Lawmakers seek public’s help to fill state budget hole
State lawmakers are seeking the public’s help in trying to come up with ways to fill a hole in the next state budget that could be as deep as $8 billion.
The bipartisan Ohio Budget Planning and Management Commission on Thursday, Aug. 26, launched a new Web site to collect information and identify potential solutions.
Click here for the Web site.
The Web site requires users to register and long in. It requests ideas that include a strategy for balancing the budget for fiscal years, 2012-2013. Fiscal year 2012 starts July 1, 2011.
Material can be submitted in a variety of formats and all information will be considered a public record, a press release said.
“The public input will be invaluable as we roll up our sleeves and move forward developing solutions,” State Rep. Vernon Sykes, D-Akron, a commission member said in the release.
State Sen. Shannon Jones, R-Springboro, also a member, agreed.
“Considering the significant challenges we are facing, members have a responsibility to keep an open mind and look at all possible solutions,” Jones said in the release

No one is claiming the wealthy or corporations are evil, but I hear plenty decrying government as evil and the stirring up unfounded fears of socialism. We have simply allowed corporations and the wealthy to have too much influence over our government, economy and legal system. The result of this undue power threatens our very democracy, it perverts our legal system and has skewed our economy away from small businesses in favor of huge multinational corporations. Has our ability to process facts and ideas and think critically vanished completely? How much money any person makes is not the issue. The critical factor is the disparity of income. As the difference between the very wealthy and the poor increases at the pace we are at myriad problems get worse. The economy becomes unstable, general quality of life declines (crime, sanitation, public health, infrastructure etc.). Even the elite few would see a decline in quality of life as their surroundings become increasingly grim. America especially needs to find ways to curb wealth disparity to ensure free and fair elections, fair commerce and justice under the law. Higher taxes for the wealthy and large corporations are more than justified due to their reliance and excessive usage of public amenities and their overall impact on the environment. This has been understood for at least 100 years, but now our burgeoning ignorance has brought us here. Morons whining about taxes and crying socialism, at a time when we are further away from anything resembling socialism than we have ever been in our history. These actions are threatening to turn the U. S. A. into a third world nation.

A majority of the Bush tax cuts, capital gains and inheritance tax benefit the top 10%. Today CEO’s make 260 TIMES as much as the average worker, 260 TIMES! This is more than 10 times as much as CEO’s made in the 60’s relative to the average worker! If you do the math CEO’s today make more money in ten weeks than the average worker would make in 50 years (age 20 to 70 a career). The wealthiest Americans now pay 17% in taxes. Tax cut for the wealthy and multinational corporations do not result in more jobs. Hasn’t anyone been paying attention for the last eight years? These guys take their money and ship jobs overseas, lobby congress to make sure laws work in their favor, donate to politicians and PACs to the same ends. They hire accountants to circumvent tax codes (pay little or no taxes). They hire the best lawyers to keep them out of trouble, even if they deserve to be locked up or pay reasonable settlements. How do these activities impact free and fair elections and free market competition? You tell me. To claim that this is socialism is simply idiotic. It is small businesses that need tax breaks. We need to offer incentives to American manufacturing and eliminate the tax advantage for outsourcing.

Why don’t all the whiners on this board come up with some civil constructive solutions? Your government is listening people, it’s time to step up to the plate with some serious ideas instead of partisan sniping.

At least the professional politicians that have put us in this hole with their big government, big taxes, more regulation, ideas have a grain of wisdom to ask our advice, though i doubt we will know it was ever offered. Like Squirrellygirl said, just cut all they’ve done to us and get back to basics and we will grow out of the hole.

Remember the movie where the guy built the ballfield “if you build it, they will come”—remember that movie? Well, my answer is cut the taxes, stop the crazy spending, and they will flock here with their businesses and hire people and people pay taxes. Hole fixed. It’s that simple. Vote smarter next time, and maybe we can get’erdone!
