Kasich taps Sen. Buehrer to head Bureau of Workers’ Compensation

Gov.-elect John Kasich on Tuesday named state Sen. Steve Buehrer, R-Delta, as administrator of the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation in the new Kasich administration.

“A recurring theme in my conversations with small and large businesses over the past several years has been, ‘fix Workers Comp’,” Kasich said in a press release.

“Reducing the cost of Workers Comp is critical to reviving Ohio’s economy and creating jobs……I intend to fix it and Steve has the experience and the will to help in that effort.”

Buehrer, 43, said in the release that he has been involved in “nearly all major pieces of legislation impacting the Bureau.” In the Senate, he has served as chairman of the Insurance, Commerce and Labor Committee which oversees the bureau. He also is Majority Whip, the Senate’s number four leadership post.

Before starting his legislative career, Buehrer served as chief of human resources in the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation.

“I am ready to lead this challenging agency during this challenging time…,” said Buehrer.

Kasich made the announcement at a press conference in Wauseon in Fulton County, near Buehrer’s hometown.

MCO’s are in the pocket of business-period. The comp system is all business decisions and an injured worker is not suppose to take it personally. I believe stepping in a trench and blowing out a knee and ankle requires treatment. The delays and denials are not based on what is right or impartial. Appeals, MCO doctors who are far from objective are obstuctions that inhibit a timely return to work. Look at the political climate now- it is the golden rule. He who has the gold makes the rules.

Workers comp almost put me out business 40 employees for 2 claims that was not even my companys fault. Both traffic accidents that insurance companys failed to settle for two years and in the process driving my rates up to a quarter of a million dollars. Working with worker comp and Gov Strickland on this matter was a complete waste of time. There are 3 states in the nation that has system as bad as Ohio. We have to do something if we want more business. One more false claim and I am closing my doors I am tired of fighting it. I will move. If your hurt on the job you should be compenstated, but not be sent to some chiropracter who plays the system.

Wendy, learn how to post one time and I might listen to you.Halfway, you need to think this through a little more. Tell me why it would be better with national carriers for WC vs throught the State?? Not sure you would find a carrier willing to step in and take over asap. There many things to consider,at any one time the state has 250,000 active claims not including those on PTD. If it happens it will be in small chunks. If a claim is made and the medical supports the information reported then 99.9 % of the time the claim will be allowed…being Republican or Democratic has nothing to do with it. Karon??? What the hell does a homeless soldier have to do with Ohio WC???

I have several years of experience working for an MCO and dealing with employers, BWC, and injured workers. Ohio BWC needs a change. Republicans are not against worker’s comp nor have they held the injured workers in contempt. Actually Republicans are for the workers and employers. If you all would stop whining about being a victim you could see that. Worker’s Comp is there to assist you if you are injured at work. It is not all bad and certainly not against the worker. Regardless of whether you are a democrat or republican we need a new person in charge to make changes that will assist the employers in keeping their worker’s comp coverage and making their premiums affordable. There are too many people who abuse the system. This is what has caused premiums to go up and injured workers who deserve assistance to be denied treatment and compensation. I respect Kasich for making such a wise decision Strickland would not assume this responsibility. I would love to see Buehrer make the changes that are necessary to keep BWC coverage affordable for employers.

This and the move to make construction workers a seasonal line of work thus eliminating unemployment benefits for them is just the beginning of the purge of the middleclass, and you will all see just what Mr Krookish is all about.

WC is geared for Attorneys. The system was never that complicated but as the public keeps putting them in charge of WC they keep taking care of themselves to the loss to workers. To turn WC over to the Insurance crooks is like letting the fox in the hen house.

With the republicans in charge in Ohio. They might as well shut down WC . It will be a joke anyway . The republicans have always hated the working man anyway .

Ohio should do like almost every other state and turn this over to the insurance industry. Continued government involvement no matter who is in charge won’t change a thing. REDUCE BUREAUCRACY!

THE WORKERS COM IS AN UNFAIR COMPENSATION BECAUSE IT REWARDS THE FALSE CLAIMS BUT REFUSES THE REAL ONES. IT FORCES PEOPLE TO LIE AND CHEAT TO GET REAL HELP WHILE MANY DONT NEED HELP

The Ohio Rebubs have long held injured workers in contempt. No matter how injured or how much the employer was at fault. WC is no picnic for the worker either but they don’t need kicked while their down. If you provide a safe environment no need to worry about your WC rates
