Governor’s race tightens in Quinnipiac poll; Kasich leads Strickland, 50-41 percent
Republican John Kasich leads Democratic incumbent Ted Strickland, 50-41 percent among likely voters in a Quinnipiac University poll released on Tuesday.
That’s down from a 54-37 percent lead Kasich had in a Sept. 16 Quinnipiac poll. Other public polls have shown a tighter race. The Dayton Daily News/Ohio Newspaper poll showed Kasich leading, 49-45 percent.
The RealClearPolitics.com Web site showed Kasich with an average lead of 3.5 percent in public polls.
Kasich leads 62 - 29 percent lead among independent voters in the new poll, the group responsible for his overall lead.
“The governor’s race has tightened but Kasich still has a healthy lead with four weeks until election day,” Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, said in a press release.
“If Gov. Strickland is to mount a comeback, he needs to make a major dent in Kasich’s commanding lead among independent voters, who often make the difference in close elections in Ohio.”
President Barack Obama’s frequent trips to Ohio don’t seem to be helping Strickland.
Just 14 percent of likely voters overall and just 6 percent of independent voters say the president’s visits make them more likely to vote for Strickland.
Thirty-three percent of likely voters overall and 39 percent of independent voters say a presidential visit makes it less likely they’ll back Strickland.
Other poll results:
*Voters disapprove, 57-39 percent, of the job President Obama is doing in the White House.
*Voters disapprove, 53-40 percent, of the job Strickland is doing as governor.
*Voters disapprove, 58-35 percent, of Strickland’s handling of the economy.
*By 51 - 39 percent, voters think Kasich would do a better job than Strickland in rebuilding the state’s economy.
*Just 14 percent of likely voters think the state’s economy is getting better, while 45 percent say it’s getting worse and 40 percent say it’s staying the same.
*Strickland leads 88 - 3 percent among those who think the economy is improving while Kasich leads 55-38 percent among those who say it’s about the same and 76 - 13 percent among those who think it is getting worse.
The poll was taken Sept. 29 through Sunday with 1,025 likely voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
