Poll: Ohio voters want to keep Bush tax cuts
Sixty-two percent of Ohio likely voters want to extend the so-called Bush tax cuts that are set to expire on Dec. 31, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll released on Sunday, Aug. 22.
The level of support in Ohio is 8 points above the finding on the national level, the poll found.
In the Ohio poll, 30 percent of the likely voters believe the tax cuts should expire at the end of 2010.
Also, the Ohio poll found that, given the choice, 52 percent preferred extending the tax cuts for all Americans. Thirty eight percent favored excluding the wealthy in the extension.
The telephone survey, done by automated calling, was conducted on Aug. 16, 2010, with 750 likely voters and had a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

I am a democrat and have always worked, you idiot. The Republicans have brainwashed people. For people making 250 thousand dollars, their taxes would not go up much. But, if you make over a million, they will. That is the problem. The tax base is at the 2000 level. !0 years behind. Those high wage earners have been fleecing the middle class for years. Raise their taxes.

Is it Mass Hypnosis or Brainwashing? Has our ability to process facts and ideas and think critically vanished completely? Wealth disparity in America is spiraling out of control and absurd right wing propaganda frightens people into believing this is socialism. As the difference between the very wealthy and the poor increases myriad problems get worse. The economy becomes unstable, general quality of life declines (crime, sanitation, public health, infrastructure etc.). Even the elite few would see a decline in quality of life as their surroundings become increasingly grim. America especially needs to find ways to curb wealth disparity to ensure free and fair elections, fair commerce and justice under the law. Higher taxes for the wealthy and large corporations are more than justified due to their reliance and excessive usage of public amenities and their overall impact on the environment. This has been understood for 100 years, but now our burgeoning ignorance has brought us here. Morons whining about taxes and crying socialism, at a time when we are further away from anything resembling socialism than we have ever been in our history. This endeavor will turn the U. S. A. into a third world nation in no time.

Nobody at Rasmussen asked my opinion. I still maintain the same stance I took 10 years ago, the tax cuts would drive the budget into deeper deficits and saddle my children and grandchildren with an increasing debt load. Before the tax cuts were passed we had budget surpluses that should have been used to pay down the debt and restore our economic prosperity. After the tax cuts, the surpluses disappeared. Then, as the government took in less tax revenue, the Republican Congress approved obscene increases in spending. To add to our economic folly we got embroiled in 2 wars, without raising the funds to pay for them. I favor letting the tax cuts expire and requiring all future Congressional candidates to take some basic economics and accounting classes. Maybe we will finally get some representation in Washington that can use a calculator.

Bush provided the largets tax cuts in U.S. history…also the most expensive. Bush is ALSO repsonsible for the LOWEST job creation of ANY 2 term president since WWII. Maybe the tax cuts should have been aimed at the small business’s of this country and not the major corporations…who ultimately did not invest their money HERE!

People, people. You can’t just select the kinds of spending you like/don’t like, ie. defense vs. welfare. Of course Obama and Dems believe in cuts — weren’t you thrilled at the announcement of library closings? Bill Clinton balanced the budget by raising taxes and making deep cuts at the same time. You pay your household bills, correct? Same thing. This is what shocks me — you still think Bush’s economic policies were successful. Here’s a thought about wealth distribution — it’s not all their money. They overreached, and something has to be done about it. We have to dedicate ourselves to preserving the middle class way of life, otherwise the gap between the wealthy and the poor keeps growing, and not in most people’s favor.

All this liberal angst over the tax cuts is very enlightening. No mention of controlling spending unless it is a swipe at our military expenditures. No mention of viable solutions unless it is just soaking the “rich”. Wealth envy is alive and well along with an entitlement mentality. But I also sense a growing desperation in their realization that the progressive agenda is failing miserably and thus they react with insult and anger. Thing is they are meeting a ever growing majority that is more angry than they and have had enough with progressive, social engineering.

I believe it was Jefferson who said something to the effect of when people realize they can vote themselves money from the public trough, our nation is doomed. Well, they have, and they are. Obama tapped into this, and he and Queen Michelle are riding it out. However, the backlash will be severe. It will be many decades before our nation trusts another black man to be president. It’s a shame too, because there are many conservative black men who could lead us back to fiscal responsibility, which would lower the debt, and allow private interprise to flourish, creating jobs and greatly reducing many of the ills progressives complain about. But then again, the progressives would deny conservatism had anything to do with it, and then demand to be given positions of power through the courts. Shame on them.

