Dems on top in Ohio in new poll
Democratic fortunes appear to be on the upswing among Ohio voters as a new poll finds Gov. Ted Strickland leading for re-election and both Democratic candidates for U.S. Senate ahead of their likely Republican opponent.
The Quinnipiac University poll, released on Wednesday, March 31, also found Democratic President Barack Obama’s approval in Ohio on the rebound after congressional approval of his health care overhaul plan.
In the governor’s race, Strickland leads Republican John Kasich, the former suburban Columbus U.S. House member, 43-38 percent, about the same as Strickland’s lead in a Feb. 23 poll. Strickland’s job approval rating - 49-40 percent - and favorability rating - 46-35 percent - are statistically the same as in the February poll.
Despite his edge against Kasich, Strickland fares poorly with voters when it comes to his handling of the economy. Just 35 percent approve of his handling of the economy, compared to 52 percent who disapprove.
In the Senate race, Democratic Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher leads Republican Rob Portman, a former Cincinnati-area U.S. House member, 41-37 percent, reversing a 40-37 percent lead for Portman last month.
Democratic Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner also leads Portman, but just barely, 38-37 percent, reversing a 40-35 percent Republican lead last month.
Obama’s approval rating is now an almost even as 47 percent approve and 48 percent disapprove, up from last month when 52 percent disapproved and 44 percent approved.
“Perhaps it’s the passage of the health care overhaul and the fact that people like being with a winner,” Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, said in a press release.
Whether it’s the beginning of a long-term trend, won’t be known for some time, “perhaps until November,” said Brown.
The poll also finds that most Ohioans still oppose Obama’s health care overhaul, but opposition is waning. In the new poll, voters disapprove the plan, 50-43 percent, compared to 55-36 percent in November.
Independent voters appear to be helping Obama. They disapproved his performance 57-38 percent in February, but in the new poll disapprove his performance 40-54 percent.
Not all the news is good for Democrats. The poll finds that voters say 38-25 percent that they are more likely to vote against their congressman if he or she supported Obama’s health care overhaul.
Also, voters narrowly say, 46-44 percent, that they don’t want the state’s next U.S. senator to generally Obama’s policies.
Obama still fares better than former Republican President George W. Bush. Voters say by a 45-32 percent margin that Obama is a better president. Even independents give Obama the edge, 35-31 percent.
The poll interviewed 1,526 registered voters from March 23 to Monday, March 29, and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.

Point of Order: everyone in America could ALWAYS get health care when they needed it. Please cite a case were someone has been denied emergency medicine? You CAN’T, because the law wouldn’t allow for it. This new law is not about health care reform. It’s about punishing the rich for daring to get an education and make something out of their life. If some poor illegal immigrant can’t get medicine, TOUGH. Put him on a train! Your other point of order is ridiculous. You obviously don’t have the mental capacity to understand the difference between an “Official” attack and/or the moral and financial backing provided to radicals to carry out such an attack. What about a preemptive strike? Can I buy a vowel, Pat?

Not sure if its 1910: I saw the video on CBS. They were shouting “Kill the Bill’ No one was spit on. No one was called a racial slur. Please provide a link to this so called video you NEVER saw. Please continue getting your news from ABC (All Barack Channel). It’s entertaining. to say the least. Sorry about the typo. I wonder what Freud would say about your need to correct it? By the way, your post had plenty of name calling in it, so don’t talk about other folks. (But then I digress)

Point of Order, Define “radical.” Presidents George Bush and George W. Bush attacked a country which never officially attacked the United States. President Barak Obama demands healthcare for everyone. How dare he demand that everyone who is sick is able to get medical attention? Get real.

NAACP, I wonder if you are using the Marcus Garvey definition of the acronym(National Association for the Advancement of Certain People).I digress. I would not have to make any statements about the “new aged klansmen” and their opinions about Bush because, if you have ever read the work of Sigmund Freud, you already have stated their position subliminally.Thank you for exposing the belief. Video provided on CBS news caught the slurs and the spitting on elected officials. So, check your facts. Racism is alive and well in America, unfortunately, some Blacks (not balcks)do use it as a crutch to make excuses for why they will not do for themselves. Just as some whites blame Blacks, Hispanics, or Asians for taking opportunities from them. It is funny how when in an open forum…those who consider themselves, slightly conservative, the first thing done is to call names or label people. The subject of the labeling spends so much energy trying to shed the label, nothing ever is accomplished. If something helps someone else other than a wealthy person, automatically there is an uproar and someone is called “liberal.” So pardon me if I do not grab my sheet,er..my tea bag. The teachings from my bible always told me it was a sin to fail to act when someone is in need. Go healthcare. Go Obama. And…YES, WE CAN…AND YES, HE DID!

Funny how the “Not sure if its 1910” and “The More things change” kind of racists always find their way onto these boards. Your argument is nonsense. You guys are the reason we can’t get past this crap. You are both racists of the worst kind. Three separately verified videos were taken at the alleged racial slurs that were hurled at congressmen last week. One verdict: IT NEVER HAPPENED! Jesse Jackson Jr. (Pure Racist) has his own video, was part of the group, and has been asked to show proof of these allegations. He has not. He would be the first to scream racism if it were true. Did your so called klansmen accuse the balck Liberals of not liking George Bush because he was white? NOPE! Hitler because he was white? NOPE! Charles Manson? The list goes on. Racism does exist in America, and it is unfortunate, but I would suppose most tea baggers don’t like President Obama because of his radical agenda. PERIOD! You don’t have a real argument so you throw this one out there. It’s shameful.

