$2.3 billion cut to schools possible, Strickland says
Without money from slot machines, Ohio may also lose federal stimulus funding for schools and see a $2.3 billion gaping hole in K-12 funding, the Strickland administration said Tuesday, Sept. 29.
Without special permission from the federal government to shift money around, Ohio may have to cut aid to districts by 10.3 percent in the current school year and 15.74 percent next school year, according to an analysis by the Ohio Department of Education.
The Ohio Supreme Court last week ruled that Gov. Ted Strickland’s plan to put 17,500 slot machines at the state’s seven horse racetracks is subject to a potential referendum. Opponents of the slots plan are preparing to collect 241,366 valid signatures from registered voters by Dec. 20 to put it to voters in November 2010.
Strickland and his top aides are reviewing the court decision and have yet to decide what to do next. And it’s unclear if race track owners would invest millions of dollars in their facilities if voters may cancel it all 13 months from now.
“The governor asked the department of education to provide an impact analysis as part of the ongoing review of the court’s decision. He is committed to doing everything possible, as quickly as possible, to protect primary and secondary education because the future of the state’s economy depends on how well we education Ohioans,” said Strickland press secretary Amanda Wurst.

Lets see if l’ve got this right. We are going to lose 2.3 billion dollars of OUR school tax money if we don’t shift (Shift ?) certain funds (whose tax dollars are those?) Hmmm—- There are hundreds of thousands of the ILLEGAL aliens in the USA. Likely there are thousands upon thousands in Ohio sending their children to OUR schools on our tax money. would’nt it be fairer to send the ILLEGAL Aliens back home. That would clear up most of that 2.3 billion that we need for OUR schools. Note: l am NOT putting down LEGAL Americans, from all over the world, that worked hard to get their Citizenship and learn to speak English, the recognized language of our country. You who entered this country illegaly, get the hell out of our country and let us enjoy what is left of our tax money so we can give a decent education to OUR children.By nullgary

I think cutting funding to schools is horrible. What is worse is all the liberal haters who just spread hate. What a waste of human life with your self righteous attitudes. I know many people who lost their jobs and say one thing while they line up for the childrens health insurance programs but would never want their buddies at church to know they’re using free health care for their kids. The issue with politics in Ohio is simple, its our fault. We keep voting these losers in and wonder why nothing changes. STUPID IN AMERICA. A 20/20 special. If you think this is a good idea, cutting money from out school systems, think again. Our school systems are FAILING. We are on the bottom of the list in education as a country, and as a state we placed 30 in 2008 out of 50 states in education. Stickland, you are voted off the island. You don’t care about our students education, you old man. PUT HIM IN HIS PLACE, AT THE POLLS! I agree with Stacy about the scare tactics & also about the lottery that is suppose to be taking care of the schools. WHERE IS ALL THAT MONEY GOING????? Look at our roads. Here’s an idea, instead of our politians being paid a HUGH SALARY, they should be volunteers. If they weren’t paid they would work harder & think clearer because they wouldn’t be worrying about making more money at helping society. I also feel we have too many slackers on all jobs. I have 2 sons that didn’t go to college & they have worked they way to good paying jobs. I am so proud of them. I also agree that a lot of our politians don’t really know what it is like to hold a real job because they come from weathy families. Money buys a lot. I somewhat agree with the comment about religion, but I feel the person was referring to the Catholic Church when it was mentioned about Bingo. But just look around at all the Church’s we have, pratically one on every corner and yes they aspire to get bigger & bigger, and fancier & fancier, just like the houses that have been built in the last 25 years. Why in the world does a family of 2 or 3 need a home as large as what is being built today. My husband & I raised 3 children in a house of only 1300 Sq.Ft. A cracker box house today. I live in a small subdivision that the biggest house in here is only around 1600 Sq.Ft. Plenty big for a family. The world is getting TO SPOILED & IT HAS GOT TO STOP. Everyone needs to live within there means. They would be more happy & the children would turn out better if everyone had to struggle more.By red

I don’t have answers but lots of questions. What good is a liberal arts degree when you’re flipping burgers @McD’s? And if the schools can’t teach my kids after 9-1/2 months out of the year, why should they go even longer just to increase teacher’s salaries?By Concerned mom

