Former Columbus judge expected to be Strickland Lt. Gov. choice
Gov. Ted Strickland on Tuesday, Jan. 19, is expected to name Yvette McGee Brown, a former Columbus judge, as his lieutenant governor running mate.
“It’s done,” a Democratic Party insider with close ties to the Strickland campaign said on Monday of the choice.
The choice is to be named at 2:30 p.m. at Ohio Democratic Party headquarters in Columbus, Strickland’s campaign announced on Monday.
The event will kick off Strickland’s re-election efforts, the campaign said.
Strickland offered the job to his choice on Saturday and the person accepted, said Lis Smith, Strickland’s campaign spokeswoman. Smith declined to say who the choice was.
Strickland last week promised to announce his choice first to his supporters by e-mail. That e-mail is expected to go out before the 2:30 p.m. event.
McGee Brown is president of The Center for Child and Family Advocacy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, an advocacy group. She is a former Franklin County domestic relations and juvenile judge.
The choice is seen as helping Strickland in three ways - with women voters, with black voters (McGee Brown is black) and in Franklin County, the home base for Republican gubernatorial candidate John Kasich, a former Columbus-area U.S. House member.
It would leave the ticket, however, without a representative from populous and strongly Democratic northeastern Ohio. Strickland is from Duck Run in Scioto County in southern Ohio.
Kasich last week introduced Auditor Mary Taylor, from the Akron suburb of Green, as his running mate.
Strickland’s current lieutenant governor, Lee Fisher, is running for the U.S. Senate.

I give Strickland an F on fixing the economy and the school funding issues. Letting NCR leave was a major mess-up. Raising taxes for 2009 was another. If his goal was to eliminate jobs then I’d give him an A+! I must give him credit for signing legislation approving the Castle Doctrine in Ohio. That was a very big achievement enhancing personal security for Ohio’s citizens.

Strickland fixed educ??? The fee for a teacher’s license is the most expensive in the country. The residency program he is proposing has the potential to send future teachers running elsewhere. His proposal for schools is going to cost schools more money in the long run when there is no money to be had.. Sorry, I’m not impressed w/ the man and he won’t have my vote in Nov

“improving the national ranking of Ohio’s public school system to the top 5 in the nation?” That was the work of former State Superintendent of Public Instruction Susan Zelman. Ohio’s ranking will plummet precipitously when new, dumbed-down academic standards are adopted per Governor Strickland’s “reforms.”

No matter who it is, they have bought a ticket on a doomed flight. The Dems have zero chance to retain Ohio state offices and they know it. Wait until the results from Mass. on Tuesday night - that is the future for the whole country as we step back from the abyss.

Strickland and Obama both stink. Wish we could vote them both out soon. NOTHING they are doing is helping this country, locally or nationally. They are really really hurting it!

Under Strickland Ohio’s business climate ranking has improved to 4th in the country, a University tuition freeze, Growth of clean energy industry, Education improving, balanced budget. I mean Strickland has suffered from a major economic downturn and major gridlock in the state legislature with both houses not agreeing with each other on legislation. Jobs has also been an issue for him but Ohio has been losing Jobs since the year 2000 so its more so the person in power is blamed for the economy. But under the last 4 years ohio has diversified its economy going from a manufacturing oriented economy to a more advanced manufacturing, healthcare, bio technological and insurance type economy. It is still diversifying. Under Taft it was still a Manufacturing state. But the Job losses have been plaguing this state for years and creating them will take time. Both parties need to be questioned and not just the party in power.

Adam, How exactly did Strickland mess up education? He tried to solve the school funding problem that has eluded us for years, but it’s difficult to do with no money. He’s faced with tough choices that are not his making. Strickland, like many an incumbent, is turning out to be the fall guy. It’s easy to understand. I think people are fed up with both parties.

Richard- You mean cut your income taxes by double-digits over his term and cut (not reduce the growth of, actually cut) government spending? How about freezing tuition? How about improving the national ranking of Ohio’s public school system to the top 5 in the nation?

I wouldn’t vote for Strickland if his runningmate was Jesus. Just when I thought no one could mess up education more than Taft….then came Strickland.

Dale - Isn’t that a rather obtuse, close-minded view? An attitude like that is what has gotten us into our current mess. Vote policy - not party!