A question or two for PJM… What “didn’t work” about the Bush tax cuts? Please explain. Also, do you think that controlling spending has any merit? And I am not talking about defense expeditures. One last one, why is it you feel you have any right to anyone else’s money?

The backlash against progressives and liberals will begin on 2 Nov, and will last as long as it takes. Those fools who believe it is their right to redistribute the wealth of people smarter and harder-working than themselves will feel the pain. As Smokey the Bear said once, “only you can prevent poverty by making better decisions with your life.” When you refuse to make those better decisions, why do you demand I support you? Our nation was built on capitalist ideas, and on freedom and liberty. The progressives can not succeed under capitalism, or freedom, or liberty. They must destroy those, and replace them with socialism, government dependency, and tyranny. Why must they do this? Answer - so they can control your wealth. Why do you let them? Answer - Because you are too friggin lazy (and stupid) to control your own life. The backlash is coming. Either you will be ready for it, or you won’t. Either way, progressives will be stopped!

This is why liberals and progressives should not be allowed to vote. They are idiots!! They are too stupid to realize spending creates deficits. Tax cuts actually generate more revenue to the government, so they are “paid for.” How do you pay for a tax cut? REDUCE SPENDING. How many democrats propose that? NONE! They buy votes by handing out free stuff to as many people as they can. People today believe everything they want or could use is a right, guaranteed by the taxpayer. Shoot, everything a rich person has is now considered a right, and the poor demand the taxpayer pay for it for them. GET OFF YOUR LAZY BUTTS AND TAKE SOME RESPONSIBILITY! Stop blaming the “rich” for your decision to be poor. If you don’t want to be poor anymore, MAKE BETTER DECISIONS, DUMB@$$. You progressives sicken me. I would grant you that the jury is still out on the economic stimulus package, but not in the sense you’re suggesting. The question is will it be enough to stave off a rock bottom scenario. Once again, you got everything you wanted under Bush, including tax cuts we could not afford — and it didn’t work. How do you defend that? You’re afraid the “wealthy” people will leave, so you’ll pay them to stay??? Did it ever occur to you that corps use more public resources than the rest of us? Including the US Armed Forces.

Since some of you clearly slept through basic math, let me help you out on your ‘tax cuts for the rich’ nonsense: Taxes at the top level went from 39.6% to 35%, which is an 11.6% decrease. Taxes on the lowest level went from 15% to 10% which is a 33% decrease. The levels in between decreased as income increase as well. In what world does giving almost three times more in tax breaks to the bottom feeders equate to ‘tax cuts for the rich’?

You will see just enough tax relief passed to buy the necessary votes in the mid-term elections. One must understand the elite Washington DC mindset….1) that they are smarter than everyone else and know what’s best for us and 2) that hosing the so called “rich” makes absolutely no difference in the voting booth as the so called “rich” are unlikely to support the left wing agenda anyway (no votes lost). In addition, the short sighted benefit of hosing the so called “rich” is the left winning additional hearts and minds of the so called “non-rich” (additional votes gained). They refuse to accept that the so called “rich” are the ones who create jobs. By hosing them, they will respond by dumping more people onto the public unemployment roles and thus steepening America’s economic death spiral. They also fail to understand that the definition of so called “rich” is a moving target. Once you deplete the resources of and/or drive the so called “rich” from American shores (yes, they have the resources to pick up and leave) the definition will morph to include the top levels of those left behind. In the limit (for you math majors) this will eventually boil down to the currently so called “non-rich” now being the so called “rich”. Can you say economic collapse? America is in deep crisis. The economic crisis pales by comparison to the spiritual and moral decay being experienced from the top levels of our government and down through the family households. Read the true American history and see that this country has a Christian foundation and the Declaration of Independence, Constitution and Bill of Rights were all based on these principles. There is only one person powerful enough to save America and He proved this on the Cross. Pray for America, she desperately needs it.

While the fact people are not buying may have some effect on investment, the bigger issue is the uncertainty created by this Prez policies. What business of any size would want to invest when healthcare is almost guaranteed to rise due to the healthcare bill, no one knows what the FinRef bill will do (even that author admits that) and most those who could invest expect tax increases. None of these are policies which can stimulate the economy and create growth. Again, we see comments about closing loopholes on corporations. Each of us pay corporate tax - it is just passed on so what your advocating is an indirect tax increase for all, one of the little tricks of the trade for politicians. I agree with getting rid of loopholes but more in the sense of a flat or fair consumption tax to replace our current system. Also while the deficit left by Bush is real, the doubling down on it by this Prez is also real so please, be honest for a change will ya?

