Sen. Brown, Rep. Boehner duel on health care breakthrough
U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown and House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-West Chester, didn’t exactly agree on the big breakthrough in health care overhaul on Saturday, Dec. 19.
Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Nebraska, became the critical 60th vote to support passage of health care overhaul and a Senate vote could come by Christmas Eve.
Brown praised the development while Boehner blasted the Democratic-backed health care plan, a key part of President Barack Obama’s domestic agenda.
“This bill is an important step toward strengthening Ohio’s middle class families. When it comes to health insurance, this bill would help those with insurance, those without, and those who fear they won’t have coverage tomorrow,” Brown said in a press release.
“It would immediately reduce insurance premiums for small businesses and over time would reduce the $1000 hidden tax that every family with insurance now pays to make up for uncompensated care provided to those without insurance.”
“This legislation cracks down on insurance practices worthy of Ebenezer Scrooge …..”
Boehner’s press release had a different tone:
“The American people have rejected the Democrats’; government-run approach to health care loudly and clearly, and it’s time to scrap Senator Reid’s bill and start over.
“The bill will fundamentally change something as personal and important as the relationship between a patient and a doctor, and yet Democrats are attempting to sneak the bill through before Christmas in the hopes the American people aren’t watching what they’re doing.
“…Now is the time to speak out, more loudly and clearly than ever, against this monstrosity.”

Jim - You sound like that crazy rep from FL who says Republicans just want us to die. If anyone is for “big business”, then it’s Obama: he cut a deal with Big Pharma, and after promises of “no lobbyists” his admin is full of Big Business lobbyists. Democrats and Republicans alike are beholden to deep pockets, and I believe you’ll find that there are more Democrat millionaires than Republican ones. One thing is certain, Republicans are for Big Liberty, and this reform package severely restricts our freedoms. BTW, Moe is one of your left-wing plants, purposely spelling like that to convey a false impression. Wise up.

Moe, Did you learn to spell from Larry or Curly? Demicrate? Didn’t the little red line come on? I’d love to hear your definition of socialism too. And MnM, I happen to agree with you, that this bill falls short of the reforms that are needed. You make some good points. But let’s be honest, the Republicans are never going get it done because they support big business. And the Dems are too weak to stand up. Lieberman, Connecticut, and AIG is the perfect example of why we can’t get anything done.

This bill will bankrupt the country if Obama hasn’t done so already. Sherrod Brown is counting on a $500 billion dollar cut in Medicare and a $240 billion dollar “Doctor Fix”. Obama and Sherrod are liars! If you believe the spineless Democrats are actually going to make those cuts; I have a General Motors plant I will sell you.

Jim - it’s obvious you either just read left-wing talking points or your first statement is a cop-out, avoiding the facts that the health “care” reform is not about care but about control. There’s plenty of finger-pointing that can be done 2 or 3 different ways, but the current bills (from both houses) do not do anything for real reform.

Aker, It really doesn’t matter to the Republicans what’s in the bill, because they are going to oppose anything and everything that helps the consumer, and regulates big insurance. You do realize that the senate bill and the house bill have to go conference, right? There’s so much misinformation on here that the DDN should do an article that explains the basic tenants of these bills and how the process works. Of course, then people would actually have to read, which doesn’t happen much.

Oh yeah you keep on blaming for Bush for everything he is been out of the White House for what a Year now,and I think part of the blame can be put on Obama now. You can’t spend your way out of the recession, and keep on borrowing money from China, you have to pay down the national debt, the states can’t afford the health care bill,it would make all the state go bankrupt. Oh yeah what about Obama’s plan to stop earmark’s in the plan, sorry for him he is a f**king liar.

So Ohio’s tax$$ will pay for Nebraska’s permanent increase in Medicaid, along with paying for the goodies VT, LA, FL, CT got in the bill. If Senator Brown did such a good thing, then how come he didn’t bring home the goodies for Ohio? What, Ohio is so rich we can pay for other state’s new health care?

