes appearances at events and community functions. His staff photographs him at these events and then puts it on his website. It’s just that simple. I think that making hay over this camera was stupid. I would have said the same thing had it been a Democrat in office who used it for the same purpose.

By max

May 31, 2009 4:15 AM | Link to this

David, out of curiosity how hasn’t Obama acted like a christian? I have found him to be a very outstanding man thus far. I did get a bit angry at my own party however, as I don’t feel my fellow Republicans have acted like Good Christians with the lies they have made up and all the racist remarks they have made. That’s not very Christian don’t you think? So have you ever sang Hallelujah?

By David

May 31, 2009 4:09 AM | Link to this

Max, thank you for the compliment but don’t apologize for me. I said what I meant so there’s no need for an apology. Obama has not behaved like a Christian and like all politicians, he is a LIAR. We sing a wide variety of hymns at my church, you are welcome to attend. The original article was about Mike Turner and out of control congressional spending. Not sure how this turned to racism and hate

By max

May 31, 2009 3:58 AM | Link to this

Ashley, I am sorry you have so much hate in your heart. I’m not sure why you feel qualified to discount that I have voted Republican ever since Nixon, or the fact that I have attended the same Christian church for 32 years. When I pray I pray directly to God. The God of Abraham, which if you go to church you would know that he is the God of Hebrew, Christian, and Islam.

By max

May 31, 2009 3:53 AM | Link to this

Bruce, When I read your comments it seemed to me like you were trumping up charges against democrats spending but you were ignoring all of the enormously ridiculous, and highly questionable spending of our own Republican party. Am I wrong? Also you seemed to have left out how our congressmen are soliciting sex from other men in bathrooms and having sex with underage pages. Did I mis-read?

By Bruce

May 31, 2009 3:32 AM | Link to this

Max, thank you for praying for me but apologies for me are really unwarranted. I’m with you on the Obama being a moral leader and see the achievement of overcoming racism to become the first multi-racial President as a huge step forward in this great nation. However, I offer zero apologies for my comments. I just state facts that are public knowledge. I’m no fan of any party, Rep/Dem, that condones corruption and power broking at the expense of the taxpayer. Zero apologies.

So Mike Turner spends $1500.00 on a camera. Is that any better than Dem. Sen. Dianne Fienstein steering a $25,000,000,000.00 federalcontract to her husbands firm a few weeks ago. Or is it any better than Dem. Sen Barney Frank having a relationship with an executive from Freddie Mac while on the Senate Finance Commitee. Or is it any better than Dem. Sen Roland Burriss paying to play to gain his senate seat. I predict many top level Democrats behind bars by the end of Obama’s only term.

I swear, the intelligence in this region is practically vacant. Does the Wall Street Journal ask their photographers how much their camera cost? $1435 is the cost for a professional camera (and probably at the lower end of things) not assuming that that wasn’t including the cost of a lens. I’m looking at SLR camera’s right now. The Rebel (which is a semi-pro camera) at it’s highest with a lens is about $900. It’s for official use - they don’t want amateur quality photos. I plan to write mine off too! I sell my photography online.
