4 Dayton city commissioners taking on GOP gubernatorial candidate John Kasich

Dayton City Commissioners Nan Whaley, Joey Williams, Matt Joseph and Dean Lovelace - all Democrats - are holding a press conference at downtown Dayton’s Cooper Park on Monday, Jan. 25, at 3:30 p.m. to criticize John Kasich’s tax plan for Ohio.

Kasich, a Republican, is challenging Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland in November’s governor’s race.

In a press release from the Ohio Democratic Party, the event is to “highlight the devastating effects that Republican gubernatorial candidate and former Congressman John Kasich’s reckless tax plan would have on local communities, including Dayton.”

According to the Associated Press, legislative analysts have determined that a proposal to phase out Ohio’s income tax would cost state and local governments and libraries more than $800 million next year.

Kasich has made a 10-year phase-out of the income tax central to his campaign platform.

In a just-released Dayton Daily News/ Ohio Newspaper poll, Kasich is leading Strickland 51 percent to 45 percent.

Cooper Park is located next to the downtown Dayton Metro Library at Second and St. Clair streets.

I have owned a business with 700 employees here in Ohio for 23 years. The Republicans have run this state for the past 20 and when Taft was governor we hit rock bottom. They fixed nothing. Strickland has had to try and clean uo this mess witha republican state senate. Kasich worked for Lehman Brothers till they went under in 2008 and has NOT released his TAX RETURNS for the past 5 years…I trust Strickland over this WALL STREET insider who is hiding something…seriously why not just release your tax returns Kasich???

Ohioan you are showing your ignorance. Why don’t you do a little research and you will find out that Ohio did not always have an income tax. Ohio use to be one of the best states to live in cause jobs were a plenty and cost of living was reasonable. If you don’t have a state income tax that means you have more money in your pocket for your local community. Open you mind instead of being so close minded.

the work of the commissioners aside, they do have a valid point. kasich’s idea to eliminate the state income tax is ridiculous. it will completely and utterly devastate schools & vital services. local taxpayers will be met with even greater burdens to pass levies year after year. we’re not texas, florida, or nevada (all states with no or low state income taxes) - we cant come up with the money via oil, sales or tourism. where does he plan on getting this money!?

By we need real leaders

Do you want hard decisions that true leaders make to effect real progress in this state rather than keep four “leaders” who stand on the sidelines doing nothing but finger pointing? Elect John and Jon.

Jeff, Kasich is not an extremist and he is not wacky. Try a little maturity and actually learn something about the man. But no you would rather follow the party line than look at the people. And the only thing you can do is be childish with name calling.

If Dayton officials would worry about doing their jobs and maintaining our community instead of trying to control it we would better off. When an business comes up with a good plan to help Dayton and bring jobs back they fight it until you give them credit for it. Dont worry Dayton is tring to sell our water now H20 campaign, I figure when Noah comes back to build another ark at least he will create jobs to save this dying city, until he gets rejected for a building permit.

As an independent I can say that I will do everything i can to get new blood into city commission. This “Gang of Four” is as bad as their namesake. The income tax needs to go and there are other sources of income. Reducing waste and redundancy would be a start. I am voting for anyone who will just stop spending to fix things.

Once you are elected you should stop representing the Dems or the Republicans because you work for the people. This political grandstanding is ridiculous. They shouldn’t represent themselves as City Commissioners- nor should they be getting involved in the race for the Governor. And, if they didn’t notice- their “team mate, McLin got spanked. Looking around- they’ve got an awful lot of things they should be doing- this isn’t one of them.

Just what we need is advice from people that run the cesspool known as Dayton, you know the same city listed at the top of gang and drug activity, not to mention the worst school district in Ohio, behind Cleveland.

We need a better system to fix our schools, and attract businesses. The tax system is not working, people are complaining and not voting for the tax levys. It would be nice to see someone who will stand up and fix a broken system.