Yes, we do need health care reform. But what got passed undercover of darkness in the Senate is not about “care” but about “control”. To think otherwise is to be ignorant of what is in the bill. And it raises taxes on nearly everyone, not “the rich” … do you use a Flexible Spending Account? Guess what, you won’t be able to use it for OTC after the bill passes. That’s a tax increase, and there’s lots more in the language.

Aker, The only people who will be paying higher taxes are those making 250k or more a year. It’s the Republicans who don’t care about the American people. Almost a trillion in unfunded Tax cuts for the very wealthy. No bid contracts increased 129% from 2002 to 2008. Deficit DOUBLED under Bush. They had eight years and made no attempt at any health care reform. You’re not living in the real world if you don’t think we need health care reform. Apparently the 400 million the insurance lobby spent in propaganda worked on you.

The American public can’t afford it because we don’t have jobs. The democrats don’t care about the interests of the American people at all. Did you not know this health care bill has earmarks in it,so that the health care bill will be passed. The only thing this plan is going to do is bankrupt the state’s and federal government. The American have said we don’t want it.

What did you think Ben Nelson was holding out for? Ever hear of the Hyde Amendment? And secondly, The Insurance lobby spent 400 million on propaganda to defeat this bill. Looks like it worked on you. The 10 Commandments - God’s Revelation in the Old Testament The 10 Commandments are found in the Bible’s Old Testament at Exodus, Chapter 20. They were given directly by God to the people of Israel at Mount Sinai after He had delivered them from slavery in Egypt: “And God spoke all these words, saying: ‘I am the LORD your God… ONE: ‘You shall have no other gods before Me.’ TWO: ‘You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.’ THREE: ‘You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.’ FOUR: ‘Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.’ FIVE: ‘Honor your father and your mother.’ SIX: ‘You shall not murder.’ SEVEN: ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ EIGHT: ‘You shall not steal.’ NINE: ‘You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.’ TEN: ‘You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.’ How can they reconcile compelling us to purchase this and not violate the tenth commandment? How can they justify paying for abortion and not violate the sixth commandment? How can they continue to lie to us and not violate the ninth commandment? They may just pay the ultimate price.

Health care for all of our fellow citizens is just the Christian thing to do. I’m blessed to have a good job with good health care, but these insurance companies have gotten away with the crimes of making their costs impossible for many to afford for too long. If hard working Americans , that recieve no health care have their tax dollars going to pay for Congressmen to have great government health care, then Congress should make sure these citizens have health care as well.

Care more about the American people than another big business. So many hard working Americans have lost their jobs, and many with jobs still can’t have health care because Republicans have always cared more about big business than working class Americans. If this plan is so good why does a couple of states get it better that others. This bill is suppose to make fair, doesn’t appear that way. If this bill so great shouldn’t the government employees including the president, congress and senate have to go on it? What they don’t admit to is buying the vote of the “takers” - those people (liberals) who are likely undereducated or dropouts, past or present drug users, past or present drinkers, smokers and other types who abuse their bodies, they are unemployed or underemployed, have had children out of wedlock and generally want you and I to take care of them and provide for them for the rest of their little miserable lives. I have no compassion for them - die and die early - clear the genepool of your self centered “its all about my wants and needs” attitude. PAY YOUR OWN WAY THRU LIFE. I don’t care if you have made many poor life choices - go out and get three jobs and support yourself. Don’t procreate and spread your sorry-a*s DNA. Single Payer would end it but will never be passed. Boehner and the GOP, what a surprise, they say NO and propose NOTHING; yep that is a party worthy of votes, did nothing but start wars and huge spending for eight years, then act like they are for smaller gov. and controls on spending. Only time they want controls on spending is when they are not the ones spending. These hypocrites’ would be a lot more believable if anyone of them had said a word in the last eight years instead of having a 100% voting record following GWB and his warmongering and spending free for all. Now that someone is trying to spend tax money on the American people, they are all up in arms about it. Throwaway money on Halliburton and rebuilding two countries we unsuccessfully occupy that is not a problem for the party of NO.

