Strickland says “no” to Arizona-type immigration law

Gov. Ted Strickland said on Wednesday, April 28, that he wouldn’t sign into law an immigration control measure like the one that just went into effect in Arizona.

“I do not think it would be wise for Ohio to have such legislation,” Strickland said at a press conference where he released his federal income tax returns for 2006-2009.

His opposition to the Arizona immigration law came after state Rep. Courtney Combs, R-Hamilton, and Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones on Tuesday sent a letter to Strickland and legislative leaders urging them to move ahead with stalled immigration legislation in the Ohio legislature.

Combs has sponsored a bill that would require employers to check a prospective hire’s legal status or risk noncompliance with tax law.

The Arizona law gives police the authority to detain individuals whom they think might be illegal immigrants.

I saw Jay Leno at Correspondent Dinner his best line was; “That was my favorite story (this year) Republicans and a Lesbian bondage club. It’s ironic, Republicans don’t want lesbian getting married but they do like watching them “tie the knot”. So I thought that was interesting.” You can say the same about Tea Party (they are haters not debaters or as others have dubbed them screamers not dreamers), they say they respect the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence but they do not mind passing laws, through weak Governors (no one voted for this crazy) who only care about getting reelected on the backs of undocumented workers, that will not pass Constitution muster, just like Arizona’s House Bill 2779 from two years ago and your MLK Day ban, keep passing them Arizona and the rest of us will continue to challenged them in a court of law and you will fail again (and yes we will Boycott Arizona). Their phony patriotism is sickening; they are just racists going by another name. We all know you are just itching to put a sheet on their head? Let’s face it the Republicans had eight years to deal with health care, immigration, climate change and financial oversight and governance and they failed. It appears that the Republican Party is only good at starting wars (two in eight years, with fat contracts to friends of Cheney/Bush) but not at winning wars as seen by the continuing line of body bags that keep coming home. The Republicans party will continue turned inward to their old fashion obstructionist party (and their Confederacy appreciation roots) because they continue to allow a small portions (but very loud portion) of their party of “birthers, baggers and blowhards” to rule their party. I will admit that this fringe is very good at playing “Follow the Leader” by listening to their dullard leaders, Beck, Hedgecock, Hannity, O’Reilly, Rush, Savage, Sarah Bailin, Orly Taitz, Victoria Jackson, Michele Bachmann and the rest of the Blowhards and acting as ill programmed robots (they have already acted against doctors that perform abortions). The Birthers and the Tea party crowd think they can scare, intimidate and force others to go along with them by comments like “This time we came unarmed”, let me tell you something not all ex-military join the fringe militia crazies who don’t pay taxes and run around with face paint in the parks playing commando, the majority are mature and understand that the world is more complicated and grey than the black and white that these simpleton make it out to be and that my friend is the point. The world is complicated and people like Hamilton, Lincoln, and Roosevelt believed that we should use government a little to increase social mobility, now it’s about dancing around the claim of government is the problem. The sainted Reagan passed the biggest tax increase in American history and as a result federal employment increased, but facts are lost when mired in mysticism and superstition. For a party that gave us Abraham Lincoln, it is tragic that the ranks are filled with too many empty suits and the crazy Birthers who have not learned that the way our courts work is that you get a competent lawyer, verifiable facts and present them to a judge, if the facts are real and not half baked internet lies, then, and only then, do you proceed to trial. The Birthers seem to be having a problem with their so called “facts”. Let’s face it no one will take the Birthers seriously until they win a case, but until then, you will continue to appear dumb, crazy or racist, or maybe all three. I heard that Orly Taitz now wants to investigate the “Republican 2009 Summer of Love” list: Assemblyman, Michael D. Duvall (CA), Senator John Ensign (NV), Senator Paul Stanley (TN), Governor Mark Stanford (SC), Board of Ed Chair, and Kristin Maguire AKA Bridget Keeney (SC), she wants to re-establish a family values party, that’s like saying that the Catholic Church cares about the welling being of children in their care, too late for that. Yee Haw!

