Strickland approval rating dips to 43 percent
Gov. Ted Strickland’s approval rating has dipped to 43 percent and Republican John Kasich is nipping at Strickland’s heels in a hypothetical matchup for the 2010 governor’s race.
Public Policy Polling of Raleigh, N.C., on Sunday, June 21, released results of a poll with the disappointing results for Democrat Strickland.
The survey found that 43 percent approved Strickland’s performance while 42 disapproved. A January survey found 48 percent approved and 35 percent disapproved.
In the hypothetical matchup with Republican Kasich, Strickland led 44-42, a virtual dead heat with the survey’s margin of error of plus or minus 3.9 percent. In January, Strickland led Kasich 45-39 percent.
Dean Debnam, PPP president, said in a press release that midwestern states have been hit hard by the recession and that governors are paying the political price.
“We are seeing pretty low approval ratings for chief executives across most of the region as voters wait to see what they will do to turn things around,” said Debnam.
The survey found Strickland support waning among the state’s critical bloc of independent voters. Kasich led 54-33 percent among this group. Kasich appeared to be gaining even though a plurality of voters said they didn’t know enough about him to have an opinion.
Among those who had an opinion, 31 percent viewed him favorably and 30 percent had an unfavorable opinion.
Strickland also got just 52 percent among black voters- usually a reliable Democratic constituency - against Kasich. However, there was good news for Strickland among white voters. He was basically running even with Kasich. According to a PPP analysis, “any Democrat who can split the white vote in Ohio is going to win statewide.”
The survey was taken from Wednesday, June 17 to Friday, June 19, with 619 voters. The poll concluded on the day Strickland proposed putting video slot machines at Ohio tracks to help fill a $3.2 billion budget hole. He also proposed $2.4 billion in budget cuts.

I’m not surprised about Strickland…I was a Blackwell supporter anyways…the library cuts are pathetic… Why not cut all income tax and have a straight sales tax across the board for EVERYONE has to pay (whether on assistance or not)…seems fair to me. And what is up with gas prices in Ohio? I was down south a few weeks ago and gas prices were at least .60 cheaper and didn’t jump up .20 come the weekends. I don’t think it’s the economy in Ohio…how ‘bout greed.

I would hope that voters become more informed before making decisions at the polls. Nothing shocks me about Ted. Did more homework this time. Blackwell would have been better at the job.

If you think times are bad now wait until John Kasich does away with the income taxes and we are left with no schools or colleges

Although I would have thought this impossible, Strickland is less competent than his predecessor. He unequivically promised job creation, and bad economy or not, has doe ZERO to even

Taft had us tanking while the economy was still good. Strickland promised to bring ethics back to the office and fix the economy & the schools. Hasn’t accomplished any of them. Next time you vote try not to just voting for a guy because of his party but vote for a person you believe will do what is needed.

I voted for Strickland because he said he was going to fix the school funding problem. All I’m hearing is reguirements that will cost more. He’s planning on giving more of my money to the schools to waste.

What the paper fails to mention and what we arent hearing enough of; is that Mr. Strickland also wants to do away with all government aided child care programs. The only ones that lose there are our children.

Right Rich. How tiresome..4 months of Obama this Obama that. The difference is Obama is really IS destroying the economic base of this country, while the liberals just destroyed Bush for fun. Nothing has changed in the Middle East, the war is raging on and on and we are now trillions in the hole. Why not start telling the truth now?

He’s between a rock and a hard place. The economy and state tax revenue is falling faster than the last budget cut. There is no tolerance in the state for adding new taxes or raising old ones. Cutting services is very unpopular. Voters think all needed saving can come from waste—meaning services they personally don’t need or like. There aren’t good alternatives. This is not as tough a situation as California, but Ohio has been taking a pounding. Where we go from here will show a lot about how skillful a politician Strickland is.

Strickland talks about attracting new business and technology to Ohio and then proposes devastating cuts to the library system? What kind of backwards thinking is this? Strickland talks out of both sides of his mouth and is a poor example of a public leader.

Strickland’s failure to deliver Ohio to Obama forced Barack to come to Ohio once during the last critical days of the campaign. This failure is unforgivable. Now, Ohio now has a governor who is out of favor with Washington. Lost are federal funds for everything from welfare to road-building to company bailouts (where was the bailout for Ohio bank National City?) We will be better off with a Republican or an Obama “pay-to-player.” Good bye Ted.

His numbers will continue to go down especially if he destroys library funding as he said he plans to. We have obviously elected the wrong man for this job.

How tiresome — all the predictable “what do you expect from a liberal Democrat” shots are starting to pour in. I’d love to know what any Republican could or would have done to avoid/avert further job losses in Ohio. Is there any credible claim that Ohio is an island of depression in an ocean of American prosperity everywhere else?

We need drastic across the board cuts in our state budget to bring it into balance without disastrous tax increases. Doing so will anger voters who want somebody else’s pet programs cut. If Strickland does his job fairly and responsibly, his popularity should fall to nearly zero. Let’s hope he continues going in the right direction.