Jim - sometimes doing nothing is the best option. At least the impact should be considered more carefully. The statements about this bill that say middle-class taxes won’t be raised, that health care premiums will not rise, that people can keep their current insurance plan, and that the budget deficit will be reduced, need to stop because they are all untrue. But if you think this is good thing then by all means keep on truckin’. Peace.

JJ, Yes, I’m bothered by several of the points you make. But what’s the alternative? Status Quo? Start over and nothing will get done. The Republicans are going to oppose anything and everything as they’re more concerned about political posturing, than helping the American people. So as imperfect as this bill is, it’s better than nothing. They also have to merge the House and Senate versions, so nothing’s 100% final.

Jay - according to my American Heritage dictionary the meaning of socialized medicine is “The provision of medical and hospital care for the people at nominal cost by means of government regulation of health services and subsidies derived from taxation”. Or does this new legislation mandate that the definition be changed?
By Jay
December 20, 2009 12:22 PM | Link to this
Man there are a lot of uneducated bozos that are ignorant of the facts. First of all go research American liberalism and the true meaning of it. And go search socialism and the true meaning of it and you’ll see that socialism is against liberalism and vice versa. Second, about Healthcare if you’re going to allow the buying of healthcare across state lines then you know what’s going to happen? The healthcare companies to choose to drop certain services or treatments from their coverages. SO the cheaper the coverage of one state’s healthcare plan, the less coverage you will get. One healthcare plan like in Alabama might not cover certain treatments as a plan in ohio would. So that is the problem with buying across state lines. You’l still end up paying higher premiums for coverage of some advanced medical treatment. And if we had McCain’s idea of taxing your healthcare benefits you wouldn’t be able to afford a good plan. So setting up a health insurance exchange is a great idea because you’ll be able to shop for every kind of plan which includes the public plans that government officials have. You need the public/private competition. Employee based healthcare has many flaws and the consumer must have many options to choose from. But anyway people here are fixated on always blaming the person who’s party is in power instead of. You know good well this economy went into recession under Bush and now that the dems are running the white house its their fault… What the heck? Blasphemy! They’re the ones that are inherited this mess and now the republicans are playing sour losers because they got beat last year in the elections and don’t want to sit at the dinner table and offer their own ideas. What selfish idiots they are. This economy is growing now. 2.5% growth last quarter and the employment rate has declined. ITs going to take months before the jobs come back..Not tomorrow! Job growth takes time and people steady complain that Obama isn’t doing anything. Well I got news for you. Obama has done a lot in his first year in the office than Bush did in his 4 years . Oh wait I Know what Bush did. He took our budget surplus and spend every dime with his 1 trillion dollar tax cut plan. Most of that went to the wealthiest people in the country. Why give to people that don’t need a tax cut? I’ll be glad when Obama lets those bush tax cuts expire because that would help in paying off the debt we have. 1 Trillion dollar tax cuts! Go figure that on a 25 million dollar surplus! And don’t whine about socialism when deregulation caused this economy to spin into a recession. 10 years in the making. Lack of regulation and fairness of the free market hammered this economy. Yes Clinton signed the deregulation pact into law but it was heavily Bi-partisan bill to repeal the glass-steagal act before he signed. And here we are. Now we need to reform our healthcare system which is causing our debt to rise and people not being able to afford it and gain access. If you people don’t think a healhcare exchange is not a great Idea then go look up massachusetts’ version of it. A Republican by the name of Mitt Romney proposed it and it was a bipartisan plan. Now its working pretty well. Now they gotta get the costs down because there is no public plan to compete.

