Poll: Obama approval sinks to lowest ever as independents defect
President Barack Obama’s approval rating has sunk to its lowest level among registered voters across the country in a new Quinnipiac University Poll released on Wednesday, July 21.
In the poll, 48 percent disapproved of Obama’s performance as president, compared to 44 percent who approved. In May, 48 percent approved and 43 disapproved. Back in July 2009, Obama still was on a political honeymoon, with 57 percent approval and 33 percent disapproval.
Also, the poll found Obama losing 39-36 percent to an unnamed Republican in 2012.
Independents deserted Obama in the poll. This group disapproved of his performance, 52-38 percent and by a 37-27 percent margin said they’d vote for a Republican contender in 2012.
The poll found no love for Congress. By a 59-31 percent spread, they disapproved of the job Democrats in Congress are doing and by a 59-29 percent margin disapproved of what congressional Republicans are doing.
One bright spot for Obama in the poll - voters like him better than former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the 2008 GOP vice presidential candidate and potential 2012 presidential hopeful.
They gave Obama a 49 percent (favorable) to 45 percent (unfavorable) rating. Palin came out negative on favorability - 49 percent (unfavorable) to 35 percent (favorable).
Still, the poll results posed potential problems for the president.
“In politics a month is a lifetime and we have 28 months until November of 2012,” Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, said in a press release. “But politicians with re-elect numbers at 40 percent bear watching.”
The poll was taken from July 13 to Monday, July 19 with 2,181 registered voters and had a margin of error of plus or minus 2.1 percentage points.

I wonder where the “independents” are supposedly defecting to. That isn’t mentioned. Be interesting to see how far off the endless polls are when election day is over. Or maybe we’ll all just stay home and hide under our beds. That will help. Someone. I suppose.

“I think the ‘majority’ want no part of the democrats ‘social agenda’.” I agree with you, but neither do I think the majority of Americans want the Republicans’ agenda. Obama is running the debt higher and higher, but before that Bush ran it up high as well. And, both parties pushed for things like NAFTA that have been disastrous for our balance of trade and American workers. Neither party seems to want to address the illegal immigration problem and secure our borders. All either party seems intent on doing is opposing the other and winning a few more elected seats. We have a dysfunctional govt., and both Dems and Repubs are to blame.

You’re right Bob, I don’t know you but your words sure ring of a partisan nature to me and your reply is simply not factual in my opinion. Or am I allowed to voice that? I actually agree with you on some of your points regarding the GOP, but to blame them for the deficit or sending jobs overseas? I believe the Dems are in charge and have been for three years now. The very things you accuse the GOP of seem to be exactly what the dems are now giving us. Thank God they are saying no to the democrats. I would think given your subsequent replies that you be thankful as well. I think the “majority” want no part of the democrats “social agenda”. How else should I have interpreted those comments?

John: You don’t know me, so don’t try to put words in my mouth. I said nothing in support of Obama or the Dems. What I wrote was that NEITHER party represents the will of the bulk of Americans. Republicans used to advocate fiscal responsibility, freedom of religious expression, defense of individual rights, and defense of our country, but no more. They helped send American jobs overseas, they ran up the national debt to ridiculous levels, stood by while long-time religious symbols were shuttered from view, and are now catering for votes by not enforcing American laws and our borders. They don’t look much different from the Dems now. How you read into that my supposed endorsement of Obama and the Dems . . only you know why.

John: You don’t know me, so stop trying to put words in my mouth. I did not write anything in support of Obama or the Dems. I oppose most of their agenda, but the Repubs aren’t much better. They have abandoned conservative traditions such as fiscal responsibility, and defending religious expression, individual freedoms and defense of our borders. What I wrote was not in support of either party, but rather that the two parties are very similar now AND not representing the views of the bulk of Americans. That is what I wrote — I don’t know what fairy tale you were in.

Bob540, I had a huge chuckle reading your post about being a long time republican voter. The comments you made such as “rich”, “wealthy”, “powerful” along with the assertion that the republicans don’t care about the “social agenda desired by the majority” was so blatantly disingenuous if it were true and reeked of wealth envy. Soiunded like talking points straight out of the White House and Saul Alinsky’s playbook to me. The part I found most amusing was your assertion of a majority wanting the community organizer’s social agenda. You might try checking out some polling before making such statements in the future. Your tale of transformation just lost all it’s credibility…

