New Mandel ad just as scummy, Dems say
Republican Josh Mandel’s new mailed campaign piece is just as “scummy” and “bigoted” as his TV commercial, Ohio Democratic Party Chairman Chris Redfern said Monday.
Both pieces imply that incumbent Democratic state Treasurer Kevin Boyce is a Muslim who is friends with bank lobbyist Noure Alo. Neither is true.
The Mandel campaign said last week that it was pulling the “Corruption” ad from the TV airwaves, though Redfern said TV station records show the ad was due to fall out of rotation over the weekend anyway.
Now a mailer with the word “Trust?” in shattered lettering links Boyce with Alo, who lobbied for Boston-based State Street Bank. It uses Alo’s first name - Mohammed - four times even though he goes by his middle name.
Redfern promised to file a complaint with the Ohio Elections Commission over the mailer. The Democratic Party already filed a complaint regarding the TV ad.
Mandel campaign spokesman Joe Aquilino said in an e-mail that the Ohio Republican Party is responsible for the mailer, which was sent bulk rate mail and could take up to a week to arrive.
“To be sure, I have personally called the ORP to make sure no more mailers on this theme are mailed. I can’t control mailers they already may have mailed and that may arrive with a week’s delay over this past weekend or some time next week,” Aquilino said. “With 23 days left in the campaign, I can tell you that neither our campaign nor the ORP will be doing any more advertising including these themes. We may continue highlighting Treasurer Boyce’s corruption and cronyism problems, but in a different manner.”
Spokesmen for the Ohio Republican Party could not be immediately reached for comment.
The race for treasurer is a statistical dead heat, according to the Suffolk University poll of likely Ohio voters conducted Oct. 4-6. It showed Boyce leading 37 percent to Mandel’s 34 percent with 24 percent of voters undecided. Five percent of voters favored Libertarian candidate Matthew Cantrell, who was endorsed by The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer.

Im leaving it - “Rethugs sweep the elections based upon fear and ignorance of the voting populace” How do you think Obama managed to get elected? Democrats wrote the playbook on Fear and Smear (Saul Alinsky ring any bells?) I’d rather have Mandel than a thug like Boyce any day.

@perspective: Yes, it is factually his first name. Mandel is factually Jewish - would it be appropriate to point that out in a smear ad against him? “Joshua Mandel, a Jew…” can you imagine the outcry? @JS: the American people have the option of not supporting the machine. There are third parties and independent candidates. For this race, Libertarian Matthew Cantrell is an option.

Mohammed “Skip” Boyce, maybe that’s what he’d like to be called these days, is suffering the consequences of a middle eastern name. It’s his name. Can’t run from it. Hiring someone through personal/religious connections for a public sector position should result in public outcry, again, natural consequences. You can’t deny the lack of common sense in such a politically suicidal move. That lack of smarts alone, disqualifies him from consideration for Treasurer! It’s too late to run from it now pal.

Best poing made: if Boyce was so incompetent and unethical, this mailer wouldn’t be neccessary. Mandel could win on the issues, if such were the case. Worst point made; I’m with the guy whose rifle is aimed in the same direction, because it might be aimed at your head. Dumbest part of all of this? Boyce is probably unethical, and Mandel is probably not qualified, which is what the parasitic duopoly we call politics leaves us with; two bad choices. In the end, both are cogs in the machine, no matter the party affiliation. Taking campaign donations, doing the bidding of the largest donors, phrasing it in ways that make you feel like they’re on your side, and they never are. Continue with your squabbling and miss the real point. This is all a nice, shiny distraction.

You speak of tactics? Smear? How ‘bout the truth. Even the DDN has acknowleged that Boyce is a criminal waiting to happen. Ok, ciminal “might” be to strong, lets just say “Unethical” instead. Boyce is gone, Mandel is in. And yes, I always default to trusting the guy who’s rifle is pointed in the same direction as mine. It’s a Marine thing…you clearly wouldn’t understand.

He may be a Marine, but his tactics in this election are dishonorable. This is a shameful ad straight from the Willie Horton mold. That one would continue believing the smears and cast this person as having unquestionable integrity based purely on military experience is ridiculous.

Josh Mandel is a known member of a military extremist group that holds itself apart from the rest of civilization. They speak in a secret code and say things like “Oorah”, “Semper Fi” and “Gung Ho”. Worse, they actually believe in silly things like Courage, Honor, and Commitment. He would definitely be a breath of fresh air for the Treasurer’s office. When in doubt, vote for the Marine…not the unindicted criminal in there right now…

This is typical Republican tactics from the old Atwater playbook. True, Democrats have used similar tactics in other races in the past, but not with the ruthless efficiency of Republicans who spew this nonsense out 24/7 on their own network. “The only good dem is an unemployed dem”? Really, “Tootsie”, are you sure you wouldn’t feel happier in something other than a democracy where one is discriminated against based on party affiliation? You and other so-called patriots appear to be advocating a one-party system by which the other side succumbs to baseless smears and innuendo.

Boyce and the Democrats are Crybabies! They can be as mean and nasty as much as they want but are the first to scream foul when the Republicans try to play at their own game. The facts are facts, Boyce is unethical and the worst State Treasurer we have ever had. Mandel is a strong leader who will clean up the office. Democrats why don’t you practice what you preach and quit being hypocrites.

Since identity politics and smears based on religion and ethnicity are apparently fair game, it’s worth pointing out that Mandel was a member of an organization that lobbies for a known nuclear-armed state sponsor of terrorism, assassination, illegal occupation and war crimes. See how your strategy backfires, Joshy? Slimeball tactics like yours are part of why I’m voting third party these days.
