Resolution to keep OSU-Michigan game tradition heading to legislature
There are a few things certain in life: death, taxes and Michigan-Ohio State football rivalry.
Death and taxes are still a go but whether the Wolverines and Buckeyes cap off the regular season together is in jeopardy now that the Big Ten Conference is adding Nebraska.
State Sen. Kevin Coughlin, R-Cuyahoga Falls, said Tuesday, Aug. 31, that he will introduce a resolution in the Ohio Senate to urge the Big Ten Conference to keep the Big Game as regular season final.
“Millions of Ohioans, Ohio State alumni, current and former Buckeye players, and fans around the world look forward to that Saturday afternoon in late November when the Buckeyes and the Wolverines meet on the field,” Coughlin said. “This season finale has become the greatest rivalry in sports history, and I believe it would be unfortunate to dilute one of college football’s most important traditions.”
It has been said that millions of Michiganians as well as University of Michigan alumni, fans and players also look forward to the game, although less so in recent years.
The two teams have played their game as the season finale since 1934.
“There are plenty of important issues for us to deal with in Ohio. But we can take a few minutes and express our concern that the Big Ten Conference is tinkering with something that many fans feel isn’t broken,” Coughlin said.

Has the big 10 even thought about the money the conference, especially the school, and the networks that air the game, will lose as a result. Ohio State Michigan tickets are the highest priced of the regular season. Not to mention the donations that come in from due to the football team, this game as the main catalyst. What are they thinking? My ohio bias aside, this game is legendary. Its the culmination of the whole season, for both teams, good or bad. I don’t see the monetary and traditional loss being worth the addition of cousin of the weasel.

This IS important people. And this has EVERYTHING to do with saving jobs / money. Do you even know how much revenue 1 home OSU game brings to Columbus business? Pea brain. This is EXACTLY what we hire our politicians to do.

Amazing that so many here in the rust belt are so obsessed with OSU football (maybe because there are no real pro sports teams here). Most OSU fans I’ve observed aren’t alumni of any college (lack HS diploma).

For the love of God. We have at a minimum,10% unemployment, food banks and social services are stressed to the maximum, we need jobs desperately, homeless shelters are bulging at the seams and this clown wants to waste time and effort introducing legislation on the Ohio State Michigan Game? I agree with Buckeye Fan. Keep the damn politics out of this and spend your time on the issues that will put us back to work and alleviate suffering. Freaking Ludicous.

I am a loyal Buckeye fan, but we pay the legislators to make decisions regarding important issues for everyone in the State—not just Buckeye fans. Focus on issues that will improve the economy and the availabilty of job opportunities.

@null, i was referencing the Big Ten conference, as that is who the legislator is trying to convince to keep the game at the end of the year according to the article

@nothingbetter, OSU is not a private business. That being said, I still think the legislators should keep out of this kind of stuff. Resolution or not, other states doing, doesn’t make it right. IMHO, this is a load of crap.

Please…..THIS IS A FOOTBALL GAME!! No one is concerned about the fans…..except the businesses that make out BIG TIME when the game is aired in their establishments. Please spend our tax dollars on something more worthwhile…like fixing the lousy school lunches or helping our schools in general.

@Debbie: You’re right, suggestions such as mine have been rejected many times over the years, but not soundly. They are based on misplaced “school spirit” and the attractions of the almighty dollar. The fact is, sports like football have no place in education at any level, elementary, secondary, or collegiate. They are a costly distraction from the serious business of getting each generation of students prepared for the real world, which is getting ever more unforgiving of American “bread and circus” pasttimes.

Whether it is right or not doesn’t matter. Government has no right and should not be concerned with what private businesses/organizations are doing. The same goes for Congress having to stick their noses in baseball and steriods. Since when did they become the regulating body for a private organization? Dont’t think I have read that anywhere in the Constitution as to the duty of the legislative branch

Folks, Get a grip!! State legislatures and the US Congress passes these type of resolutions all the time. A resolution is just that. Look up the word in the dictionary. It will pass in 2 minutes and is not law. I hope Michigan does the same thing. And by the way psychologists will tell you this type of thing is a healthy diversion from the pressures of life.

This is only a resolution, not a law. Both houses of the state legislature do this to honor people, events, express opinion - without the force of law. And the man is right. Ohio State and Michigan should be kept in the same division with their game being the last game of the division’s regular season. In this emerging era of ‘super’ conferences, this is what other rivalries have done, eg. Alabama vs Auburn, when the conference had to split into two divisions.

If nothing is done by our legislature, then they will be blamed as being “the one who let the big game get away” by their next opponent. Look, were blaming Strickland for losing jobs and LaBron James leaving, so this what we get when we want “OUR CANDIDATE” to win at all costs! So this just makes perfect sense. Get Real!

In these times of recession, football should be the last thing they are concerned about. We need less government intervention in our lives, and more effort put forth to bring jobs back to Ohio. That’s the only way that makes any sense to increase the tax revenue that they are so eager to squander. College football will get along just fine without politicians getting involved. Go Bucks!!!!!

To anyone who thinks the legislature has more important things to do, they have plenty of time for this and “important” things. And this is important, as college sports involnves millions of dollars and lots of people’s jobs. If there was some big controversy involving this kind of money and public institutions and it was some non-sports endeavour, people would screaming why ISN’T the legislature involved?

