Portman “prays” that health care plan fails

On a day that brought President Barack Obama to Ohio to make a final appeal for congressional approval of his health care overhaul plan, Republican U.S. Senate candidate Rob Portman had a different message.

“I pray that it will not pass,” Portman said on Monday, March 15. His comments came in a meeting with members of the Dayton Daily News editorial board.

Portman said the plan that Obama is trying to get the Democratic-controlled Congress to approve would increase costs.

“It’s unbelievable,” said Portman. “…We’re going to have higher, not lower costs.”

Obama, who was in the Cleveland suburb of Strongsville on Monday, campaigned for president on a pledge to work across party lines to bring the country together, said Portman, a former Cincinnati-area U.S. House member. Instead, the Democratic president has turned issues such as health care overhaul over to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and other Democrats who control Congress, said Portman.

If elected, Portman promised to be a results-oriented senator who would work with Democrats to get things done.

“I don’t think our country has ever been in greater need of those kinds of efforts,” Portman, who also served as budget director and U.S. trade representative under former President George W. Bush, said.

Seth Bringman, spokesman for the Ohio Democratic Party, lashed back at Portman in an e-mail.

“While Rob Portman is praying for the status quo on health care, we will be praying for the millions of Americans without health insurance and the millions more middle class families who can’t afford rising health care costs,” said Bringman.

“We are closer than ever to health insurance reform that helps middle class families and small businesses, but the naysayers like Congressman Portman will do anything to stand up for the insurance companies at the expense of ordinary Ohioans.”

The W.H.O. is a leftist organization that has a knack for twisting facts. Why do the upper class from other countries come here to get QUALITY health care? Why do Canadian women come here to give birth? Why was a Brit on the news with crooked left arm? Cause his appointment was like 6 weeks down the road,by the time they got to him it had knitted into 2 elbows.I’m not real religious, but I’m praying too.

JT your poston 3-16-10 at 12:11am says alot about you. Conservatives don’t want to deny you anything. They just want you to work for what you get. Don’t be irresponsible as virtually all Democrats are and expect everything to be given to you by the govt. The federal government doesn’t produce anything to give to you they have to take away things from normal hard working decent people and give it to those unworthy folks such as yourself who don’t produce. I have no compassion for those who don’t try, whine about moan how mean people are holding them back. Get off your butt, go work two jobs and get a college education. By the way…. when you see that you have to go into hock for 20 years to pay back your expensive schooling - thank a liberal for making a college education so abhorently expensive. Its the liberal way of keeping the low class in their place.

Portman is a decent guy but he is just flat out wrong on this issue. A “no” vote is a vote for guaranteed increases; we pay roughly twice as much as any other country for health care and get substandard results. Average life expectancy in the US is 78.2 years, which places us behind Cuba and only slightly ahead of Solvenia (source: World Health Organization). Is that the health care system that you want to preserve?

Obama’s “plan” does NOTHING to stop the increase in medical expenses, which is at the HEART of our health care problem. I pray it fails too - Obama is a trained animal doing the bidding of his handlers. He’s the worst President this country has ever had.

Mr. Ayers: What do you mean, pro-abortion Democrats? Many Democrats who are Pro-choice are against abortion, but feel that the issue is between the parent(s) and God, and not the government. Ironic, isn’t it that the anti-abortion Republicans are against big government.

Why is it once Republicans seem to have life’s essentials they want to deny them to everyone else. They all seem terribly mean spirited and defensive of big business! I say the hell with ‘em!!

Red, I have looked at Portman and would never vote for him. Anyone with that much hate in thier heart for people to not have health care is evil. He lies about it as well. He has been around here to long and needs to leave with his lying party of NO

OK….then r, who’s your choice? What do you know about Portman? The only bad thing anyone will find on him, is his connection to GWB. Portman did not finish there because he must not have agreed with things. Portman is the best choice for all Ohioians. If people look at him, they will like him and vote for him.

“If elected, Portman promised to be a results-oriented senator who would work with Democrats to get things done.” WRONG. Portman would be another in the party of “No”.
