Brown, union say China violated World Trade Organization rules
By Steve Bennish Staff Writer
Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown said he’s siding with the United Steelworkers in a petition they filed Thursday Sept. 9 accusing China of violating World Trade Organization rules by subsidizing exports of clean energy equipment.
“Next week will be the tenth anniversary of Congress passing permanent normal trade relations with China, paving the way for China’s membership in the World Trade Organization,” Brown said. “ Back then, advocates in both parties said WTO membership would ensure China played by the rules. If only that were the case. Since receiving PNTR status and the benefits of WTO membership, China has fought off fair competition while building market share on wind and solar products and technologies.”
Brown said the situation is costing Ohio jobs and revenue.
“There is nothing normal or fair about the way China trades. If we are going to compete in the global clean energy manufacturing industry, we need strong trade enforcement. Every day we delay enforcing trade rules, China spends $51 million a day to speed past us in the race to lead the world in clean energy manufacturing, while elbowing competition out of the way through unfair subsidies and discriminatory tactics.”
Brown said he urges “the Administration to work without delay alongside workers and businesses to challenge China’s trade practices at the WTO. Clean energy represents the future of manufacturing. Acting now means that we won’t displace America’s dependence on foreign oil for a dependence on Chinese-made clean energy technology.”
Brown said that with more than 70 percent of the components of clean energy systems produced outside the U.S., he’s “fighting to bolster domestic production of clean energy components and to make Ohio the Silicon Valley of Clean Energy Manufacturing.”

If I were the Steel workers, I would be worried about “soundbite” Brown. He ran on overturning NAFTA and trade with China and has not fulfilled his promises. “If it comes from Brown, flush it down.”

Brown:….“fighting to bolster domestic production of clean energy components and to make Ohio the Silicon Valley of Clean Energy Manufacturing.”…..Brown is fighting the wrong shadows he perceives as a threat. It’s Germany, not China, which leads the world in solar panel technology. He neglects to state that while singling out China which is designed to appeal to unions. However, there are factions which are critical of the WTO, NATO, and the UN (add the World Bank when convenient) as political intrusions into free markets. I think that is true at times. However, Brown has yet to ask, or demand, transcipt proceedings of G8 summits; THAT’s where the deals are being made and Brown is as clueless about it as we are. China has currency problems which, ironically, works to our disadvantage, but Brown can’t address that while claiming some mythical infraction of the WTO agreements. The unions were not a part of those agreements because they play no role in international trade.

Brown has a peculiar take on market economies and their components. Market advantage and innovation are the driving forces behind free markets. Clean technology is good for the world, not just China, the US, or the next napping 3rd world nation which wakes up with a better idea or resource. Unions, like the government, don’t make anything. In fact, the worker today can strike a better deal for himself in an employment climate where the average worker changes jobs every 5.5 years. There may still be a place for unions but not as Brown is addressing it.

We fought hard in this country for all workers to have a good life, fair wage, healthcare, and retirement. Which meant a nice wage. China and others do not provide this but undermine this. We get cheap parts but prices do not go down. They won’t let us sell to them. They are hardcore leaders with steel rods and we help keep them in power. Their military is getting bigger each day.

I agree with the previous poster. If Brown says it, it must be a lie, the truth isn’t in him. Unions are communistic, their logo is on the communist flags “Workers Unite” so if the unions endorse this, it is also necessarily a lie. Slight of hand, wonder what the progressives are trying to hid now? It’s always a diversion to try to take your attention off of the economy, loss of jobs, and their job killing policies that are hurting the American people. Energy tax? Yeah right. Tax us for air because we aren’t going to pay enough for the hc entitlement bill and all of the newly created agencies. I should list those here. I think I will.

Instead of kissing more union butt, Senator Brown should be watching out for the rest of us. Union membership is dropping. The reason he does it is because unions give HUGE amounts of their remaining member’s dues to Democrat politicians. He puts on a good show about representing all of us, but he really just cares about who has the most money. Doesn’t even answer emails on subjects he is uncomfortable with or knows nothing about. Can’t wait to vote him OUT.
