Anti-gambling group says Ohio needs a new governor

If Gov. Ted Strickland moves forward with a plan to put video lottery slot machines at Ohio’s seven racetracks, then Ohio needs a new governor, an anti-gambling group said Thursday, June 24.

“I think Ohio needs a new governor. I think he has forfeited his credibility as governor in this state,” said David Zanotti of the Ohio Roundtable and co-chair of the Vote No Casinos Committee.

Since 1990, Ohio voters have defeated four ballot issues proposing casino gaming, including one in 2006 that would have put video lottery slot machines at the racetracks.

“What will the people of Ohio think if this governor over turns the results of four elections and trashes their constitution in the process?” Zanotti said. “At the end of the day this is about the rule of law.”

Strickland had long said he opposed expanding gambling in Ohio, particularly since voters had said no four times. But facing enormous pressure to balance the state’s upcoming two-year operating budget, Strickland switched his position last week. His administration estimates the slots could bring in $933 million to the state coffers over two years.

Zanotti said his group will sue to block the slot machine plan.

“My guess is we’ll tie them up in court long enough that they won’t see a penny of the revenue projections,” Zanotti said.

Zanotti and his group are anti progress, anti-job. We lived in Tucson. There were three casinos. None caused the problems that these anti gambling people say are causeed.

The voters voted down gambling in Ohio four times. Isn’t the Gov. supposed to listen to the will of the people? Gambling encourages people to waste their hard earned money on chances that don’t always give back more than they spent. If government officials would stop spending our taxes on frivolous things for fancy dinners and the extras they think are necessary, the state would be in a better position right now.

Gambling is not the answer, they say the Ohio Lottery gives money to school very little of any goes to that. What do you think slot machines are going to do as well?

This was the right thing to do!Ohio’s economy would be in bigger trouble than it already is without it. This will generate jobs and keep the money that people are gambling anyway, in the state. The past issues that were voted down were voted down because of where the money was going. I voted no on several of those issues simply because of where the money was going, not because I was against bringing expanded gambling to Ohio

He’s right. If everytime someone wants to raise funds, and they override the rule of the people (who have voted!) then we are lost for having an orderly gov’t. Its time someone stand up and say that they’ll cut gov’t instead of riding over the ruling of the people.

Some people just are not getting it! Ohio is taking in a lot less money and existing programs can not be maintained the way they are. Strickland is trying to generate new monies and slots at the tracks is a way.