By announcing this, Strickland just put out the welcome sign for any illegal aliens leaving Arizona. He also doesn’t think that Ohio has an illegal alien problem. Why doesn’t he ask the Butler County 64 yr old rape/kidnapping victim of the 14 yr old illegal alien if she agrees with him.

Mexico;s immigration law’s are ten times more harsh than ours ever thought about being, that is point one——Mexico is richer by far than the USA, in natural resources, the building blocks to make a sucessful nation, but after 2000 years, they have failed., that is point number two.

All you people blaming the fed gov, are you not the same people that want gov out of your life and are against big gov? More teapot craziness, either you want big gov or you do not, make up your mind. Like a lot of others have said, stop companies from hiring people that are here illegally, and problem solved. Why is it you AZ supporters need a law to do what is already a law, just enforce the already illegal hiring of illegals. Support the constitution you are always pointing to. Good work Ted, support the USA and the constitution.

The Az law isn’t even in effect yet and a Latino trucker was handcuffed and arrested in Phoenix at a weigh station for not having his immigration papers, though he did provide his commercial driver’s license. Why didn’t he have his immigration papers? Because he is a US citizen, born in the US. This story was on Channel 3 in Arizona. I hope he sues the sh— out of Arizona. It IS racial profiling!

Illegals in Ohio? Ohh my -15 years ago that place didn’t have one illegal to be found, moved out to Omaha and thought I just drove into little Mexico. There are more illegal Mexicans here then you think across this country, talk about a terrorist threat, there is one that goes un noticed.

I have to disagree with you NW Ohio. If the illegals don’t have jobs they will most assuredly start getting welfare. The only true answer is strict enforcement of immigration laws in this country.Everyone needs to look at Mexico’s laws on immigration and how they are enforced.Isn’t it funny the Mexican govt. wants their people to be able to come here whenever they want? Yet they will deport you or put you in prison for up to 2 yrs if you’re an illegal in their country.Second offense can get you up to 10 yrs in prison there. What’s wrong with this picture? DEPORT all illegals and secure our borders.

Told you it would never pass. Illegals are a protected class in Ohio and most of the country. Strickland, Sherrod Brown and the rest of the democrats do not like Americans. They especially don’t like independent freedom loving Americans. They want people they can control. They are power hunger and love their plantation politics. And apparently they hate Black Americans and Hispanic Americans because those are the people hurt the most by illegals. I don’t think they want Black Americans working. They want to keep them dependent on them so that they will keep voting for democrats. Slavery is a live and well in the democrat party. That is why they are always accusing Republicans of being racist. They claim republicans are so that they can hide who the real racists are - the democrats.

People are so stuipid. Quit assuming there will be racial profiling. The law specifically prohibits that. You can only check someones status if they are stopped for something else. Try to go to Mexico without proper documents. You will end up in jail. Uninformed people is how we got in the mess we are in since Obama got elected

Enforce laws against employers knowingly hiring illegals (or being careless about not doing background checks) and the “immigration problem” will disappear as the illegals will no longer have jobs. It is not the illegals’ fault but one of the employer. No jobs no illegals.

Pass a law if needed here. The Arizona law is no more restrictive than the federal law it copies. The reason Arizona passed its own law is because the feds don’t enforce immigration laws.

The new hospital in Middletown was raided during construction and you don’t have enough fingers AND toes to count all of the illegals found working on the job. And when this law takes effect in Az. the illgal aliens will just move to another state that doesn’t have the same law. Therefore, every state needs to follow Az. gutsy example.

It may cause more racial profiling but there is every reason to have that “racial profiling”. Those Hispanics who are legal shouldn’t care about showing a card to prove they are legal. I don’t however agree that anyone illegal should just be thrown out. America needs to institute some way illegals can become citizens, so they are paying taxes and living here in the lives most of them have worked hard for, legally.

Employers should verify employees are legal. The problem with the Arizona law is the likihood of racial profiling, for how else will police determine who is suspicious? Our country is richer because of the diverse backgrounds of our people. The Arizona law is a slap in the face to what America stands for.
