Governor candidates Strickland, Kasich hold final debate before election
By Lynn Hulsey and Laura Bischoff

TOLEDO - In debating Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland on Thursday Republican candidate for governor John Kasich dusted off one of Ronald Reagan’s signature phrases, “Are we better off today than we were four years ago?”
In Strickland’s view, the state has turned a corner, no thanks to Republicans like Kasich and Wall Street “shenanigans.”
“The freefall has been stopped,” said Strickland. “All you and your friends want to do is say ’ no no.’”
Strickland argued that the worst of the economic pain was caused by Kasich’s fellow Republicans, including former President George W. Bush.
“You are like a broken record. You’ve got to get off of that,” said Kasich, a former U.S. Congressman and Lehman Brothers managing director.
The two men faced off in their final debate, a matchup sponsored by the Dayton Daily News and other members of the Ohio Newspaper Organization.
Kasich accused Strickland of raising taxes.
Strickland said the decision by him and the Ohio Legislature to delay a tax cut was not a tax increase, but was a way to patch an $851 million budget hole. Strickland said Kasich would instead have cut funding for Ohio’s schools and colleges.
Strickland said Kaisch’s call for eliminating Ohio’s income tax, which makes up about 46 percent of tax revenues is irresponsible. He said it will lead to state funding cuts that will drive costs to the local communities and cause property taxes to increase.
“I think my opponent has an extreme philosophy that is devoid of common sense,” Strickland said after the debate.

You turn this state over to Big Business and that is what you will get. they do not worry about jobs. their first concern is money. they can build a factory and shut it down in three years if they don’t making the kind of profit the shareholders expect. it doesn’t necessarily mean they are losing money, they just are not making as much profit as they predicted.

Elect Kasich and get Fat Cat Secret Bonuses for Everyone!!! It’s going to be so fantastic. Big bad Government or Big bad Corporations? So much for helping Small Business owners, let’s just add another couple Zero’s onto the Walmart Shareholder’s checks! This guy has the same creepy smile that W had. But I kind of want to have a beer with him… so I’m gonna vote Kasich.

While I have question about all candidates I believe a straight line support for Kasich, Boehner and Portman is in order. If we don’t react now to save the freedom our families gave their lives for, we will lose alot of rights. Obama and unsavory organizations like Acorn that loans money to open sex houses will continue. We will lose more healthcare rights than ever if we support the Dem agenda. I stand strong for Kasich, Boehner and Portman!

I support Kasich, Boehner and Portman because I know the danger we are in if we allow the Obama cult to continue. They are taking our free society and turning into a government control. In other words, instead of the people having freedom our govt. will control us. I want it stopped! I don’t always agree with everything a candidate does but I know that Kasich, Boehner and Portman are for our freedom!

It is tough to admit how stupid I may actually be. Terri, can you help me. If it is bad for John Kasich to be a “front for big businesses;” then, does that mean you think it is good for Gov. Strickland to be opposed to big business. Sometimes I feel like we allow ALL politicians to play to our child-like beliefs that they can give us everything we want, like Jesse pointed out. In my world, where I pay for things with money I earned, there is a difference between needs and wants, and what I can afford. Government needs to follow these principals. When they promise an increase one area, we should demand that they state what will be cut to balance the equation. The one thing Jessie forgot to mention is that I still want a pony for my birthday.

The truth is that Americans, never got the cange we so voted for in the first place. In addition to the truth we can say their is no really good people running this country I would blame Ohio for its lack of knowledge for chosing a more suitable leader that left America nothing to look foward however, its sad Ohio have to suffer, but they are not alone on policies that seems all we do is tax and spend on programs that are useless to us all.

The demographic facts (as recently related in N.P.R.) show, since Reagan, a steady and massive transfer of wealth to an elite few. To quote Warren Buffet, who’s near the end of his life and did back Obama for President and who is clearly a member of the elite few, said: “There are those in this country who want to leave dynasties”. Kasich and the Republicans of his ilk have no concern for the little guy, nor even for keeping a system that allows a little guy to become wealthy (Although, I know he’d say otherwise). Kasich would eliminate the death tax, and make permanent the Bush era tax cuts (Which Buffet argues is necessary to recycle wealth and goes onto argue these tax cuts to the very wealthy should end). So Kasich cloaks his true intentions with lots of patriotism, and speaks of freedom from big government, but his connections with Lehman Brothers and with the Mega wealthy, should not be blithely brushed aside. So unless you intend to inherit over 1 Million dollars in the near future, or you are a mega-millionaire, who wants to create a dynasty, it’s not in your best interest to elect Kasich, but maybe he’ll make you feel good with empty his comments on bad big government. In economics and politics follow the money and look at the people behind Kasich and their true intentions. Personally, I see his and many Republicans of the Bush era as looking out for the interests of the Mega wealthy, but certainly not for the rest of us who want to get ahead by the sweat of our brow and our small, but hard fought investments in our future.

