Sen. Shannon Jones a candidate for Senate leadership post
Sen. Shannon Jones, R-Clearcreek Twp., is considered likely to be picked for the number four state Senate Republican leadership post in the new legislative session - Majority Whip - when Republican senators caucus next Tuesday.
The Warren County lawmaker did not deny interest in the post but declined further comment:
“It’s a decision between me and my caucus members. I’m not talking about it.”
Jones represents the 7th District, which includes all of Warren County and the eastern portion of Hamilton County.
Sen. Tom Niehaus, R-New Richmond, currently number two leader as President Pro Tem, is expected to become the next Senate President, replacing Sen. Bill Harris, R-Ashland, who is retiring.
Jones, then a state representative, was appointed to the Senate in August 2009 after the death of Sen. Robert Schuler.
Jones easily defeated former state Rep. Michelle Schneider of Maderia in the May Republican primary and won re-election on Nov. 2 with more than 70 percent of the vote against Democrat Sam Pettinichi.
There appears to be a contest for the number two spot between Sen. Keith Faber, R-Celina, currently the number three leader as Majority Floor Leader, and Sen. Bill Seitz, R-Cincinnati. Both have said they are candidates.
Sen. Jimmy Stewart, R-Athens, is the candidate for Majority Floor Leader in the new session.
Republicans will control the Senate 23-10 next year, up from a 21-12 majority currently.
One of the additional Senate seats Republicans won in this month’s election was in the 5th District, where former Tipp City councilman Bill Beagle defeated state Sen. Fred Strahorn.
The 5th District covers most of the city of Dayton, Huber Heights, Harrison Twp. and Riverside and all of Miami County and eastern Darke County.
