Rep. Turner, Mayor-elect Leitzell to discuss “ideas to move Dayton forward”

U.S. Rep. Mike Turner, R-Centerville, and Dayton Mayor-elect Gary Leitzell will meet on Monday, Nov. 30, at Turner’s Dayton office “to discuss ideas to move Dayton forward,” according to a press release from Turner’s office.

The meeting will be followed by a press availability at 2:45 p.m., the release said.

Turner is a former Dayton mayor who lost that office to Democrat Rhine McLin in 2001. Leitzell defeated McLin on Nov. 3 to win the mayor’s office.

Cash Making Opportunities - The Beginning The working life is already tough enough, but the worries of being out of work was even tougher. The unsecured working environment have prompted me to search the internet for an alternative source of extra income so that I could learn how to Make Money Work for me and be Financially Independent. Turner left debt? Look it up. He was the first and last fiscally sound leader in a long time. Certainly, didn’t have the budgetary issues that both Mclin and Leonard had. Likely due to curbing union control over the city’s finances. Glad to hear they met. Hopefully, good ideas were exchanged.

I think this new Mayor has a lot to learn about being Mayor of Daytyon. He only has 1 vote and he can’t do jack by himself. The one thing he has to look forward to is when there is a ribbon to be cut (and there won’t be many) he gets to stand in the middle has he has the first cut.

The Blind leading the Blind…Turner sucked as Mayor…worse as Congressman…Maybe he can teach him how to get campaign money from the health care industry like he and boehner do

Hey Greg, Mike Turner did not push for the establishment of the Dayton Dragons franchise. He fought it tooth & nail and only jumped on board when it became a done deal. Like him or not, Tony Capizzi brought baseball to Dayton. Do the research.

Henry - Yes it has happened! Of course that wasn’t the reason given - the old City Manager sent all his lackies on a witch hunt until the smallest of infractions can be used to fire the employee. There is no such thing as an open door policy in the COD just one of the MANY things wrong with the organization. We’re hoping Leitzell can mend communication lines and open doors - perhaps the free movement of information can help solve some of the real issues.

Dumb & dumbest to meet that’s great. Mayor Turner has followed the Peter Principle steps perfectly. The meeting is nothing but a pay back for McLin beating him and will accomplish nothing! Good luck Dayton!

“Any City employee caught visiting or talking to the Mayor or a Commissioner is almost instantly fired” — Abolutely false, what an outrageous and riduculous thing to say.

open your eyes and jim from Dayton are spot on. One or the other must take place to turn Dayton around. We must stop living in the past and 1913 is a long time ago. It is obviously not working.

the new guy is a good step in the right direction, now if only we can get rid of some of the McHat like councilmen and replace them w/ people that have a clue.

Turner… the man who moved out of Dayton the second he was elected congressman. And by the way left us with the huge debt Mayor McLin had to clean up. Loser.

Rewrite the Charter. Empower the office of mayor. Elect city commissioners by city district vice city-wide (as is done currently). Dayton has to move beyond 1913 and the long shadow of John Patterson!

Unfortunately, USMC Vietnam, you are correct. We have a large demographic of people who are poorly educated and drug/alcohol addicted. The Behr plant has complained about Dayton’s low-quality work force.

Getting rid of Rhine and Rashad are both good for Dayton. What most don’t realize is the City Manager runs the show. 95% of what goes on in the city departments never reaches the Commission or Mayor office - they may share the same floor in City Hall but the communication is ZERO. Any City employee caught visiting or talking to the Mayor or a Commissioner is almost instantly fired - regardless of the topic. The only person approved to talk to the Commission or Mayor is the City Manager - period end of discussion. The “Truth” never reaches those who vote… never! It is great that Turner and Leitzell are talking perhaps Mike can tell Gary how to keep the communication lines open from the Manager’s office!

What Dayton needs is an educated workforce, that will WORK. The ghetto doesn’t cut it.

Keep in mind, as mayor, Gary does not have unlimited power. We still have the four other’s left over from the old school to contend with and they are more beholding to the Democratic party than the well being of the city.

I am glad he is getting advice from Mike Turner. He was the best thing to happen to Dayton for a long time. Dayton and the surrounding area biggest need is JOBS. We need Manufacturing and I am not just talking about old Manufacturing there are a lot the could be here in the Aerospace and Medical Manufacturing. I say give all buisness a 0% tax break that set up shop in Dayton (Moraine even) New and Old!!!

The more I read about Leitzell & his constant studying on how to improve Dayton the more I feel confident that we may be able to pull Dayton out of this downturn. I voted for him & I’m glad he’s taking the job seriously. Go Gary Go

I hear that Columbus is rejection the Casino legislation. Can Turner and Litzel offer Dayton as an alternative city for the Casino and would Dayton residents be okay with a casino being built here?

Hope they realize that to save Dayton, and return it to a business-friendly environment, they’re going to have to cut city spending( whole depts & many jobs/ back to prioritites)& advertise the low cost of business nationally instead of locally at UD Arena. The outflow of business could be reversed and we could attract new ones if we’d quit the current course, and bill ourselves as a value site and not old, industrial city constantly looking for State / Federal help to tear itself down.

Greg, you are spot on. I am moving back to Dayton after graduating college in the next month or so. I have looked at luxury apartments downtown, but simple things like grocery stores may be a sticking point.

The future of Dayton begins and ends with the city’s ability to attract young professionals downtown and to its surrounding neighborhoods. Mike Turner was on the right path when he pushed for the establishment of the Dayton Dragons franchise and pushed for more business-friendly policies, but I hope the mayor-elect will remember that drawing suburbanites into the city center doesn’t equate with a vital, thriving, forward-thinking city. Dayton needs residents first and foremost, and plans as simple as bringing a grocery store to the downtown area would go a long way toward highlighting the city’s commitment to a more promising future.

Streetcars are perfect for the city of Dayton! Dayton use to have the streetcars untill General Motors decided they should be taken up! Watch the documentary , Taken for a ride , you can google this and watch for the internet it explains how are cites were robbed of this vital transportation system!

Turner was a pretty decent mayor, and it’s too bad that McHat didn’t take notice of the good things he did.Karon-read up, honey. Rail has been in the works for quite sometime now .Streetcars would be a waste of $$, and would not cover enough miles.

Karon, Streetcars are very expensive to operate and maintain. They are also impractical for Dayton Street Plans. One last point passenger rail is already being discussed and not up to cities but the State of Ohio, Dayton is already in the final plan.

It’s good that Congressman Turner is going to meet with the Mayor Elect, so he can talk to Leitzell about how difficult being the Mayor is going to be. Also that Mayor Elect Leitzell is only one vote on the city commission and that the Dayton has a stronger city manager form of government. That form of government was reapproved under Turners watch.
