UPDATED with Strickland response - GOP rebukes Strickland on union rally “rant”

Ohio Republican Chairman Kevin DeWine and the Republican Governors Association have rebuked Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland for a Strickland outburst at a union rally and called for an apology.

Strickland said on Friday, Sept. 10, that there will be no apology and there is no need for one.

At the Cincinnati AFL-CIO Labor Day picnic the governor said the GOP “has been taken over by the zealots, extremists, by the radicals, by the reckless..

“And they don’t seem to like Ohio very much and, quite frankly, they act as if they don’t like America very much.”

Ohio GOP Chairman Kevin DeWine of Fairborn used a press release to scold Strickland, who’s running for re-election against Republican John Kasich, a former U.S. House member from the Columbus area.

“I realize the governor is probably very frustrated by the fact that he’s losing, but it’s pretty sad to see him resort to the angry, divisive tactics that have defined his campaign this year.

“This time he’s gone too far, and he owes a lot of Ohioans an apology.”

RGA spokesman Chris Schrimpf used a press release to call it Strickland’s “Howard Dean moment,” a reference to Dean’s scream after losing Iowa’s Democratic caucuses in 2004.

Strickland cited former President Harry Truman in responding.

“Let me quote Harry Truman. Harry Truman said, ‘I don’t give them hell, I just tell them the truth and they think it’s hell.’

“And all I’m doing is telling the truth and I have no apologies to make whatsoever.”

Strickland said that Kasich repeatedly has praised Florida and Nevada as better places than Ohio for business and that state Auditor Mary Taylor, Kasich’s lieutenant governor running mate, even has said that as a CPA she advised successful business people to leave Ohio.

“That sounds as if they don’t like Ohio very much and so all I’m doing is telling the truth,” Strickland said.

Kasich and Taylor also have said they want to change Ohio’s tax and regulatory systems to make them more appealing to business.

The Ohio GOP and the RGA both posted an excerpt from the speech on YouTube.

Let the Dem “smear” campaign begin. We will be hearing over and over again that it will “scary” to have the GOP in charge. The GOP policy drove us into the ditch even though the Dems ran Congress since 2006. Gov. Strickland needs to connect the dots exactly how the $400 m stimulus program will create jobs. Soon we will be getting the tax bill for the stimulus and higher healthcare insurance premimums.

Strickland is an embarrassment. Remember Howard Dean a few years back running for President…that clip reminds me of how unprofessional Strickland really is. No respect! BTW, I’m a Republican…love God, my family and country. Too bad most liberals can’t even get those kind of words out of their mouth…At least with most conservatives they know that this country was founded on Christian values and don’t dance around that issue. Time for America to wake up. Vote Kasich!

Why is it that it is OK for Lintbaugh, Mannity, O’Rielly, Beck, A-Rod, Mel Gibson, LeBron James, etc. to have an AGENT negotiate pay and working conditions for them, BUT it is not OK for the guy working the shop floor to have someone negotiate pay and working conditions for him? Union haters hate Americans.

I work for a state agency and also I am in a worthless state employee union. Strickland made state employees take furlough days, or days off without pay. Then what does his adminstration do, they hire 18 more employees throughout the state. Union does not care. They gain more union dues and Tax and Ted helps the union.I can’t wait until he is gone. See ya Tax and Ted!

Good night and good bye Teddy. It was nice knowing you. If that speech did not wrap up the election for Kasich, not sure what will. Its beautiful when you call half of the state, not normal, and zealots. That should go over really well with struggling Ohioans. It just shows the man was way over his head in all respects to the governership.

Kasich is just plain arrogant! He says Ohio doesnt need passenger trains , and intends to send back the 400 million Ohio received for these trains! These trains will create jobs and economic development for OHIO! Vote Strickland!

Typical bumper-sticker sloagans. Hey, gov’nor: Your party has acquiesced to the unions and their slow growth, esp in the public sector. Oh… the non-accountability of workers’ performance/responsibility that the unions protect!!

Typical democrat reflect is evil on to others and deny that it is actually himself. Strickland we like Ohio and America. It appears to be you who disrespects Ohioan and Americans. You see Ted you are a man just a man. Being a politician does not make you better, smarter, or above those of us you look down upon. You see you work for us. You are a public servant. We do not work for you. You have disrespected us long enough. We are not children and we don’t need a nanny. Time to take back our lives. Strickland you must go!
