Churches look to block slot machine plan
The Ohio Council of Churches and the United Methodist Church plan to ask the Ohio Supreme Court to declare the slot machine proposal as unconstitutional and pressure lawmakers to come up with other ways to raise money to pay for state services.
Lawmakers adopted a $50.5 billion, two-year operating budget on Monday, July 13, that calls for allowing slot machines at Ohio’s seven horse racetracks. The slots are expected to raise $933 million over two years to help pay for K-12 education in Ohio.
The Ohio Council of Churches is expected to hold a press conference Wednesday July 15 at the Statehouse to discuss their opposition campaign.

When a person stands up for something they feel is morally wrong that is their right. In Waynesville,Warren County the Gov. ignores policies and programs already in place to help citizens who qualify my roof is caving in their solution deny me exemptions on property tax, not their home falling to the ground. it just keeps the focus off of one they are sucking the life out of.By james

What would happen if the same 933 million dollars was spent on buying other things, like cars, food, clothes, milk for children wouldn’t that help a dying economy and keep jobs in the state and bring more revenue to Ohio than gambling? Or what happens to the faltering ecomony when 933 million is taken out of the private sector? Sure looks like a worse ecomony than now. Then where is the money going to come from? Just wondering what these people know about ecomonics!By We the people

This church goer is not a hypocrit and I do not shrink back in speaking up at those who might go. this will be much like the lottery most money goes to run it and little in comparison to schools. Perhaps there is a lesson here somewhere.By Rooster

The Ohio Council of Churches consist of a bunch of different churches, which includes Roman Catholic churches. These people are hypocritical, they have these church festivals where they allow gambling and drinking but it is no big deal because the money stays in the church. But if someone else wants to gamble it is a sin. Well my dad has attended the same catholic church for over 30 years, I attended this church until about 5 years ago,and I will tell you first hand they down turn down no money that comes from the race track, my dad races horses at Lebanon raceway and has always gave the church 10% of these winnings. They know where they come from but they sure as hell do not turn it down, but then they turn around and say gamblers are sinners.By mark

Remember: Gambling is immoral…unless it’s done on church grounds. It’s OK if a nun rolls the bones or a priest doubles down! Even Jesus played Texas Hold-em. I read it in the Bible!By what?

When the Ohio Council of Churches holds their press conference, the press should demand they speak to additional budget cuts or new reveue to replace that generated from slots. This time, they must propose solutions rather than just be anti-gambling Perhaps it’s time to take away the nonprofit status of churches and start taxing them!
