U.S. Rep. Austria visits Guantanamo Bay
U.S. Rep. Steve Austria, R-Beavercreek, has returned from a congressional fact-finding mission to the U.S. Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Austria’s office announced on Monday, Jan. 11.
The trip, which also included a stop at U.S. Central Command Headquarters at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Fla., occurred last Thursday and Friday, Jan. 7-8, Courtney Whetstone, Austria’s spokeswoman said.
Austria made the trip as a member of the House Homeland Security Committee. In Florida, members were briefed by Gen. David Petraeus, CENTCOM commander.
In a press release, Austria questioned President Barack Obama’s plan to close the Guantanamo Bay prison where terrorists now are held.
“As we saw with the attempted attack on Flight 523 to Detroit on Christmas Day and the attack this fall on Fort Hood, there are very real threats here at home that we must confront,” Austria said in the release.
“It is important to be able to ensure the American people that the administration and Congress are doing everything possible to protect their safety.”

Ajax, Congressman Austria has been paying attention to health care. He voted NO to taking away our rights to choose our own health care. I hope he votes NO again on the version that has our health care benefits TAXED. Besides, this article is not even about health care. It is about our Congressman doing the research needed to come to an informed decision.

Ajax, Take care of YOUR OWN health care like other hard working americans. Try selling your 52 inch TV and cut your smoking back. It’s all about choices.

Jim, those aren’t basic human rights, THOSE ARE AMERICAN RIGHTS, IN OUR AMERICAN BILL OF RIGHTS! These monsters should not be given a trial or a lawyer on the tax payers’ dime. Gitmo should not be closed.

It will be interesting to see if Congressman Austria acquired any additional insight from this trip that would enable him to offer more wisdom about this issue than the canned platitudes of his news release.

Bald Man, I happen to agree with granting basic human rights. Like the right to representation, trial, and Habeas corpus. We tried people for war crimes at the end of WWII for some of the exact same practices Bush and Cheney encouraged. So yeah, It’s a great change and one we should all embrace. We should be the moral compass for the free world.

We’ve housed over 300 terrorist in the US for several years,(long before Obama) and the Republicans never said a word. Now, they’re using their tired, old, party line scare tactics because the President wants to close Gitmo.
