Sen. Voinovich blasts violence in health care protests

U.S. Sen. George Voinovich, R-Ohio, on Thursday, March 25, issued a statement sharply criticizing violence associated with protests against the new health care overhaul signed into law by Democratic President Barack Obama.

Here is the statement from Voinovich, Ohio’s senior senator, who is retiring at the end of this year:

“The national debate on health care has been at times frustrating, heated and tense.

“While I am absolutely opposed to what the Obama Administration and Congressional Democrats have done - on both the policy and process - I cannot condone any action of violence or threat of violence against anyone who holds views different from my own.

“Our country is looked upon around the world as the beacon for fair and free elections; a democracy unparalleled in history. Voters spoke in 2008 and this is a clear illustration that elections have significant consequences.

“For those who have concerns, I would urge them to circle November 2, 2010, on their calendars - the day their voices can and will be heard the loudest and clearest. That is the way Americans express their dissatisfaction with elected officials whose decisions they disagree with. Violence against any person in public office or their family is reprehensible and shall not stand.”

The ignorance surrounding health care issues are unprecedented. If we truly research and educate ourselves about this legislation instead of “following the crowd” and working in the “rumor mill” we may find that we wee wrong on both sides about this issue and that overall this is a step towards helping “all” Americans who cannot help themselves. Some things can debated for change and others improved upon but violence only begets violence.

I do not agree with any violence by any American in regards to Obamacare. Yes, I am furious and angry about the passage of Obamacare, but I also believe violence and name calling is ignorant and does not give your case against it or for it any credibility. But…Politicians must be reminded that they work for the American People and in order to earn respect they need to give respect. Politicians bare responsibility in the violence every time they call Americans “Nazi’s”, “racists” and “teabaggers.”Pres. Obama needs to act like an adult! He won now stop sticking it in the opponents face!!!

‘… In a letter to President Obama and Congress released yesterday, an alliance of Florida Tea Party groups called the Tea Party movement “a peaceful movement” and declared that they “stand in stark opposition to any person using derogatory characterizations, threats of violence, or disparaging terms toward members of Congress or the President.” A similar coalition in Colorado — where the office of Rep. Betsy Markey (D-CO) recently notified police about a phone call it received threatening violence — released a similar statement. “Tea party and similar groups across Colorado are saddened tonight to hear of threats made upon Democratic lawmakers in response to the passing their recent health insurance reform legislation, specifically … Rep. Betsy Markey,” it said. And FreedomWorks, the Washington grassroots lobbying group that has helped co-ordinate Tea Party events put out a statement declaring “political violence is both immoral and ineffective, and will only set the movement back.” …’ http://tinyurl.com/yevjul7

LEFT COMMENTERS: if you prefer the moral high ground, stick to the facts and avoid the name calling; the seeds of violence are planting by the verbally abusive. RIGHT COMMENTERS: The fact that the right has also suffered violence against it, that there are other conceivable reasons why Palin might use cross-hairs, or that Bush was picked on before Obama was picked on, all sound a little bit too much like the elementary school cry, “he did it too!” It’s still wrong, counterproductive, often illegal, and drags the country in yet another wrong direction.

grumpy, yep and your ignorance is so bliss. “crosshairs” is a symbol of a gun pointing at you. She could have used a star, dot, checkmark as to signify her list. Just file it away as another one of Palin’s blunders to be used against her later. One should hope that the “crosshairs” she designates on others doesn’t backfire and someone puts her behind realtime “crosshairs”!

Though I do not agree with Senator Voinovich’s opinion of the health care law, I respect him as a man of integrity. As to Palin, while she herself may not use guns against those she disagrees with, her language and use of crosshairs is irresponsible and inflamatory. She is inciting unstable supporters. I do not have any respect for Palin.

This is the reason that tea parties need to be reserved for 6 year old girls and not something associated with politics. And can anyone tell me when RINO became the cool word to say. As a Republican it grates on me this word gets tossed about so freely. It is the dumbest argument to make.

“I still have head no threats” That’s because you haven’t been listening. Several Democratic Congressmen have released voicemails they have received. The threats are plain. However, we all know that the unhinged Right got where they are today by denying plain facts, so your denialism is totally expected. “We have a V-president who curses like a drunken sailor and drops the F bomb on national TV. That guy has to be the court jester of Capitol Hill, yet that is what you people chose to represent you nation.” And yet I’ll bet you were fine when VP Cheney was doing the same thing. Right-wing hypocrisy: it’s not just for breakfast anymore.