Tax cuts for nearly every American will remain in place. Only the tax cuts for the wealthy will expire. Bush is the one who put an expiration limit on his own cuts. Folks can’t say that they’re worried about the deficit and then want Obama to extend a cut that will only further increase the deficit. As for economy stimulation: the folks who live paycheck to paycheck are the ones who spend and keep the economy running. The folks who have an excess of money, usually save it. They are not idiots starting or expanding businesses when they know that the average folks can’t afford to buy right now.

I really hate to keep asking this but raising taxes on the top 1% or so in a best case scenario will garner about 150B over 3 years or 50B a year. Thats assuming these folks don’t shelter their money or do some income shifting which likely will happen and revenues will actually be less. Using this year’s debt of approx 1.4 Trillion we are left with 1.35 Trillion in debt. The combined wealth of the top 400 wealthiest in the country is 1.5 Trillion. That would lower the deficit from 14 to 13 Trillion. Then what? How are we to deal with the 5-7 Trillion in unfunded mandates lying in our future? Rather than seeking a pound of flesh from the rich which only makes some feel good when will we realize we are dealing with a spending problem? Even if the economy recovers, we are still dealing with a spending problem.

Fox News and Wall Street Journal parent company News Corp donated $1 million to the Republican Governors Association in June, Bloomberg BusinessWeek reported. The media conglomerate, controlled by Chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch, took advantage of the unlimited donations corporations can give to governors’ associations (from Bloomberg BusinessWeek): Big Democratic givers for the governors’ races include two Washington-based labor groups, the Service Employees International Union, which donated $1.1 million, and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, which contributed $3.3 million

Newscorp, the owner of Fox News, donated $1 million to the republican party. Fox’s parent donated nothing to the democratic party. Sound like “fair and balanced” is just another right wing lie (like reducing deficits) and that Fox news is nothing more than the propaganda arm of the republican party. Obama inherited from Bush and the republicans who controlled government for 6 consecutive years two failed trillion dollar wars, and a ruined, looted economy. Now the right blames Obama for trying to fix the mess with government spending to stimulate the economy as he also holds the bag for paying for the trillion dollar Bush wars. Obama gets less than two years before he is prematurely judged by the right as a failed president. Bush had eight years and we KNOW that he was a failed president. The hypocrisy is so thick that you can cut it with a knife.

I agree with Greatly Concerned. Our country now has an unprecedented debt which must be repaid. I believe the Bush tax reduction should stay in effect for those earning less than $250K and that it should be eliminated from those earning earning over the $250K. This is not a tax reduction for the wealthy, only putting them back in tax brackets they once were. I firmly believe in the “trickle up” effect, not vice versa. The more the middle class and lower have to spend the more money will go back into the economy, thus helping, not hendering the wealthy.

The Bush tax cuts don’t just offer tax relief to the wealthiest Americans. They offer it to just about anyone who pays federal income taxes. Their scheduled demise next year will raise the tax bill of nearly every taxpayer, unless Congress makes changes and the president jumps on board. Higher Tax Rates for All You may have been led to believe that only individuals in the top two brackets will face higher federal income taxes when the Bush cuts go bye-bye. Not true! Unless Congress takes action and President Obama goes along, rates will go up for everyone — not just a sliver of the wealthiest Americans. The current six rate brackets of 10%, 15%, 25%, 28%, 33% and 35% will be replaced by five new brackets with the higher rates of 15%, 28%, 31%, 36% and 39.6%. Just a few months ago, it seemed like a safe bet that Congress would make a fix to keep the existing 10%, 15%, 25% and 28% rate brackets to help out lower and middle-income folks. That bet is now looking iffy. http://finance.yahoo.com/taxes/article/110005/how-the-expiring-bush-tax-cuts-affect-you?mod=taxes-advice_strategy

