Screening committee named to help fill Husted Senate seat

A seven-member Republican screening committee that will recommend a replacement for state Sen. Jon Husted, R-Kettering, will include four Dayton-area representatives.

The committee will screen candidates for the 6th District seat on Dec. 13, according to a Monday press release.

The Dayton-area senators and senator-elect on the committee are: Keith Faber, R-Celina; Gary Cates, R-West Chester; Bill Beagle, R-Tipp City and Chris Widener, R-Springfield.

Others on the committee include incoming Senate President Tom Niehaus, R-New Richmond; Jimmy Stewart, R-Albany and Tim Schaffer, R-Lancaster.

The screening committee will make a recommendation to the Republican caucus which will make the appointment.

Husted was elected secretary of state on Nov. 2 and will leave the Senate in January to take his new job.

The 6th District includes the cities of Centerville, Miamisburg, Oakwood, Englewood, Clayton, Moraine, Brookville, Farmersville, New Lebanon, Phillipsburg, Union, Vandalia, West Carrollton, Germantown and parts of southeast Dayton and parts of Huber Heights, Kettering and Riverside. Butler, Clay, German, Jackson, Miami, Perry and Washington townships are also in the district.

Applicants for the Senate seat, all Republicans, are:

Rep. Peggy Lehner, R-Kettering

Rep. Seth Morgan, R-Huber Heights

Dr. David Westbrock of Washington Township, a former U.S. House candidate

Lara Norris of Washington Township, chair of Republican Ken Blackwell’s 2006 campaign for governor

Has anyone who lives in Columbus or for that matter Toledo or any other city applied for the job. Location should not matter since it didnt matter for Husted.
