Congressman Turner criticizes Obama Administration on plan to move Gitmo prisoners

U.S. Rep. Mike Turner, R-Centerville, issued a statement today, Dec. 16, asking the Obama Administration to present a detailed plan to Congress on the cost to modify the Thomson Correctional Center in Thomson, Ill., to house prisoners from Guantanamo Bay.

“While our nation’s unemployment hovers at 10 percent and the conflict in Afghanistan continues to escalate, the administration will spend more than half a billion dollars transforming the Illinois facility into GITMO North, all while making our nation less safe,” Turner said.

Turner is a senior member of the House Armed Services Committee.

According to a recent Gallup poll, nearly two-thirds of Americans are against closing the Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba and moving terrorist suspects to the U.S.

During a briefing this morning, officials from the Departments of Defense and Justice estimated the cost to modify the Illinois prison into a detention facility exceeding supermax standards will total $450 million.

“The administration needs to come before Congress and present a comprehensive operation plan for the Thomson facility and explain this $500 million cost before bringing these terror suspects on American soil,” Turner said.

I don’t see how these men, kept in maximum security prison, will be any more dangerous than our homegrown rapists, gang members, murderers, etc.

Close GITMO, ship the current GITMO residents to federal prisons across the USA. Warn the local citizens so they may arm themselves. Next time, just kill the prisoner on the battle field, take no prisoners, and we will not have a “GITMO problem”.

@ Barb and Jane, are you two really that stupid? Turner is a senior member of the Armed Services Commitee, you know the one that deals with the armed servides (that is the military for you idiots posting on here). Turner’s comments deal with a military base in Gitmo, thus he should speak on that. Turner is not, as far as I know, on the Health & Human Services Committee. As such He probably will not speak much on healthcare reform and leave it to the members of that committee. Turner speaks about what he know, he doesn’t go around making stupid comments about topics he does not have a direct hand in, unlike most liberals who think that they are experts on everything. I think Turner is an excellent Rep. He was a great mayor too, oh well, Dayton’s loss is the region’s gain!

Put them on Alcatraz with hidden cameras and no guards. We’ll sell it to the networks and call it “Survivor Jihad”.

The checks and balances of government is no more. Obama does what he wants, regardless of what the people or Congress expect. We are now in the age of dictatorship.

In all of the comments posted so far no one has provided a single reason why we shouldn’t expect the Administration to submit a plan on what this will cost the taxpayer.  This blind trust in Obama is absurd

But he was okay with the $300 million upgrade package for Camp X-ray at Guantanamo (to turn it into expanded Camp Delta) that the prior administration paid to Halliburton? Or will he be okay with the Illinois facility if Halliburton gets this contract, too?

The Administration is willing to say and do anything in the name of “job creation” - even if the “creation” of these jobs actually costs taxpayers more in the long run.

Rep. Turner has offered ideas on health care.  Have you bothered to look at his website?  The last time I checked he isn’t the one taking healthcare down.  Democrats need only look within their own ranks for that!

I find it amazing that we can house the 20th hijacker Moussaoui, Sheik Mohammed, the original twin towers bomber and the shoe bomber in federal prison, but the gitmo detainees, many of whom have committed no crimes are so scary. Give me a break. How about some healthcare reform, Mr. Turner? He’s too much of a coward to have an opinion on that, but a non-issue certainly gets press coverage.

I know, Barb, I feel your pain too. He doesn’t care. There has been absolutely nothing constructive out of him regarding health care. He sticks to periphery issues because they are safer. I have never seen him take a stand on anything that is the hot issue of the moment. He talks about bankruptcies while everyone else is invested in healthcare. He talks about everything but the actual current debates. Then he can look like he’s doing something when he doesn’t actually address the issues affecting people at the moment.

You know I have a much bigger problem right now and that is paying my cobra premium of $1549.38 and making my rent payment. Please talk about issues here in Ohio that are a problem for us. Maybe Turner is just mad he couldn’t bring the prisoners and the resulting jobs it creates here. I used to like Mike Turner but he is just useless anymore.

RE: By vrc December 16, 2009 11:19 PM “By keeping those prisoners in Cuba, the US military does not have to follow US Judicial laws. The minute you bring them in the country, you are going to have attorneys lining up to get them out of prison.” Everyone here needs to get their facts straight..These people are enemy combatants, NOT US citizens. They do NOT have to be treated as such, period. Go read the Geneva Conventions you F-ing idiots. These folk would be glad to slit your throat, but you all are too stupid to understand that or any other fact that has been presented. F-ing morons!

When Turner gets to be president, then people will pay attention to what he says. He’s not nearly as important as John Boner.

I fear the desire to put down the conservatives leads some to support and defend liberal ideas regardless of whether they are needed. Do folks putting down Mr Turner’s actions really, truly care that much about the cause of the Gitmo prisoners, and their rights. I hope the detainees all rot to nothing wherever they are jailed.

No, he doesn’t have any better solutions. The cost of maintaining gitmo is extraordinary. Water must be shipped into the facility. Our troops, doctors and other support personnel are doing crazy rotations to keep this prison going. Clearly he has given no thought to these issues. Not exactly a suprise.

At least three comprehensive GOP bills have been introduced: one by Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, Sen. Richard Burr of North Carolina and Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin; another by Rep. Tom Price of Georgia and a third by Rep. John Shadegg of Arizona. Republicans, especially in the House, have been shunned by committee chairs and Democratic leaders who simply refuse to accept GOP amendments to health care bills, even when those amendments align with the President’s stated goals for health care reform. So I ask you, which party is killing bipartisanship?

JP, while in another country, Gitmo is on American territory. Ironmyke, the Gitmo “fiasco ” was a figment of the press’ imagination. When Democrat politicians visited first hand, they could find nothing wrong going on.

Turner and the rest of the Republicans in Congress are against Obama and the Democrats including their policies. The Republican party is the party of “no” to Obama’s policies. The Republican party are saying no to health care reform and everything else. I would like to hear what their ideas are.

The Gitmo fiasco was another mess created by the illegal and immoral actions of leadership of Mr. Turner’s party. Common decency requires Gitmo to close. Does he have any better solutions?

After seeing pictures of the Thomson facility, I don’t see where it needs a half a billion in renovations. Additionally, this will provide around 3000 jobs for their local economy. Gitmo needs to be closed.