Why can the liberal Democrats get away with eliminating foolish tax cuts on the rich? Because they have convienced the masses that a Socialist Government is good for them. But when Obama started his campaign he defined the rich as making over $250,000. Then it became $200,000 and now is further reduced. His new defination of rich is anyone that still has a job. So he will only tax the rich. But the true fact is that the top 5% of Americans, yes they are rich by anyones defination, pay 95% of the taxes. You can read here that the rich don’t really pay taxes..BS. Thats a liberal lie just like most of the Democratic comments on here. Thats the sheep restating the Party lies. Lets take a pool here. How many of the Bush bashers paid tax last year? Remember welfare payments, food stamps and free medical care are not taxed. Lets ask the same question again. Second question, did you get a huge tax return, even though you didn’t pay taxes because you have several kids? Thats called the earned income credit. Another word for it is more Welfare. Maybe the original laws in America for voting were good. You had to be a land owner and taxpayer to vote. Right now, with so many welfare voters, we could see even more stupid ideas about taxing the rich to level the wealth in America. But guess what, you tax the rich too much and they aren’t rich anymore. Then where would you get your welfare checks?

It is amasing how many non-tax payers feel so strongly about ending the tax relief for the rich. Why, because they see how the debt is pilling up by the tax and spend liberal democrats in power right now. Why shouldn’t the rich pay even more? Why can’t we take that extra money and introduce more bills to give every man, woman and child on welfare a nice house and a new Caddie? Why, in a land of opportunity do we have teh largest welfare state in teh world? Why, because the liberal Democrats want our great nation to become a Socialist Nation. Does Socialism work? No. Why, because in a true Socialist Nation everyone works and gets the same rewards. Those same lazy slackers, who have been welfare dependent for generations, would not work in Socialist Country either. They believe it’s their RIGHT to live for free and let the rich pay all the taxes. It’s their RIGHT to free medical care, It’s their RIGHT to a good home, all paid for by the rich. So why do these welfare families even get the RIGHT to vote? Because this is a free society and we fight to maintain the real RIGHTS of Americans as defined in the Constitution. But guess what? The Constitution does not include any of the welfare demands, woops I meant RIGHTS.

The rich got most of Bush’s tax cuts. Most of the people that took part in the survey were likely not aware of that. His tax cuts were a big reason for the budget deficits that Obama inherited and Bush ran up the biggest deficits in US history: only preceded by Ronnie Ray-Guns!!! Americans would rather believe the lie than the truth. They would like to blame Obama for the econimic mess this country is on when it was the Reflublicans who created it. If the Reflublicans were still in office, they would have bailed out the Banks too: there was no alternative. As for the tax cuts there is one: The rich should pay their share: the Ruling Class/Power Elite has a gotten a free ride for way too long. It is absolutely despotic to make the ever diminishing middle class bear the brunt of the tax burder while the rich play the stock market. Our national debt is almost equal to the entire economy of the U.S. If you took every penny out of everybodys bank account or retirement account it would not be enough. You could only do that once and then its gone.

Anyone commenting that pays little to no federal taxes you need to mind your own business. Tax cuts help the economy period its a known fact. Eliminating the tax cuts will cause a second dip recession. The 401K is a very good idea to create presonal wealth. Pensions are no longer sustainable if you do not want any jobs left in the US. No business can afford to compete with the world market and pay people ridiculous pensions. If Obama was smart he would annouce he is keeping the tax cuts and the economy would begin to turn around.

The Rassmussan Poll has been conservative right leaning since the day it started. It’s a subsidery of Fox News. Of course it’s going to reflect this stance. Secondly, has anyone ever received a call from one of these groups. They hang up when you disagree with their point of view. Secondly, I can’t understand how all these people and tea party clowns are crying about the budget and deficits and say yes to the Bush tax cuts blowing a 853 millon dollar hole in the budget? Does that make any sense to anyone???

families take a big hit after the tax cut expires. over the past years a family would get back $1000 per child (up to 3) now when they expire a family gets only $500. Who favors giving away $500 to the government? Not me

Yeah, Bush and the neocon’s economic policies have been such a resounding success…like Reagan’s brilliant failed economic policies which started this nation on its current 30 year path of failure. Failures all. This poll speaks volumes about the ignorance of Ohio voters, who as we know voted twice for the chicken hawk warmongering team of Bush/Cheney. Dolts!

@ JEROMY, Those tax cuts are for every American who pays taxes. You must get your info from CNN or MSNBC. Also, the promise that no American who makes less than $250K will get a tax hike has already been broken. Were you aware that the deduction that you used to get for the amount that you pay into your healthcare is now gone. In addition, the value of your health care plan (as retired military w/ family, mine is valued at $47k) is now considered taxable income. At the end of 2011 it will become clear that this and many other measures were mistakes and if you repeal the entire bush tax cut package, everyone takes a hit. Especially small business.

