Insurance coverage for diabetes, autism approved in House votes
The Ohio House on Tuesday, Dec. 8, approved separate bills requiring health insurance companies to provide coverage for diabetes and autism.
House Bill 81, approved 58-38, would require that coverage be provided for diabetes equipment, supplies, medication, diabetes medical nutritional therapy and self-management education.
House Bill 8, approved 57-39, would prohibit insurers from excluding coverage for specified autism services for individuals diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder.
Supporters sitting in the House gallery expressed thanks after the votes.
“It’s huge,” said Doug Krinsky of Westerville, a Columbus suburb, who has an autistic son.
Opponents, however, said the bills would increase costs to businesses during an economic downturn.
“The Ohio House of Representatives today approved two measures that guarantee higher health insurance premiums for small businesses that could not have come at a worse time, as most small businesses are already coping with double-digit annual increases in health care costs and the worst economic conditions in recent memory,” Roger R. Geiger, vice president/state executive director for the National Federation of Independent Business/Ohio, said in an e-mail.

Both bills now go to the Senate.

With Facebook and Twitter being among the leaders of the Social networks, marketing as a small business is being transformed.. Respondents according to the Vertical Response survey appear to need some differentiation with the use of SE marketing and Social media Marketing www.onlineuniversalwork.com

It sounds like “John” listens to Michael Savage on WHIO, because that page was yanked right out of his playbook. My daughter has PDD/NOS, a form of Autism. Imagine having a child who can’t hug you or be hugged, who won’t allow themselves to be held.

our legislators have no answer for any issue but to increase taxes (this is a backdoor tax on all private health plans. how pathetic. why does autism get preference? why not mandate that health insurance cover every other terrible disease?

Autism is very real. Only the uneducated bufoon would say otherwise. I am not Liberal, nor a Dem, but my son DOES have Autism as do many others. Actually many studies are showing even Albert Einstein had it. So, you wanna say it not real, go jump off a bridge and do the world a favor. I really hope you haven’t had the chance to breed…

Tina, I don’t know if you can afford it or not but pharmacies have a kit that you can do your A1c at home and it only takes about 5-10 minutes. My doctor accepts that maybe your doctor will to. It is called A1c test and Walmart has them for about 10 dollars. I hope this helps you. D

i’ve been diabetic for over 15 years, i’m not overweight, and i’ve tried to control this disease with diet and exersize, even lost 40 lbs, but still had to have medication to help control my glucose levels. I’m not able to have the necessary blood work done because i don’t have $2000.00 to give to my insurance company for my yearly deductible, anytime i have to go to a hospital, i have to pay out of pocket for the costs, so when my doctor wants my blood glucose levels checked, (A1C test), i can’t do it. and for my test strips for my glucometer comes out of a $25.00 copay per month, that’s only for 100 strips, so that limits me on how many times i need to check my glucose levels, can’t afford it, therfore, i don’t do it. i did not ask for this disease, i do my best to control it, it’s just too expensive to even try.

It’s about time! Imagine having a child who desperately needs therapy but you have an insurance company tell you that they “don’t cover Autism”. Therapy is very expensive. You have families who have had to quit there jobs or cut back on hours just so they would qualify for help from the government so their child could get the therapy they so desperately need!

To Uncle Andy> Should we not cover smokers? Insuring smokers results in higher premiums for non-smokers. Oh wait, Congressman Boehner is a smoker and gets Big Insurance and Big Tobacco money for campaigns and golf outings.

We need to make insurance companies pay for all the tests they want the doctors to order for their patients. By the time you pay the deductables and the co-pays the oridnary person cannot afford to have testing done. They also need to make them pay for treatments, ect their doctors deem necessary and stop all the automatic denials with numerous appeals to get things paid for. A universal billing code would help as well.

Umm, autism wasn’t running rampant before… And this has NOTHING to do with Obama. I’m a Republican, and I have a child with autism. This coverage is NEEDED.

Jow can the National Socialists who love Fuehrer Barry Obama enact these laws but still claim premiums won’t go up? If you force an insurance company to cover what it did not cover before, it will increase the costs of doing business. Those costs are then passed along to consumers. Why can’t Obama lovers see this?