The resolution probably took about 10 minutes to write and it did not waste any time. Some of you need to get a life and stop complaining about everything. And for those complaining about Buckeye fans, ALL fans of ALL college teams are terrible. Go to an away game and let me know what you think. The Buckeyes’ fans have a well deserved bad rap, but fans everywhere say the exact same things.

@Jim - crawl back into your little hole of a room in your mother’s attic. Rants like yours have been heard for years, and soundly rejected. Enough already. For those who believe OSU fans are bad, get out of your basements this fall and experience fans from Michigan, Notre Dame, Alabama, Texas, USC, etc. They are just as bad. As far as keeping the game at the end of the season, sounds to me that this issue was known, or should have been known, prior to OSU and scUM (nice one) voting to allow Nebraska into the Big 10. Now they are concerned? Doesn’t sound smart to me.

I think that the state should stay out of the Ohio State-Michigan football game because the state has other issues to deal with especially the high unemployment rate. I look for to watching the Ohio State and Michigan game at the end of the regular season.

Now I am as big of Buckeye fan as the next person, but this is ridiculous. The State has more pressing items it needs to be concerned with rather than trying to keep the OSU/Michigan game at the end of the season. Sounds just like Congress getting mixed up with MLB players who are on steroids…it’s not what they are there for!

Back@U Jess: As an OSU alum, I’m very well aware of OSU’s research prowess. The problem is, most people identify OSU with football (and the antics Woody Hayes, for that matter). I just think that OSU (and all universities for that matter) would serve their core mission of education and research much better if they followed the example of the University of Chicago, which withdrew from the Western Football Conference (the predecessor of the Big Ten) and has been much the better for it ever since. Intercollegiate sports have become BIG BUSINESS with very little to do with higher education. It’s time for a formal divorce of the two functions, and I can’t think of a better place to begin the proceedings than at one of the nation’s flag-ship football boot camps.

I’m as in favor as the next person of keeping the game at the end of the season, but really, does the legislature have nothing more important to do? This is about as important as Congress bringing Roger Clemens up to answer whether he lied about steroids - who cares!!!!!!!!

“It has been said that millions of Michiganians as well as University of Michigan alumni, fans and players also look forward to the game, although less so in recent years.” Thank you News-Sun for another sub-par journalist and close-minded Buckeye fan. The reason this rivalry is so great is that both sides look forward to watching their team play. Would this really be the greatest rivalry in sports if only the OSU fans looked forward to the game? This is the reason Buckeye fans are disliked by many other schools, for their close-minded and selfish attitudes. As a current OSU student and lifelong Buckeye fan, it sickens me to see fans like this continue to bring a less than desierable reputation to our wonderful school and sports program.

Personally, Football is not a life or death type of thing for me. However, The tradition of a friendly Rivalry and the hoopla that goes around it is one of the few remaining traditions that hasn’t been decimated by dropping old traditions that brought people together. I am tired of all the nastiness and hoopla over right and left and voting no because you belong to one group or another. This tradition is about a rivalry in which both sides are adament, but when it is over, they all agree it is a great tradition to share. What is wrong with keeping a tradition that does not include hate and anomosity to bring people of different beliefs together even if it is for just a few hours?

@Jim, The legislature has every right to conduct this type of legislation, as OSU is a state funded university and is governed by the Ohio Board of Regents and Ohio government. Additionally, OSU does quite a bit of research. You just don’t hear about their research as much as you hear about research conducted at local universities due to proximity. The James Cancer Research Center (at OSU) is a leader in cancer and stem cell research. Their heart hospital has conducted groundbreaking procedures in treatment of heart disease. Lastly, there cannot be college football without college. There are already minor leagues for football; however, the NFL requires at least three years of college experience prior to the draft in an effort to provide these athletes with a “Plan B” when something happens to their career. Just thought I would clarify a few points for you!

The legislature has no business getting into university matters like this. As for the university, it’s about time OSU distanced itself from Buckeye football and became a true research university like those of the ivy league. Make the Buckeyes a “farm team” for the pros with no formal attachment to OSU. Players would not be expected to attend classes during their football years, but would be eligible for any Ohio state university or technical school scholarships later, after they retire from their pro careers or when they fail to make the pros after several years service with the farm team. But, for God’s sake, get the university out of the football business! Stop the farce of “student athletes”!

Consecutive games? Beating them twice would be better? Has the whole world gone f**kin nuts. Moving the game would be the worst thing to happen since greedo shooting first. For the past 35 years, I have looked forward to watching this game. No other game matter but the rivalry between the two schools. As a Soldier of 28 years, it is trash talking time which starts in August and we never speak on week to week results however, that last game is the game of games - My Wolves have struggled - but I am loyal regardless of the outcome. Just watching the talent between the two schools excites me. The schedule should not change based on the addition of Nebraska. It is good to have them in the conference but ending the rivalry is not necessary.

What’s wrong with it being the last game of the season? I remember back in ‘06 when OSU was ranked #1 and scUM was #2 and lost, all they could talk about was getting “another shot”. Well, here is the opportunity to provide that scenario. The only thing better than beating them once would be beating them twice in one year in consecutive games.
