Sen. Brown leads effort to include “public option” in health plan

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, on Thursday, Oct. 8, led 30 Senate Democrats in signing a letter to Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., urging that a public option be included in any health reform legislation that reaches the Senate floor.

“In too many parts of the country, one or two insurance companies control the majority of the market,” Brown said in a press release. “That isn’t good for consumers, businesses or taxpayers. As we finalize health reform legislation, we shouldn’t forget that a majority of Americans, doctors and members of Congress support a public option.”

The letter says that “absent a competitive and continuous public insurance option - health reform legislation will not produce nationwide access and ongoing cost containment.”

wealth-envy? the last time i checked the economy was laid to waste, bankrupting and unemploying (erego “raping”) the middle class. unless you are in the top ten percent of the population in terms of “wealth”, the republican party does not represent you. we need to stabilize the economy with infrastructure, including healthcare. most people understand this now. so you think people are going to get “rich” off of basic healthcare and social security checks? people once thought weekends and decent/safe working conditions were too much to ask. lead, follow, or get out of the way.

There is something about the whining associated with wealth envy which runs contrary to the spirit of the American dream.

Leslie, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone so brainwashed and misinformed about the facts of health care reform. Nobody has proposed eliminating private insurance companies. A public option is needed to keep the insurance companies honest. Leslie, if you really think these billion dollars insurance companies have your best interests at heart, I have some land in Florida for sale; very cheap.. I, for one, really like Mr. Brown. I believe him to be a person of integrity who has the interest of the people first. The Republicans are nothing more than front men for the insurance lobby, and big business, who care for nothing for middle America. The Republican MO is fear mongering and obstructionism to protect corporate interests. I’m tired of the middle class getting raped while CEO’s make 40 million a year.

Interesting that Leslie says, “Mr. Brown you like the public option so much then we can assume you will give up your private insurance and you and your family will join the public option as well. Mr. Brown you need to be given your pink slip for not doing your job.” In what I would consider a testament to the quality of his character, Senator Brown (as a Congressman & Senator) has not accepted his taxpayer funded health care in a vow not to do so until all Americans receive the same benefits that he would be eligible to receive as a United States Senator. So, I imagine he’ll take you up on your request, Leslie!

Mr. Brown you like the public option so much then we can assume you will give up your private insurance and you and your family will join the public option as well. Mr. Brown you need to be given your pink slip for not doing your job. You are suppose to work for the people and listen to the people and come up with real solutions. You are not a king or a prince you are a man no different than the rest of us. You have no constitutional right to dictate. We are a wealthy nation because of our liberties. If our founders had not created the government they did, respecting individual liberties, then we would be like the rest of the world and not considered the wealthiest nation. It is our freedom as to why people come here. It is not because the land here is any better than anywhere else. It is because of who we are, what we believe in that has allowed us to become the great nation we are.

Anytime the Government gets involved several things happen. 1) They create a new Department with lots of people. These people get good insurance and pay. 2) they create another watchdog agency, they too get insurance and pay. They grow Government. Recent examples of Government in action SSAA, Medicare, US Postal Service. All of these are money pits. We keep increasing the cost without any efficiencies in operation. Just what we need Senator brown, you supporting bigger government. Why not better Government? You don’t care you have best Medical Plan in world as well as big pension for life after your one term in office.

Mother Necessity, lets not confuse terms. Healthcare a service provided for a patient by a doctor or other health professional. Health care insurance a vehicle for remuneration of services. The national debate can be reduced to the simple question,”Who Pays the bill?” Do we want universal socialized medicine? Or, at the other end,do we allow the medical industry to operated in a free-market economy? At present, we are between the two. Which is more efficient? Which best addresses the desires of the nation as a whole? Economics studies the allocation of scarce resources with alternative uses. The efficient use of our resources benefits our society and increases our standard of living. Who pays “the bill” in a more efficient way, the government or the individual.

