AG Cordray urges Craigslist to take down adult services section; cites “prostitution” ads

Attorney General Richard General Cordray on Tuesday, Aug. 24, joined a group of attorneys general is asking the craigslist online classified advertising service to immediately take down the Adult Services portion of the site.

The reason, according to Cordray: continued prostitution advertisements and concern about sex trafficking of children through the Adult Services section of the Web site.

“In our view, the company should take immediate action to end the misery for women and children who may be exploited and victimized by the ads,” Cordray said in a press release.

Susan MacTavish Best, Craigslist’s spokeswoman, released a statement that did not specifically say if the section would be taken down:

“We strongly support the Attorneys General desire to end trafficking in children and women, through the Internet or by any other means.

“We hope to work closely with them, as we are with experts at nonprofits and in law enforcement, to prevent misuse of our site in faciltiation of trafficking, and to combat such crimes wherever they appear, online or offline.”

This is a victimless crime. If a prostitute is underaged, then arrest her and the john. If they are both adults, who cares? If you don’t like the ads on craigslist, then don’t click on them. Prostitutes prevent violent crime by providing an outlet to those who have difficulties with the opposite sex. There is virtually no sexual assault in amsterdam, where prostitution is legal. Really, do you prudes have nothing better to do?

For those of you griping at this “intrusion” by the government - this isn’t just something going on between two consenting adults - that’s the point. It’s also pedophilia and sex trafficking in children. If you can’t get a woman any other way than to pay for one, do it the old-fashioned way.

Its not up to a fascist government piggie to tell Craigslist or anybody else what services they advertise. Consenting adults should be able to do whatever they like behind closed doors. That is Liberty. If you don’t like it, tough.

My Sarge, you are quite the naughty libertarian, eh?

I hope that CL stands up to yet another grandstanding, craven politician. Only because sex is involved and sex always generates headlines does this guy even care. The scams and robberies, etc., that are generated in CL’s other categories cause much more harm than the “adult” category but Cordray only wants to “shut down” the adult category. Why? Rank hypocrisy and craven political motives. Prostitution, like drugs, should be legal, safe, available and regulated.

I think Bob’s comment was tongue in cheek. Obviously Prostitutes are not born that way. I think Cordray is a bit misguided here. True, Craigslist posts adult ads, but so does many other websites (erosohio.com, backpage.com etc). The posting of the ad itself falls within the First Amendment rights. The ads GENERALLY dont specifically mention illegal acts, but it IS alledged. Craigslist has gotten a bad rep due to these and a couple of rip off schemes, but it is no better or worse than the sites I mentioned. (And there are a ton more sites that list pics of local hookers). BTW, I am not spilling any secrets here. We all know about them, they just get less press…what is the difference between these ads, and the ads in HIGH TIMES depicting drug paraphernalia and how to use it? Just a thought….

Although commendable, I do believe jobs and the economy should be the main focus right now.

Squirrellygirl, Cordray is the OHIO AG. He represents the state and has no connection to the national administration. All states have their own attorney generals and then the country has one too. Looks like it is time for you to revisit a high school government class.

WTF are you talking about, squirrely? Cordray IS the state AG, not the AG for the federal government. Bob, if you honestly believe that people are born a certain way, than you’ve got some other questions to answer, as in that stance eliminates any claims that people are born innocent and opens to door to saying that not only should abortion be an available option, but it should be required in some cases.

I think the AG should be concentrating on national issues, not interfering with state issues of the people. This administration is too short sighted to do what they need to do to get us out of the economic mess they put us in my overspending and overtaxing.

This is an outrage! Everyone knows prostitutes do not choose this lifestyle. Who in their right mind would CHOOSE to live this kind of life? Wake up America. Prostitutes were born this way and there is nothing we can do to change them. God created them this way and He loves them the same as He loves the rest of us. Do not judge others.