As difficult as it may be, the public sector is going to have to kick its addiction to more and more taxes that it has grown acustomed to during the past 40+ years. The shrunken private sector can no longer support the behemoth and obese federal, state and local sectors. We have regulated and taxed most of our wealth-producing economic engines out of existence or off-shore. Shame on us for allowing politicians, public and private unions and bureaucrats to despoil our once robust economy…By red

Good!!The educational system is out of control! If the government wants to reform something, this would be a good start. Actually I voted against the last school levy because I agree that schools shouldn’t be funded through property taxes. Calling people indigenous to the Americas “illegal aliens” isn’t really fair since the Europeans were the original invaders. Also since most of Texas was Mexico before they moved the border, many undocumented workers have a valid claim to live here. Regardless, the reality is these folks aren’t going anywhere so the sooner they are given a path to citizenship the sooner they can pay more taxes (they already pay sales tax), get driver’s licenses and join in paying for universal health care. You and Lou Dobbs might think freeloaders born here are better than hard working immigrants just because they’re called “citizens,” but I don’t.By WAR

If you’re here in this country and you work hard and stay out of trouble I don’t care if the government calls you a citizen or not. Everyone has the right to affordable education and health care and housing no matter who they are. The problem with the schools isn’t too many students, it’s the funding mechanism. I don’t really see calling congress to complain about Mexicans a “solution.” But to your credit mr. war, at least you weren’t arguing about what constitutes liberal arts.By dwm

@Jerry, the liberals are usually over educated idiots who can do nothing but sit in class through their twenties. The rarely work, party hardy, are great at video games and become educators, especially at the college level. Traditionalists, who are from all walks of life, are the workers and doers. They own the businesses, employee their neighbors pay the bulk of taxes and know how to save a buck. I find it funny not many government officials have ever really held a “real” job, especially in Ohio and that goes for Repubs and Dems. My God..when is America going to wake up? This is not a Strickland problem, not a republican problem, this is America’s problem. And that is being perpetuated quickly down hill by the idiot that sits in the White House. This man is not a friend to the American people. He admits he’s muslim, and who wants this country dead more than they do? He’s taking from the rich to give to the poor, raising taxes on corporations, which will be passed to the middle class. He wants and is working diligently toward a 2 class society. Read history, and read from the founding fathers…government spending, esp debt spending, is death. Sooner or later there will be massive inflation rates for all this debt spending…which is doing nothing except running up enormous deficits..there are no free rides. I can’t believe our state budget came down to a make-or-break situation based on slot machines. Every layer of government involved in a service adds, best case, 10-20% to the cost of providing that service. The D’s and R’s are all out for re-election, and none will do what is needed. In the short term they need to revoke half of the 21% state income tax that Bob Taft enacted and use this to maintain the schools. In the longterm they need a complete overhaul of Ohio’s tax code that places the state fifth highest in America and which stops most business growth. We are behind California, Oregon, New Jersey, and New York in high taxes. We need a complete and total overhaul, but no politicians have the courage to do it.By dale1

Jim - read what papers the liberal sponsored media papers. Of course all the liberal papers say the bailouts worked. The bank bailouts didn’t even buy back the bad debt and haven’t worked. I just heard that most of the money will not be paid back. I guess if you are talking getting back a fraction of the money then it worked. Bottom line is Obama misspent the money. BTW, I heard this on ABC so don’t blame FoxNews. I heard this crisis will happen again because the bad debt is still on the bank’s books. The stock market hasn’t changed much in 3 months. Like a majority of americans I base the economy on jobs not the stock market. Where are all the jobs the stimulus was supposed to create and dont’ give me the bull that many more jobs would have been lost there is no proof to back that statement up. Ah yes, Obama wants mothers to return to college and will give them money to do so BUT if we don’t place the #(# slot machines in the racetracks it is going to cost Ohio’s kids education! Good night! Foreign countries are already light years ahead of a lot of US kids. Lets help this country not continue to beat it down.By painfultruth

The right and left hand doesn’t know what it is doing. Obama wants to keep the kids in school longer and Gov. Strickland wants to cut funding for their education. What a joke!!!!By ReelHelp

They should offer incentives for movie productions here in Ohio. It would provide income from temp jobs for xtras and help businesses. Plus, if we excel at it, we could become a more permanent location for filming.By Advisor
