Lehner pushing bill to give seniors care at home
State Rep. Peggy Lehner, R-Kettering, is pushing legislation that would expand services for Medicaid-eligible Ohioans who want to live at home, instead of moving to a nursing home.
The bill would also allow people already in nursing homes who want to be cared for at home to bypass wait lists for such in-home services.
Lehner said the program would be more cost effective for taxpayers since it costs $60,000 a year to house someone in a nursing home versus $20,000 a year to provide in-home services.

In home care would not be right for everyone, like Andy’s relative, but it would be a wonderful option for many. that’s what health care should be about: choices. Listen up US Senate!

Peggy This sounds like a very good idea. Thank you and don’t stop here—I suspect there are many sensible ways to cut health care costs and reduce red tape at the same time

Whether it’s the elderly or the disabled, not all of those that can remain in their home need 24/7 care… thus the savings. If you sign up for the Ohio Home Care Program (Waiver), you are also eligible for “adaptive devices” and “home modifications” that the State does not necessarily advertise. For instance, the following web site describes how eligible recipients can fight for a whole-house generator: www.kevin67.net

I may be mixing apploes and oranges. Someone explain to me how the $20K calculation was derived. I hired home caregivers for my mother at $9.50/hr. Work them 24/7 for 365 days. It was more affordable to go to assisted living.

This is a noble and good fight. Shame on the Nursing Home industry for fiery resistance. May the Industry rise above the greed that has characterized their past and join Representative Lehner in this caring change in the law.

Thank you Rep. Lehner. It is great to have someone to really care about their voters and their needs.
