Online quiz helps voters pick judges

A new online tool developed by Ohio State University law professor Ric Simmons helps voters figure out who would best represent their views on the judicial bench.

Simmons set up www.chooseyourjudges.org, which quizzes voters on their leanings when it comes to legal issues such as malpractice cases, election law, criminal defense, insurance companies and government taxation. It also asks how important it is to the voter that the judicial candidate has experience as a criminal defense attorney or prosecutor, went to a highly ranked law school, or won a bar association stamp of approval.

Based on the answers, it spits out a report on which candidates for Ohio Supreme Court and district appellate court best match the voter’s preferences and views.

Simmons said he and his team researched all split decisions by the Ohio Supreme Court over the last 10 years, looked at decisions by appellate court judges, and reviewed credentials and experience of judges.

“The biggest complaint about judicial elections is voters know nothing at all or very little about judicial candidates,” Simmons said.

One-third of voters leave blank their choices for judicial slots and many of the ones who make a pick do so based on party affiliation or name recognition, he said.

Data is available to voters in Ohio, Iowa, Illinois and California and Michigan will be added soon, said Simmons, a former prosecutor who teaches criminal law. He noted that political scientists have used this kind of data to gauge appointed judges on the federal bench. He decided to give voters access to similar data at election time to help them make informed choices, he said.

@Views?!!! If you don’t want democracy in judicial elections, it’s probably a bad idea to elect judges in the first place. Of course, your whole argument rests on the idea that there are no ambiguities in the phrasing of any law anywhere, which isn’t the case. Then again, you presumably believe that there is one clear, obvious interpretation of every legal document (including the U.S. Constitution), which conveniently happens to agree with your personal views. And BTW, please do some research on what autism actually is before you start throwing the word around willy-nilly.

While this study may initially sound like a goof idea, it fails to take into account the political realities of having the voters pick judges. The judges who impact our daily lives are municipal and common pleas judges. These individuals are selected by the local party, rarely run opposed, and normally campaign very little. If you haven’t had a speeding ticket, been arrested, or butchered the English language like “By Views”, you wouldn’t know a judge’s political views, nor should those views matter. Judges at all levels should be chosen for their legal expertise and impartiality, not because of the amount of money they have contributed to the local/state party coffers. If the voters wish to make an informed decision about which judge(s) to vote for, ask the lawyers who practice in those courts.

By Views?!!!

My “views” have nothing to do what I expect a judge to do, you idiots. I expect a judge to follow established law, on the books, in dealing with what needs to be judged in the court he/she presides in. Is this a popularity contest? Why have a judge when we can use “democracy”!!!! (Democracy: Two wolves and a sheep are in a room. The wolves just decided what’s for lunch….since they’re in the majority…not rule of law…majority, which you brain dead autism followers believe in). See how well that works out? I used sheep to describe most of you morons, posting in criticism of the legal truth…because you’re politically correct Goebbels/Marx myrmydons…following the convienient party line. The shade of stupidity grows darker the more you try to find your light. God have mercy on your souls for having helped lose this country.