Terri’s opinions won’t change Bob. The Constitution to people like Terri is a quaint, archaic “notion” that we with an inferior intellect still believe and want to uphold. Terri so staunchly entrenched in her/his ideological beliefs that any hope for intellectual honesty isn’t even remotely possible.

Too many Republicans are unhinged…so a conversation focusing on the facts is not possible. The Media is spreading the word. They should not be allowed to vote until they take a class on the issues and pass a test.

YES I WANT HIGH SPEED RAIL, FOR FREE. YES I WANT A FREE COLLEGE EDUCATION FOR MY CHILDREN. YES I WANT FREE HEALTH CARE. YES I WANT A CHICKEN IN EVERY POT……However that in not realistic, and we live in the real world, (or at least some of us do) The Democrats want to promise everything for everyone….at least until we elect them. And then they blame the rest of the world for blocking their ‘pie in the sky’ dreams. How about some reality, and moving forward in the best country in the world. YES WE CAN, BUT NOT BY SITTING AROUND WISHING FOR THAT GOVERNMENT HAND OUT !!!!!!

many other states are not in to 10% unemployment like Ohio,Bush’s no child left behind was a failure because when democrats took control of the house ans senate in 2006 they defunded it.Let me guess its Bush’s fault still.

I didn’t see a ‘debate.’ I did see an exchange of innuendo’s and unanswered questions. It would appear both candidates were preaching to their own parties rather than making an effort to snag some undecided, Independents.

Proud Republican your main man is a front for big businesses. With that said, yes he would be anti-rail for obvious reasons. Oil companies… or against health care because of his need to support insurance companies… keep the list going and I will tell you where he stands. Its no brainer. Any competition facing big businesses he will address at the expense of Republican and Democratic voters… The devil is in the details. Lord help us. You also fail to state why we are in this financial mess, You also fail to acknowledge that in the midst of the Repub induced failed economy Strickland has managed to dig us out of a ditch and has placed us on the right road, a road leading to economic recovery. Have you looked at an income growth map to see how citizens fare under Democrats vs. Republicans or… anything to prove your points or just to understand that Repubs are not being honest about what they have done to this nation and the middle class.

Well, I read this article and wonder if I am reading a NEWS article or a press release from Gov. Strickland’s campaign. At least I take comfort in knowing that I will cancel out some misinformed voters ballot when I vote for Kasich. I am a gov’t employee with 19 years senority. I will have my job, but all you ignorant, misinformed people who vote for Strickland better watch out for yours. Four more years of businesses fleeing the state, Four more years of declining property values, Four more years of increased taxes. And high speed rail, give me a break. Has anyone ever bothered to look at the schedule they put out? It is not conducive to the working person and how, pray tell, are we going to keep it going? Increased taxes? It will take longer to go to Cincy or Columbus on the rail than by car. By the time you pay the fare, pay a cab to take you to your destination and account for lost time due to impractical arrival times, it is far cheaper and more efficient to take your car.

Kasich lost millions of dollars for Ohio pensions while making nearly a millions dollars with bankrupt Wall Street firm Lehmans. Kasich knows all about privatizing the profits and socializing the losses he’s lived it.

Kasich knows nothing about evidenced based education. He should know that Bush’s NCLB mentions SBR at least 100 times. Has he asked why there was a need for educational practices that work? He sounds like Reagan with his block grants, which were just as wild and led to the gaming of the system or just plain corruption. Compliance mandates are a part of the system for a reason. Overall, Kasich wants to create this utopia…but the devil is always in the details with him. The Lehman Brothers example Strickland pointed out shows something about Kasich’s character. Here you have Ohioans losing their life savings and it does not faze him. Why? He takes a 400, 000 bonus and does not blink as if Ohioans mean nothing to him. I say the bonus was not his…ethically but he was not… or is not ethical and therein lies the problem. This sounds redundant to mention but everyone knows Strickland would not have taken a bonus and would not have hesitated about making that decision (humility, justice, etc. are a part of his character). There is no second guessing him. But Kasich is just the opposite. He cannot be trusted… We do not know what he will do or say. We already know that he says he balanced a budget but he fails to say that his decisions led to a financial collapse. It is almost as if Kasich forced a whole lot of junk into a closet, got the door to close then he ran out of the room… seconds later all of the junk pours out. In other words he did not help the nation… he just kept things out of sight for a short period of time, leaving someone else to suffer through his messes. Way to go Kasich… Four more years Strickland! Four More years!

It would be nice to vote for someone who had a clue. Strickland wasn’t bad but could have been a whole lot better. I thought about Kasich but a 46 per cent cut in the income tax? Duh! The money will just come from property taxes that are already a joke! Makes you want to crawl into bed and pull up the covers until the election is over.
