Umbilical cord blood bill passes House

Pregnant women in Ohio would be told about the benefits of donating their newborn’s umbilical cord blood, if a bill adopted by the Ohio House on Wednesday June 3 becomes law.

The House voted unanimously in favor of the Cord Blood Education Bill.

“This critically important health care bill will promote steps that save lives,” said Rep. Todd Book, D-McDermott. “Cord blood donation is easy, and parents can donate it to a public bank or store it for possible family use.”

Cord blood is from a newborn’s umbilical cord and the placenta. It is collected after a baby is delivered and the cord has been clamped and cut.

There are more than 75 diseases that can now be helped through cord blood transplantation, including sickle cell anemia, diabetes, and blood cancers, according to Book.

Ohio Right to Life, the Catholic Council of Churches, and the National Cord Blood Registry support the bill, which now goes to the Senate for consideration.

Expectant parents in Ohio could soon benefit from better information about the lifesaving stem cells in their baby’s umbilical cord and the options for preserving them if the state Senate agrees to pass a well-supported, bi-partisan education bill passed by the House. House Bill 102, which does not require additional funding, would task the Ohio Department of Health with providing cord blood banking information and encouraging health care professionals to educate parents about the options to preserve the stem cells for family use or donate them for public use.

You don’t need a bill to inform people or educate. This is still America. What is more important is passing the Ohio Sovereignty Resolution. Obama does not understand or care about the 10th amendment. Take care of what is important and protect our state from the Federal Government that is trying to take away our State Sovereignty. We are not going to live in a Marxist society. Uphold the constitution and get this legislation through.
