Brunner mounts “no endorsement” campaign in Dem Senate race

Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner doesn’t want the Ohio Democratic Party to make an endorsement in her race with Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate.

“Hands Off Our Primary” is Brunner’s battle cry. In an e-mail, she said that Fisher has sent the state party a letter asking for its endorsement.

“Until now, the party has remained neutral. We need your help to keep it that way—not just for me, but for Ohio,” Brunner wrote.

“A state party endorsement at this late date provides no conceivable benefit for anyone but my opponent. As Democrats, we’re all in this together. A party endorsement would alienate supporters of the candidate not endorsed and hurt party unity after the primary election.”

Her request comes just before the party’s executive committee is scheduled to meet on Wednesday, March 24.

Seth Bringman, spokesman for the Ohio Democratic Party, confirmed that the executive committee is scheduled to meet on Wednesday but declined comment on whether the party had received a letter from Fisher or whether the committee planned an endorsement vote. If the committee doesn’t take an endorsement Wednesday, it could consider one later.

The Fisher campaign has not returned calls or responded to an e-mail request.

The primary is May 4 but early voting starts March 30. The winner of the primary will face Republican Rob Portman, former Cincinnati-area U.S. House member and budget director and U.S. trade representative for President George W. Bush, in the general election.

Jennifer handed over to the Republicans the redistricting Board—talk about selfish? Talk about who will help the Democrats win in November? jennifer handed over her office to the Republicans. Party endorsement is not necessary if each party pledges to support the other if he or she loses-Fisher made such a pledge where is Jennifer’s pledge now that there will be no endorsement—a request Fisher made for party unity in November. Democrats always shoot themselves in the foot and Jennifer takes the top award for being a “Cheny” whose aim was also bad.

Alex: The only sinking ship here, pal, is the other guy. He’s captaining the RMS Titanic and it’s about to hit the iceberg. Vanessa is right, the other guy is unelectable. You know it and I know it. He lost in 94. He lost in 98. He’s about to lose again. The other point that Jan raises is very appropriate as well. And actually in the 70 primary Metzenbaum was the candidate anointed by Gilligan and was challenged by Glenn. Despite the endorsement by the establishment, Glenn won.

Remember 1974 and the Glenn/Metzenbaum primary. It took many years for Senator Glenn to look kindly towards those who endorsed his Primary opponent. Let’s not shoot ourselves in the foot AGAIN!

The party should let the people decide. The only thing an endorsement says is that Strickland/ Fisher have more friends on the central committee.

Brunner dosn’t need an endorsement, she got her friends at ACORN on her side. The fix has been in since she ignored the law and curried favor with them last election. Go ACORN GO…..

The State Democratic Party could slit-its-own-throat with an endorsement of Fisher. The Primary would determine which candidate has the the largest natural base. It should be noted that Brunner won handily years ago in her race for SoS. On the other-hand, Fisher has lost the last 2 times his name appeared alone on the statewide ballot. We’ll find out how smart the Democratic leadership really is in Ohio.

The stench of desperation is all over this move. Brunner’s down in every primary poll conducted, has virtually no money remaining, and is about to officially lose the state party’s endorsement. Time to wake up to reality Jen, you’re campaign is a sinking ship.

Remember the Hyatt/Boyle primary? Lots of women do. The party should let the people decide. Fisher is unelectable, and everybody knows it. When Brunner wins the primary, the money will follow