You can keep the healthcare you have under this plan. I have a good healthcare plan from a private company, but it is getting more expensive and will continue to do so. You don’t get to complain about Medicare under the Bush administration. Mad King George is gone, and the days of predatorial/abusive corporate practices soon will be too. Finally, no one wants to “control” you more than the big conglomerates. They have been in congressional pockets for too long. Haven’t they made enough money? We need the accountability and access that is provided to everyone, even me, under comprehensive healthcare reform. The old fashioned healthcare arcade game is over.

“In too many parts of the country, one or two insurance companies control the majority of the market,” Brown said. Why is that Mr. Brown? It is because of government, federal and state laws. You politicians created these restrictions so remove the restrictions. Obama said we could have the same health care as Congress. Congress is not on a public option. Congress has access to all of the private insurance companies. They get to pick and choose want is in their plan. Nothing is mandated to Congress. Medicare denied more claims in 2008 than the insurance companies. Mr. Brown we the people are not stupid you are not fooling us. Your public option is about controlling the people it has nothing to do with our health. Mr. Brown if you and your cronies pass this health nightmare on us and we have to have government health care then all of you had better be ready to be on government health care too, because you cannot have private health if we cannot. You see we pay your salaries - you work for us.

Then why write a comment? What is your point, exactly? Are you against healthcare for everyone? Children? The elderly? The family whose provider(s) lost his/her job? The mentally ill? The homeless? Students? Small business employees? Or should we do the responsible and economical thing and plan for these realities in the first place?

Sherrod Brown comes from a working class district, and those people know what he is talking about. They appreciate good jobs. Bush did absolutely nothing to provide anyone with a good job except defense contractors and oil companies. He made it illegal for medicare to bargain with drug companies for lower prices. How’s that working for you? Illegal immigrants have nothing to do with this: get a grip on reality. I do like the idea of requiring everyone to have basic health insurance. I think that will cause competition for lower prices, as there will obviously be a huge market for basic insurance that individuals can afford. This could be supplemented by the government as needed. You are already paying billions for uninsured healthcare. If Jesus were here, he would heal the sick. Again. Since you didn’t get the point the first time. Universal healthcare is the right thing to do, and the tasty way to do it.

There is a 30+ billion dollar medicaid liability that this plan gives to the states.Nevada has an exemption. The citizens of Ohio would be better served by someone who has the clout and political will to protect our interests.

The public option is a takeover of the health care system by the federal government. This ‘system’ will have the same fiscal responsibility as social security, medicare, the postal service, etc. To actually help the American people, congress should enact meaningful change in the form of expanding the health savings account (HSA) program, tort reform, and eliminating state barriers to health insurance availability.

One reason the public option is such a big deal to the Dems is that it is a back door way to cover illegal aliens. Its another political shell game. There is wording excluding illegals from both the house and Senate version; but, that wording has already been declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in in Plyer vs Doe (1982). They ruled that in the area of social services, whatever benefits the government makes available to the general public cannot be kept away from a class of persons based on their immigration status or that of their parents. There is no question that under the present law, Congress simply cannot pick and choose which “persons” to whom it will afford social benefits and to which “persons” it will not. The public option would be a benefit of the government; thus, it must be offered to all “persons”. Should this bill pass, this clause would be contested and in all likelihood declared unconstitutional. The Dems then could have it both ways, saying they tried while at the same time knowing all along that the public option would be required to be offered to all “persons”.

way to go Senator Brown. Conservatives need to admit that the last eight years of conservative rule have severley damaged this country. That is why the American people have rejected them in the last 2 elections. They need to go home and lead a quite life. Health care reform is what the american people voted for overwelmingly in the last election. enough said !

It’s easy to be against health care reform when you have decent health care. I wonder how many of the people who are against reform have had to pay for their own health care. Try shelling out $1200-$1600/month to cover two people! We need reform and we need a public option - and yes, you may raise my taxes.

Brwon is a guy who has never had a position which depends on competion and making something go in the public sector. Competition could be enhanced if they eliminated state boundries and allow the 1300 or so healthcare providers to sell across state lines; but, Brown worships at the feet of government so it is of no surprise that he would be so adament for the public option. Why is he so insistent? It hasn’t got a darn thing at all to do with competition - he wants to put the vehicle in place for government to take over the healthcare industry.