I have exchanged e-mails with Sen Brown about this and other big spending bills he supports. His answer is his mission is to support and strengthen the “Middle Class”. But at who’s expense? The rich upper class whom he sees as the funding party for his “spreading the wealth” programs. But he does not define Middle Class or Upper Class as far as income. Remember Obama started Middle class at $400,00 top salary and has reduced it to last count $45-50k. Socialism has failed to answer any questions about success. European social states tax working class above 50%. Is that what we want?

I work at UPS. they provide health care as a benefit, i guess it is considered a “caddilac” plan because all I pay is a $10 co-pay. What will UPS’s incentive be to keep these plans for their employees if the Gov’t want’s to be the healthcare provider? Plus UPS won’t want to pay a tax on healthcare.40% was the figure the Senate gave out that they want to tax on “caddilac” plans. The best part is, all the taxes are front loaded, we will pay taxes now but healthcare doesn’t go into effect until 2013/14. DDN shouldn’t have to post the plan, the Senate is supposed to, but they probably won’t for a long time since they don’t read it themselves. Jim, people listen to Hannity and Beck because they are a lot better informed than Rachel Madcow and Olberman

In no particular order, other than “money politics” is tightening its grip on DC. Whatever your political view keep the anger and energy going, we need to reach a critical mass where we vote incumbents out of office, like recent governor elections in Va and NJ, and our own mayor’s race. -it is NOT a Rep. or Dem thing, it is “money politics”. -our current financially caused recession is traced straight to the repeal of the Glass Steagal Act in 1997. Clinton was Pres. but he needed Rep. votes to pass it. This Act was passed after the Depression so it “wouldn’t happen again”. The few elders still alive from that period are angry and ask “how could we let it happen again” -Big pharma is supporting this Health Care bill, ask Sen. Brown “why would they do that?” B/C Obama cut a deal with them, don’t fight it and we’ll protect big pharma. When one Sen offered an amendment to permit importation of cheaper drugs from Canada, the Dems said “no, that would break the deal with pharma” Now I don’t care what party you support, but how can you blame that on Boehner or Bush or the Reps? -Reid says proudly it cuts 400 billion from Medicare but another provision adds back 200 to “reimburse doctors who recieve less b/c of the Medicare cuts”!!! -there are dramatically cheaper ways to expand health care coverage to the uninsured-that is not what this bill is about. -Obama admitted in his interview with Oprah, this bill is to “expand insurance coverage to 30 million Americans”, he did not say a word about lowering the staggering cost of medical care. -the problem is too complex for one bill fits all. Scrap it, and start over. EVERYBODY agrees no exclusion for pre-existing condition, more interstate competition among the companies writing medical insurance, and expand lower-cost neighborhood clinics. Work from a base of consensus, instead of contention. Have provisions that p**s off big pharma, don’t invite them in bed. If the AMA and big pharma support it, you know it is bad for you and me.

Perhaps that is the “Jesus” the GOP adores as presented by “nospeekenglis”. It creates talking points but, no substance. Because the GOP has no real connection to the Jesus presented in the Bible. That Jesus really was against evil, greed and the hypocrisy of the GOP and their ideology. And, really, with Christmas approaching, we look towards our faith; be it Christian, Judaism, Wiccan, Druid, or anything else. Because, NO political party should claim moral fiber and align with evangelicals then, take bribes from lobbyists, have immoral and unethical scandals, and Align with the cult known as C-street.