I could think of a couple of reasons why she would have “Crosshairs” on those people she dont agree with and none of them are violent. You know why those are on there sassy. But you choose to use that as a slam. You people are completely ignorant. NO public figure is going to condone anything that would lead to violence. I have watch every channel that carries news. I have watch every video that all the threats supposidly came form. I still have head no threats and I have saw no pictures where bricks were throw through democratic offices. Dont you think if this had happened that the media would have been all over it. All I have seen so far is a lot of P* of people who felt they really got the shaft and they are extremely angry at the way it happened. Everyone is all ticked off at Boehner. Why? Because he said what he felt? He cursed when he said it? PLEASE give me a break. We have a V-president who curses like a drunken sailor and drops the F bomb on national TV. That guy has to be the court jester of Capitol Hill, yet that is what you people chose to represent you nation.

If she isn’t advocating violence why post on Facebook, a list of 20 individuals she disagrees with with “crosshairs”, She is a public figure, a former candidate for the second highest office in the country. Add this to her file, because this will come back and bite her in the azz. btw…how-long, have you ever heard the saying “you got to bring azz…to get azz?” All you promoting is alot of dead bodies which may be your own and everyone you care about as well.

They may not be advocating it, but they certainly are insinuating it. Eliminationist rhetoric from the unhinged right has been on the rise for quite some time now and is well-documented. It’s past time the so-called “leadership” start taking responsibility for their words, but the likelyhood is low.

Boehner, Palin, Beck—none of them have ever advocated violence. Actually, quite the opposite. Beck has been saying for days now that the democrats will try to compare the peaceful demonstrations to hippy like demonstrations in the 60’s. Dems accuse conservatives of Nazi like activities, racism, and low IQ. Dems don’t want to argue policy, so they resort to distractions. They even resort to planting idiots at peaceful demonstrations. The acts of violence are from individuals, not the peaceful tea party, and it’s not political, it’s criminal activity and should be treated as such.

Violence is not the way to do get it done. We must band together, Conservatives and Republicans, and vote out the Democrat majority. This could be the end of our Republic if we don’t. Last election Conservatives showed us that they wouldn’t join w/us and now we have socialized HC, student loans, energy, banks, private industry (auto). If we don’t join together, we will fall separately and our country will be sacrificed to the Socialists. We must band together. We must continue PEACEFUL demonstrations and disown all racism and infantile actions. We must not be silenced. I expect the Socialists to continue to create plants at tea party demonstrations, but we can’t let them win this time.

The violence will be tagged as coming from the “conservative” end of the spectrum. McCain and Hatch’s comments really just added fuel to the teabagger and republican anger. Which is not helping their ideology. And, those actions will be equated with groups of old; SS, Hitler’s thugs. Bricks and bullets do not win converts. Unless, of course, you are some sort of neo-radical-hate group. (hmm, sounds like a teabagger rally)

Words are an interesting thing. They provide clarity and an insight into the thoughts and character of the individual who speaks or writes them. Upon carefull examination of those offered by Senator Voinovich, I see no agreement on his part that the purported acts of agression occurred against any of his fellow members of congress. He DID warn against any threat or act of violence from occurring. This coincides with advice already given by Tea Party participants.

I’m glad somebody in the Republican Party chooses to condemn, rather than actually encourage, this stuff. Of course, since Voinovich isn’t running again, he doesn’t have to deal with the consequences of standing up to the delusional freaks, like certain commentators here, who think that conservatives are all saints who never do anything wrong by definition.

I heard on the news tonight, with my own ears, several vicious and threatening voice mails left for members of Congress. There have been death threats. Bricks have been thrown through six or seven democratic offices. These wacko’s are being incited by the rhetoric of people like Boehner, Michelle Bachman, and Sarah Palin. I’m glad to see George step up and denounce these acts.

Mr. A, Democrats have said people are calling names but, the only proof has been them saying it and saying someone called them names. It worked in the presidential election because McCain refused to fight back with the issues. Pelosi and Reid are not black and the matter is irrelevant to the issue of health care. As usual, the media wants to lead every newscast with the story but, the only soundbites are from Democrats saying such and such was said or done. That is the news of this century, which is no news just the same crying by the people elected by Americans. The problem is they have contempt for the voters and are trying to get some kind of sympathy at the same time of hoping we will forget what they’ve pushed down our throats.

If there is any proof that a crime has been committed then go ahead and prosecute. I’ll bet it is coming from Democrats trying to convince you there are something different. From Day 1, the left has attacked the Tea Party Movement ( after years of attacking George W. Bush ), in the process they have shown their true colors as anti-Constitution, anti-American with both country and citizens. The national flower is now the pansy. The RINO senator may buy the cry-baby approach but, I don’t.