While the GOP doesn’t have an answer for every ailment, they are known for fiscal conservatism. The reason we can do away with Income Tax was obvious until Gov Strickland took over and passed so many new spending plans. We had a “Rainy Day Fund” which still had a Billion dollars until Strickland raided it for spend spend spend. We also had been lowering the Income Tax until he stopped last installment. He alos spent several Billions in one-time stimulus monies to “Balance” his new budget. Where will we get the funds to pay for these one-time fixes? We will have to cut spending and raise revenue through more jobs. GOP platform.

Kasich will be better than Strickland, because Kasich believes in the people. Kasich knows that give us the right atmosphere we will work hard and grow our state. Ohio use to be one of the best states in the country. Jobs a plenty and cost of living was one of the best in the country. Ohio did not always have a state income tax and we were prosperous. Kasich will bring businesses to Ohio. These 4 are worried about losing entitlement money. They want to keep people on the government dole so they have voters. They do not want you to be self-sufficient, they want you dependent on them. Kasich balanced the budget under Clinton. If you want Ohio to be a great place to live once again, then you will vote for Kasich. If you want Detroit, then vote for Strickland.

Where are the dollars going to come from to provide infrastructure and basic city services like police, fire protection, trash collection, etc? In other states that don’t have a state income tax, everything else is taxed, even personal property. Believe me, you will pay one way or another. And businesses will still go where the labor is the cheapest in their obscene display of greed.

Who cares? Why exactly should anyone listen to those four folks? What are their accomplishments? Their ‘press conference’ won’t reference Strickland’s accomplishments, because there aren’t any. I agree with the poster who said this was a ‘badge of honor’ Instead of all the ‘banter’, maybe someone down there ought to hold a press conference to say what they are going to do to create jobs or make their city more biz friendly. Imagine what we might be able to get done if we threw politics out of it? Sad really.

There was a day when businesses, like NCR, supported their communities. Now, businesses play off one state against another, or in the case of Dayton, one municipality against another to get what they can in the way of tax breaks, etc. There is no real loyalty or sense of civic responsibility among business leaders. That’s why both Dayton and Ohio are in the sad state they are in. And with more big business going off shore in search of, guess what!—tax breaks—the nation as a whole

Taxes, like them or not, are essential to maintain basic services, whether performed by full-time government employees or contracted out. The fact that states like Ohio, or cities like Dayton, must consider a drastic lowering of taxes (and thus reduce essential services) is indicative of how greedy—or desperate—businesses are these days. Moreover, infrastructure comes from taxes: what business would locate in a state with decaying and underdeveloped infrascture? In the end, we all have to pay, one way or another.

“With Brown’s stunning victory, Democrats not only lost control of the Executive branch, but half of the Legislative branch* as well — what had been a Democratic supermajority suddenly became a Republican superminority.”… We might as well give up now.

So, with a quorum, who will be taking minutes and what other city business will transpire? It may be time for our elected officials to remember what John H. Patterson had to say about Dayton on March 19, 1896 on what Dayton should do to become a model city. http://www.daytonhistorybooks.com/page/page/4390483.htm Even then, the possibility of NCR moving out of Dayton was under consideration. It should be obvious to the most intelligent among us that John Kasich wants to remove impediments in Ohio to JOB creation, not merely prop up spending by local government outlets. I would stipulate that our elected officials at all levels of government start thinking about removing artificial barriers to private sector job creation and retention. Until then, they are wasting our time and treasure.

And what makes you think Kasich is going to be even better? He’s just like other politicians. Campaign great but get into the office and end up doing nothing to effect the economy in a positive way. Why don’t you people wake up and notice that the governor doe not have a great effect on the economy and that you are simply thinking about voting out a guy because of the current economic condition we are in not because he caused it. Had it been Kasich being in office you people would be sick of him too if it was the same economic environment. Great example of the person in power suffering so I assume republican or democrat the person would be in trouble because of the current economic situation right?

Who would listen to the commission that has done nothing to get Dayton off of Forbes Fastest-Dying Cities list? If I were Kasich, I’d consider this a badge of honor! How much money did cost Dayton’s government and Libraries when NCR hightailed it to Georgia?