If health care was so badly needed by all Americans why are 18 million still going to be left uncovered in this “new” bill. If it is so needed why doesn’t it go into effect until 2014 but we get taxed for it now? How bout we get rid of the donate a dollar to political contributions on our tax returns or when we get our car registration renewed and we change it to donate a buck for healthcare, more people would get covered that way and doctors wouldn’t have to take a 21% paycut. Who wants to get treatment from a doctor who is bitter, just like I wouldn’t want to buy the last GM car before they close the plant. This is the Hope and Change? Sounds like Broke and Chains to me

The thief’s, drug dealers, lazy, and prostitute’s won’t pay just the working class will. Thanks Mr. Brown for making yourself look like the working class by putting in your long hours and weekends. I’m sure it was stressful work for you while you pull down your six digit salary and long vacations. This country needs to repeal the 16 and 17 amendment and bring in the fair tax so everyone pays. The GOP thinks that Jesus would check your insurance card, make sure you are “in network” then, deny your claim on first round. The GOP thinks that Jesus is into corporate control. Actually, when people rant about “govt. control” they forget that currently they are at the mercy of corporate control. The insurance industry has established and controlled access to health care. They have rationed health care and utilize tactics that so evil, it makes the govt look good. The insurance industry will deny claims on first pass; as a matter of business practice. They will delay claim payment for months, causing medical providers to threaten people for payment. And, they have admin assistants and medical coders making medical decisions; Not allowing doctors and patients to make decisions.

Boehner is owned and operated by the GOP and the insurance industry lobbyists, at this time. His only concerns are what his corporate owners/partners need and, in reality, the American people are secondary. This also occurred when Boehner went on his “drill here, drill now” rants while McCain was running for President. Thank you Sherrod Brown. I am so happy to finally see health care reform happening. Most insurance companies not just health insurance rake in billions in profits and they do outsource jobs to India, Costa Rica, El Salvador. People in those countries have access to your social security information and your personal records. All you people crying about socialism should be worried about your personal information in the hands of people who hate Americans. You also should be upset that good American jobs are outsourced so the CEO’s can buy another house or car while you are going broke.

Its funny how people cry socialism when the government wants to protect the consumer from being black balled by the greedy corporations who capitalize on the CONSUMER’S losses. So whenever the CONSUMER suffers guess who benefits? THE WEALTHY, GREEDY CORPORATIONS!! We have a broken Healthcare system in this country. Some of you may not realize that. We have a 2.5 trillion dollar system which under performs and adds to our soaring debt along with these 2 wars and bush’s 1 trillion dollar tax cuts. It is wrong for the health insurance companies to be so monopolistic and bend the consumer over backwards. There are a lot of markets where there is only one dominant healthcare provider which can charge sky rocketing premiums because of a lack of competition. On top of that the people that have a pre existing condition get denied. So they pay out of pocket for basic and advanced coverage. So its crazy to decry socialism because the government wants to open up competition by setting up exchanges and making available the same plans that our congress members have. Why is that wrong? The Free market is about competition and the private healthcare companies lack it. If you want to decry socialism then it must be a corporate take over of the consumer and would continue to be further flexing of the corporations’ political muscle on political policy in Washington. Ever heard of Lobbyists? Bingo! So don’t say Socialism. More like Corporate take over if we dont keep them in check

Of course, Boehner. No matter what the possible benefits or problems with a health care reform plan, the GOP has made the political calculation that the ONLY thing they are interested in is opposing the Democrats. It doesn’t matter what damage that opposition might cause to the country or the citizenry — the Republicans have no interest other than attacking the Democrats. The previous eight years demonstrated that Republican have no interest in governance, and the last year indicate they don’t want anybody else to govern either.

Let’s have the federal government takeover one-sixth of our economy—when that happens, its’ called fascism! I am amazed at how little most of you fail to understand cause and effect. The mistake our 535 knuckleheads continue to stand behind is allowing an employer to get the tax break for giving you health care. Why? They don’t pay your home insurance or your car insurance. Why should they pay your health insurance? Give the incentive to the individual, that way it won’t be tied to your job, which when you lose it, you won’t lose your health care. You people need to understand that NOTHING is free. It costs someone, something. Taking from one to pay for another is just wealth redistribution, nothing more, nothing less. If free everything is what you want, feel free to emmigrate to EuropeThe whole world is just knockng down their doors to get their most fine health care! Sheeple.
