Ohioans one step closer to being allowed to carry guns in bars, restaurants
Concealed carry permit holders would be allowed to carry their guns into bars and restaurants that sell alcoholic beverages under legislation approved 23-10 on Thursday, May 27, by the Ohio Senate.
Senate Bill 239 now goes to the Ohio House.
The permit holder would be allowed to carry the gun in bars and restaurants as long as he or she was not drinking.
The bill also removes requirements that guns carried by permit holders in motor vehicles be kept out of sight in locations such as glove compartments.
Sen. Shannon Jones, R-Springboro, sponsor of the bill, said more than 40 other states already permit permit concealed carry in bars and restaurants.

I’ve carried concealed for the last 30 years. The only times I don’t are when metal detectors are an issue. I don’t have a CCW permit and never will. I should not have to ask permission of my government to legally defend myself. A better crime deterent would be for everyone to carry in the open. Lastly, it’s better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

I’d like to say that I believe in the 2nd Amendment & I work in some of the crime areas in the Miami Valley (Salem Ave. areas) I carry a firearm everyday espeacially over there. It’s no big deal, unless you want to do me harm, I hope you don’t but over in that area all bets are off. Everyone in the State of Ohio better get use to firearms cause thay are here to stay and this law WILL pass and go on the books of the ORC

I can see by reading several of the posts that there is a great deal of misunderstanding, ignorance, and just outright anti gun sentiment out there. The bill would permit restaurant carry in establishments that serve alcohol, not bars. CHL holders are the last bunch that would risk a felony. Why go through the training and rigorous background checks if their intention wasn’t to be responsible? It’s the criminal element who has no regard for the law and they are the very reason we carry. Paranoid? Why should I be? I’m carrying……….

This country which is full of drug addicts and drunks should be very fearful of idiots packing a gun. The Constitution needs updated. Laws that are 235 years old are outdated and bizarre. (Laughable) is a better word. I can see it now. Daddy gets drunk at the local bar, comes home and leaves the guns on the front seat of the pick up truck. Ten year old boys blows the head off the neighbor kid. Hide and watch.

I have NEVER been in a position, especially at a neighborhood place, where I wish I had a gun. I don’t know ANYONE who I would call competent to carry a gun. I DEFINITELY can’t bring my family to a restaurant that allows handguns. The proliferation of guns leads to people shooting each other over parking spaces (true crime), and contributes to crimes against police officers. Finally, discretion is the better part of valor, so all of you yodeling yokels don’t meet anyone’s definition.

Well, Larry, I see you’re a practicing mass-population psychologist. You think we’re all nuts. Fine, your opinion. Just tell me the answers to these two questions: 1. Are you more afraid of the person who’s carrying a concealed firearm in a bar but not drinking (even though off duty cops are carrying theirs and ARE drinking) or are you more afraid of the drunk who just left the bar and gets behind the wheel of his car. 2. When did I give up the right to defend myself? If the bar doesn’t want me to bring a firearm into their establishment, they can tape a “No guns” sign to the door and I won’t bring it in. Just remember, Larry, when seconds count, the police are only minutes away…

@guns kill people— It is totally legal to open carry as you suggest. But, when sheeple see somebody carrying openly they call the police. Nobody wants to be harassed by police for exercising their constitutional rights. So we choose to carry concealed. The police prefer this. Fewer inducing panic (false) charges that way. Good idea though.

Nice distortion DDN. The bill specifically states that you can carry in a restaurant that serves alcohol as long as you aren’t drinking and aren’t in the part that is specifically for drinking. It doesn’t allow you to carry in a bar. Can you start hiring people who can actually read?

People with conceal carry licenses are law abiding, decent citizens who are exercising their right to protect themselves and family. They pass background checks. I’d rather have a gun in their hands when I’m eating at a restaurant than someone else who has bad intent. Anyone who is concerned about the matter should speak with someone who has a conceal carry license and they would perhaps have their fears or worries allayed. I think calling license owners ‘rednecks’ is an erroneous, ignorant categorization. Get to know some before you speak.

Contrary to common sense, the opposition to the concealed carry amendment came disproportionately from black Senators representing largely urban and inner-city communities. Since crime has such a devastating effect on these communities, one would think that those who purport to represent them would desire to empower the honest and law abiding citizens of these areas, giving them the ability to defend themselves against the tide of violence and lawlessness. The specious and disingenuous reasoning of those who stood against passage of this amendment is at best puzzling.

Concealed Carry works! In 2003 the year before concealed carry was legal in Ohio ther were 6479 violent crimes in The Cincy metro area. In 2009 there were 3976 violent crimes. This 61% drop in violent crime happened at a time when police forces were laying off and the economy was tanking. The thuggs out there know more and more people are carrying. That is the number one reason violent crime is down. Look at the FBI statistics against the legalization of concealed carry!

I can’t help but be amazed at the number of people who say they feel safer in public when only the criminals are the ones who are carrying guns. Here is a recent fact, violent crime is down in Ohio, is it because the economy is so bad that criminals can’t afford bullets or is it because criminals can no longer feel safe in the knowledge they are the only one in the place with a gun? I guess it could be that people are finally becoming human, doubtful but possible. When Ohio passed the smoking ban I started taking my dining business out of state since I like to enjoy a cigarette after eating. So I think that if I was afraid of the good guys carrying guns I would just lock myself in a closet. If you have ever stood behind me in line at the bank or grocery you were next to a good guy carrying a gun, sorry I scared you.

People! Get a frickin’ grip! If you need to carry a gun for whatever legitimate reason, then carry one. If you don’t need to carry one, then don’t carry one just because it’s your right. Carrying a gun for no other reason than to make a political statement just makes you look like a fanatic idiot. In ohio, you can legally open carry in most places. If you want to carry concealed, you can do that too with a modest investment in some training and a background check. People making generalizations about owning guns being related to male endowment are also idiots. And Nate, few people carry “revolvers” anymore (they only hold six rounds). Most people carry semi-automatic handguns because they are slimmer and can be concealed easier. Get your frickin’ terminology right.
