Husted faces elections complaint

State Sen. Jon Husted, R-Kettering, is being accused of running false advertisements in his campaign for secretary of state against Franklin County Clerk of Courts Maryellen O’Shaughnessy, a Democrat.

The Ohio Democratic Party today filed a complaint with the Ohio Elections Commission against Husted, his campaign and the Ohio Republican Party. The complaint says that print or television ads for Husted falsely claim that O’Shaughnessy voted herself a raise while a member of Columbus City Council and falsely imply that she took a campaign contribution from indicted Cuyahoga County Commissioner Jimmy Dimora.

Both claims have been found to be false by the Cleveland Plain Dealer’s PolitiFact Ohio.

The commission’s probable cause panel will consider the complaint at 8:30 a.m. Thursday in Columbus. The are expected to make a decision to either find probable cause or dismiss the complaint, said Phil Richter, executive director of the elections commission. If probable cause is found, the matter would go before the entire commission.

“We stand by the accuracy of our statements,” said Jason Mauk, spokesman for the Ohio Republican Party.

Husted could not be reached for comment.