I have voted Republican for most of the past 30 years because I believed they represented the social agenda I favor more than the Democrats. I have not believed either party really had the best interests of the general public in mind. All of these major pols are rich guys, with rich friends and contributors, and they do what it takes to stay wealthy and powerful. Now, the Republicans have shown they also care nothing about the social agenda desired by a majority of Americans. Again and again, they thwart the will of the people and seek to pit Americans against each other. For, a feuding populace is too distracted to see what the wealthy elite are really doing, and they are more easily controlled.

who cares. The tea party and the party of no got what they wanted. They have been wanting to take this president and the democrats down since 2008. They are negative and loud, and have basically threatened in the streets saying things like “next time we’ll come with our guns.” The only thing they ever cared about was scoring political points instead of compromise and gettting work done. The independents and the mainstream media are being duped and affected by the negativity. They will be sorry if they vote these repubicans back in. The same mess we are digging ourselves out of will happen again.

Perhaps some folks finally realize that they were duped and the man doesn’t have the capabilities to manage a Dairy Queen, let alone the Executive Branch of the Federal Government. Folks voted for unicorns, rainbows and lofty speeches, not reality. I’m happy to see some folks realizing their error. A lot of folks like to parrot that famous quote about getting the government we deserve. Even with our ignorant, American Idol-watching public, even we don’t deserve THIS government. REMEMBER in NOVEMBER! Fire ‘em ALL! BOTH parties.

Becky…To paraphrase Lloyd Bentsen to Dan Quayle in the 1988 vice presidential debates - Barack Obama is no Ronald Reagan. The Wall Street Reform bill is like Paris Hilton - looks great, little substance.

“…the unconditional supply of social benefits to those who were thought incapable of coping undermined the incentive to work and undercut the family unit. It promoted habits of idleness and delinquency. It permitted single-parenthood to become a financially sustainable, alternative way of life. By undermining the self-respect of so many of the most vulnerable members of society — the respectable poor struggling for decency against the odds — the dependency culture weakened society as a whole.”

On the other hand Reagan’s approval at this period was 44% also. And he won a 2nd term. You can look up past president’s polls at gallup.com. 44% is not bad at all when you consider the state of the economy and all that’s going wrong.

It shouldn’t be a surprise that the M O R O N Prez is slipping in the polls. If you continue to take a direction that the majority of American’s disagree with —> then Duh, you ain’t Mr Popular. To all those getting Uncle Bama’s handouts in the form of additional schooling, extended unemployment benefits, etc — you should be thanking me. I’m the tax payer who providing them the monies to GIVE to you. All I get is less. Sounds fair as long as it’s for the better of all (except me). Perfect logic? NOT. Democrats are killing our way of life. The prying into our private lives is just starting.

@November Voter, Thank you!!! Party doesn’t matter anymore. All either side does is bash the other. Show us what your ideas are and quit bashing your opponent. Do you not have anything to show for yourself? Give us proof of why you are the best candidate. Wait, nevermind, we will not see that…..

@Laura, FYI-I can read and why do you attack my comments when I am giving my own opinion? I chose to go to school to better myself in the eyes of future employers whenever the job market improves. By the time 2012 comes around I will have my Master’s Degree. The only thing you have to show for yourself is ignorance towards people like me.

I want that Hope and Change we all had when Cheney was President, no unemployment, business was booming, interest rates were low, everyone could buy a house AND pay for it monthly with no proble. I had a substancial savings and my 401K was doing great, and I had job security. Our Congress and Senate actually did something for “the American People”.

Yes, the key word here is “pass.” If Congress doesn’t pass the law, there is no law to sign. The President does not PASS laws, contrary to rodentbrain’s post.

I agree that things aren’t going well - but the Republicans/Tea Party folk have not done anything to convince me to vote for them. They have to do more than just bash Obama - it would be bad regardless of who’s president.

While I,m happy that Laura want’s to continue her education, I think it’s only wise to realize that self reliance is a very important virtue. Don’t expect the almighty government to provide all for you. Remember a government big enough to give you all, is big enough to take all.

Obama is passing all kinds of laws!? When did this happen? I could have sworn only Congress can pass laws! Rodentperson, if one had to pass a civics test to post on this blog, you could not make comments here. It’s three branches of government, judical, executive, and legislative. The legislative branch makes laws. I suggest you study up and try again for that GED!

Obama & his administration are so far left of mainstream America, have repeatedly demonstrated incompetence in most matters, and believe the private sector is the bane of their existence. That he has any noticeable support is a surprise to me, and he will be punished starting this November!

Obama’s a communist, he’s passing all kinds of laws that the majority of Americans don’t agree with since we’re not yet a communist nation, so yes of course he’s falling in the polls. Duh!
