Strickland running mate Yvette McGee Brown says Ohio has fewest state employees since Reagan administration

For much of this gubernatorial campaign, Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland has been defending his record against charges from Republican challenger John Kasich that he has done too little to stem job losses in Ohio and responding to accusations that he still oversees a bloated state government.
Strickland’s running mate, Yvette McGee Brown, in her own campaign speeches has echoed the governor’s. Recently she tackled a charge by Republicans that Ohio still has too many employees on the state payroll by evoking the name of one of the GOP’s favorite sons.
Ohio today has the “fewest number of state employees since the Reagan administration,” McGee Brown said in an Aug. 4 speech at a candidates forum in Columbus.
Clearly, recent well-chronicled state layoffs and hiring freezes almost assure Ohio has fewer state employees than when Strickland took office in 2007. But could it be fewer than in the 1980s when Reagan was president, as Brown contends?
The Strickland campaign is looking to reverse long-held Republican opinion that Democrats favor higher taxes and bigger government.
The higher taxes issue will loom for whomever is Ohio’s next governor, given that the state faces up to an $8 billion budget deficit in the next operating budget with seemingly few options other than raising personal income taxes.
But the big government question is something Strickland has dealt with since 2009 when the last biennial budget was set and the administration laid off state workers, froze hiring in some areas and otherwise shrunk government by attrition.
Now McGee Brown has gone a step further by stating that under Strickland, Ohio now has the fewest state employees since Reagan, who was president from 1981 through 1989.
Strickland’s campaign communications team offered uneven explanations for where McGee Brown got her information. It first stated it came from a state data chart that officials could not find until, PolitiFact began inquiring three weeks after McGee Brown’s speech. It then said the information was in an October 2009 news release from the Strickland administration that the campaign never produced.
But the Ohio Department of Administrative Services bailed them out. It discovered annual employee data in a trends report that contained information dating back to 1983 and updated to include recent years.
The report shows that as of December 2009, Ohio had 58,622 employees, the lowest number since 1983 when the state had 60,292 workers. That 28-year stretch includes a period from 1991 through 2006 when Ohio’s governors were Republicans and the state had more than 65,000 employees.

The state employees teachers, police, state employees, and even our poor legislatures pension system is causing the state budget to baloon each year. Do you think our present governor is going to go against his union supporters to straighten this out. Lets put him on the exorbitant retirement funds he has supported for his tenure in government.

An obvious step in the RIGHT direction, but we still have a very long way to go. If only this was also happening with the Federal Government. Federal and local union elimination would be an even better move. What possible reason is there for these institutions ?

Very enlightening comment, Ms Brown. If Strickland knew how to govern, he wouldn’t have had to lay off Ohio employees. If you want more layoffs, keep Stickless in charge.

L Berry: ALL state agencies do not hire contract employees. Many do. I can speak for my agency - we do not hire temps. We do have part-time employees - & they are counted in the total. On the other points, my small office has 2 1/2 fewer people than 5 years ago. (One full-timer retired & was replaced with a part-timer.)

Bill: The government spending info is completely out of context. In my private sector job, I was making about $400 a week in 1992. Today that job pays about $1,000 a week. Gov’t spending isn’t just on employees. Utility costs, auto costs, insurance costs and everything else have gone up. So logically, total spending would have gone up - for everyone, not just government.

The state of ohio employees union are a big problem and should be gotten rid of. They don’t do anything, cost too much and don’t help the employees. Whoever hired them for Adult Parole should be fired. Of course Adult parole hires some of the dumbest SOB’s ever to walk down the street.

Tom, you are correct, Correction Officers and other prison employee’s have taken the burden when it comes to fewer state workers. In 2008 there was mass layoff’s in the dept of rehab and correction and now with the current inmate population we are having more inmate on staff assaults. I wish the public was aware of the dangers we encounter and the service we provide. We need to vote STRICKLAND!!!

ASk another question…How many State Agebcies are now hiring Contract Services to boister their workforce? Tghe answer is ALL. It;s a way to try to hide the real number of people working for teh State. They hide the fact by claiming they are just hired for surges in work demands. The real answer is they have been adding to totals in all branches of State. So Strickland can say State Employees ar elower, but total workforce is higher.

Tim…you have no clue. Technology has helped but it has not been the main reason for reduction in workforce. In many cases state agencies are just operating with fewer people. Prison guards are a case in point.

Nice try DEMS, implementation of technology is the main reason for fewer government positions. Check out the number of grants awarded for equipment etc… over the past 28 years that list as a savings “staff reduction” for new computer equipment and software applications etc… How about an honest assessment?