The “bush tax cuts” (tax cuts that bush signed for, but OUR congress voted in) are tax cuts for everyone, up and down the line. The Left Wing Media likes to call them “tax cuts for the rich” because they result in more dollars of a tax cut for the rich. Of course they result in more dollars of a tax cut. THEY MAKE MORE DOLLARS. The tax cuts give a larger percentage of tax cuts to the poor. To eliminate these “bush” tax cuts is to punish small business which will result in a loss of jobs. HELLO!!! This is simple economics!!!

You know wealthcare is the issue of our time. We billionaires would like to personally thank all the support in making sure our pockets are overflowing. . Don’t let the socialists call you suckers, you deserve to be praised for being so patriotic. Keeping our profits healthy will require some sacrifice. Not on our part, of course.

Rasmussen is a VERY conservative polling organization. Take a look at their polls and you’ll see that the Rasmussen polls all just so happen to reflect the views of the G.O.P. and social conservatives. I don’t trust telephone polls anymore because they tend to call land lines. Who but the angriest and most misinformed of all Americans has a landline anymore ???

IRONY: most Ohioans are demographically lower middle class (or just broke) so the Bush tax cuts don’t apply to them. Ditto for the “Death Tax” that only affected 2%-5% of all Americans. Trickle down economics? It’s been a proven myth since at least the early 90’s.

I am in the market for a new car. My payment will be just over $300/month. The tax cut expiration will cost me $330/month in extra taxes. I’m waiting to purchase until the government decides what they are going to do with my money.

How can any of you use the excuse that “these tax cuts are not paid for”? It belongs to the person that earned, not the damned government. I make about 60k a year, and I remember having more in my paycheck when these tax cuts were implemented. I want to keep MY money, how about you?

I think they should tax personal income over 250,000/yr. They should not tax a business more at all. If your a small business owner and making 250k/yr or less and you can’t figure out how to get out of paying more in taxes you need a new accountant.

Of course we want to keep our own money. The top marginal rate is still too high even with the “Bush Cuts.” BTW- the tax cuts don’t need to be “paid for” the budget needs to be cut.

We need to Extend the tax cuts, or, we will ALL pay higher taxes. Even those making under $100,000 will pay thousands more in taxes per year if we don’t extend the Bush tax cuts… it affects Everyone, not just the rich.

Trickle down 101 - A man earns 10 million dollars - pays 48% to various entities in taxes - Still has 5.2 million - Buys a new house worth 1 million - Contractor makes 250K and employs 15 people who make 35K, contractor taxes equal 25% or 62500. Each employe pays about 3500 in taxes or 52500 total. Those employees and the contractor buy new cars, furniture and groceries, other people have jobs. More tax revenue is collected. If taxes on the ten million were 60 or 70 percent, less money would be available to the contractor, his employees and the people who make the goods they buy. Is that simple enough to understand?

TO say that the rich will just spend the money they save on taxes flies in the argument that the tax cuts don;t provide jobs. Of the rich buy new houses and cars, who makes them? People who got a job. And to answer the Deficit issue - A deficit results from SPENDING MORE THAN YOU HAVE. So the problem is? Oh, heck, I’m wasting my time, liberals don’t want to listen to logic, facts just get in the way.

Wow, Ohio is home to more ignorant poeple than the national average..surprise, surprise. These tax cuts have not been paid for and have added to the national debt along with the unpaid for wars and Ohio still wants to keep them. How have these tax cuts been going for you so far Ohio, how many jobs have been created since Bush and his croonies lined the pockets of the rich? The last time I checked Ohio still is Ohio, the laughing stock of the nation. All the tax cuts expiring would do is take them back to the same tax rate as when Clinton was in office, you now, the peroid when over 20 million jobs were created. Ohio is a wasteland of its former self…what a joke of a state.

Its absurd to think that lower taxes on the wealthy will lead to more jobs. While some may invest that money on their business, most will invest it on themselves…new cars, houses, etc. And I don’t have a problem with that, but lets not pretend that small business owners crave lower taxes simply so they can expand their businesses. Thats just naive.

It is a joke to think that $250K is wealthy. Many small businesses may make that much, but if they are taxed more, won’t expand business, hire new workers, put money into new equipment, etc.
