Strickland grants clemency in 43 cases

Gov. Ted Strickland on Tuesday granted 37 pardons and six commutations but denied 334 other applications for clemency.

Not including Death Row commutations, Strickland has granted clemency in 160 cases and denied it in 689. Several hundred more applications for clemency are still pending and the governor said he plans to announce more clemency decisions later this week.

Strickland has released his clemency decisions in batches, beginning in November 2009. The latest batch includes six pardons and one commutation for people who committed crimes in the Miami Valley.

Strickland granted a commutation to Ernesto Escalante-Bartolon, 33, who was convicted of forgery and identity fraud in Butler County. His sentence reduction is contingent on Escalante-Bartolon leaving the country and not returning.

Strickland granted pardons to: James Lee Preston, 63, who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in Greene County, Ramon Cardona, 32, who was convicted of burglary in Warren County, David Todd, 50, who was convicted of petty theft in Montgomery County, James F. Hudgins, 36, who was convicted of burglary and receiving stolen property in Montgomery County, Adam C. McAallister, 29, who was convicted of burglary and theft in Warren and Hamilton counties, and Daniel Doyle, 35, who was convicted of burglary and theft in Miami and Shelby counties.

Strickland went against the Adult Parole Board recommendation on 26 clemency applications in this latest batch: denying clemency to three applicants who the board said deserved clemency and granting clemency to 23 that the board recommended against.

“I take very seriously my authority over executive clemencies and the opportunity to give second chances to those who have earned them. This critical process in our justice system offers mercy to individuals who have illustrated that they are ready to regain positions as productive and responsible citizens in our society.  Executive clemency power also realigns unusually long sentences with similar cases, ensuring that our sentencing process is fair and just,” Strickland said.

Ohio has one of the worst records of over incarcerating our citizens. Throwing people in prison does nothing to reform them. Keeping them labeled for decades is even worse. I applaud Mr. Strictland. These people deserve a second chance.

Future Democrat voters will remember this day. The Democrat party is pressing for criminals to be returned to the voting polls after a conviction. The Democrat psychologist ex-Governor has given his excuses for pardoning his cronies…those now indebted to him to convince those around them to vote Democrat in the future. Democrats are vultures…always looking for carrion. You thought Republicans were the purveyors of payola?….think again. Complete corruption is such an easy way for Democrats to swoop in and eat from the decay they’ve caused. It’s natural and tasty to them. The stench they cause is not an odor…it’s a “scent” to them to be remembered as a pleasant thought. Good bye, Ted. I just wish your odor would go with you.