Quinnipac is one of the better polls out there. Once the voters stop listening to the brain washed tea baggers and the millions spent by the Health care companies. Dem approvals will rise.

Let’s Compare: Fiscal Responsibility- (Antibellum America) “ we can’t waste nothin’ make sure to give the slaves all the left over parts of the hog so we don’t waste…that way they can be big and strong and breed more bucks for plantin” (2010) Give the rich more tax breaks because if have more money the crumbs that fall out of our pockets will feed the poor.” Limited Gov’t (Antibellum)- “Mr.Lincoln, don’t worry how many slaves I got and how I beat em, its my business!” (2010) “Let me get this straight, I am rich, I have more than I need and you want me to share my blessings to actually live what the Bible says to love thy neighbor? Screw the poor, I got mine, they can get theirs. If they are crippled, they can still work, not my problem.” Free Enterprise (Antibellum) “ I think if I by 2 more acres and 4 more slaves, my ship will come in.” (2010)- I want to be the next IBM, but wait, you mean I have to pay healthcare and actually care about my employees?”

Generally, the group of Americans complaining about Obama are the small group closest to the microphones and t.v. cameras. The stock market has been up the economy is on the rebound and the Repubs even got their offshore drilling. Around the world Obama is respected,in America we disrespect him daily. Racial slurs are hurled at congressmen and the president daily, but yet the country is slowly recovering. Funny, how back in 1910 people wore sheets, called the meeting rallys and had to have them at night, today we do them in broad day light and bring CNN and Fox News and the news cheers them on. For the vocal minority that oppose the progress made in the first half of Obama’s admin… go somewhere, sitdown, be quiet and watch some old Sarah Palin beauty pageants or something. Leave MY president alone so he can fix the country!

Barney Frank – Democrat – U.S. Representative from Massachusetts. Admitted to having paid Stephen L. Gobie, a male prostitute, for sex and subsequently hiring Gobie as his personal assistant. Gobie used the congressman’s Washington apartment for prostitution. ssbn: at least the Republicans we’re looking at the opposite sex , and the RNC is not “elected”. Tell us what “tea bagger” principle you do not believe in” Here they are: Fiscal Responsibility, Limited Goverment (10th Amendment), and Free Enterprise (Constitution). Those other storied you keep citing are fabrications of the Liberal media.

Russell, you said a mouthful. Isn’t it sad that every election I have been eligible to vote in has been a “lesser of two evils” type vote. I can’t think of a time when I was 100% behind one guy or the other. This Dems vs: Repubs nonsense has got to stop. We are all on the same dang team.

I love it when Fox News uses polls of their own audience and tries to call them unbiased, and then complain about the polling bias of any other poll that disagrees with theirs. The Rasmussen Polls have been proven to show a 4 to 9 percent Repulican bias, but I see their polls in this paper all the time. The only poll that really matters is the one taken in the voting booth.

pt, you lost. When you have a bunch of crazies out there doing their Teabagger dance. And believe me, fat angry rednecks who probably have no real jobs, out at teabag rallies, will only convince the public that teabaggers are nuts. The RNC/topless bar party, does not sit well with the evangelicals. And, “christian militia” groups, do not help your ideology.

When you have republicans chasing Teabaggers. With Teabagger rallies and people with teabags on their clothing, holding hate filled signs and shouting obscenities about our president. Plus idiots like Palin and Beck selling books and pushing their own brand of hate. Then, the GOP having parties at strip clubs. Plus, a so-called “christian militia” group; extreme right wing, plotting to kill cops and overthrow of our govt. Of course, the Dems offer a safer and sane approach. The conservatives have ruined their own name and ideology.

I really don’t take into polls because most of them are biased anyways. Like the other polls has Kasich leading strickland but the politico has Strickland leading Kasich and the quinnipiac poll has Strickland leading. However I have taken these polls and all they are is random telephone calls to likley voters. These polls are just a matter of how many more republicans are polled more than dems and dems polled more than republicans. Thats why you have different poll results.

After BO said that drilling here would not reduce energy cost in the US, he flipped and adopted the McCain/Palin energy idea. Too bad, they are not in charge now. Not worried about the polls now because the voters have not yet gotten their actual tax bills. But it will be soon. Then take the poll. The poll will reverse just like BO on “drill, baby, drill.”

I would be very sad if I thought for one second that conservative and republican voters won’t remember next election how this administration has corrupted our law process and stomped on our Constitution. I can’t wait until the next election, and the one after that! The Democrats lost their bearings when they turned Socialist and allowed left leaning radicals to take over the Democratic party.

Neon, I fear that the Dems do have a chance. The Tea Party will almost certainly split the Conservative vote, and the average Liberal hasn’t wrapped their mind around how much this will cost yet. All they see is this “free” health care they will be getting. I keep thinking that it must cost around 8 or 10K to insure me for 1 year. I am single and healthy. If I multiply that by the supposed 32 million this plan will pick up, I get 320 BILLION per year. How the heck can they convince America that our rates won’t go through the roof? I’m sure someone will post how “Stupid” I am for throwing this out there, but they won’t try to answer it …
