Democrats protest Republicans’ rejections of former Gov. Strickland’s appointments
By: Lucas Sullivan, Staff Writer
COLUMBUS - Senate Democrats are formally protesting Senate Republicans’ unprecedented rejections of former Gov. Ted Strickland’s appointments to various boards and commissions.
Included in the rejections was former Dayton mayor Rhine McLin, whom Strickland had appointed to the Ohio Lottery Commission last month. The rejections are rare, as previous Senates have routinely stamped the outgoing governor’s appointments during lame-duck sessions.
The rejections allow Gov. John Kasich to select people he wants to fill the positions and certainly feeds the hyper-partisan atmosphere that continues to escalate at the Statehouse.
Senate Democrats believe Republicans have raised “serious constitutional questions,” though it is unclear what impact their protest will have, if any.
“This is another disappointing example of partisan politics in the Ohio Senate,” Senate Minority Leader Capri S. Cafaro, D-Hubbard, said in a press release. “Many of these appointees have already proven themselves to be outstanding public servants.”
McLin said she wasn’t aware of the rejection, but said “It means I won’t be on the Ohio Lottery Commission. I guess my biggest concern is the new Republican administration is not showing any respect to the office of the outgoing governor. I have concerns with that.”

Rhine Mclin has never been charged with any illegal behavior, Rob0 your getting her mixed up with former Gov.Taft and his Repu cronies! I know you like to paint all African leaders as criminals but C.J McLin was a respected Civil Rights leader, business leader and congressman, your getting him confused with House of wheat also on Gettysburg ave. and as a resident of Dayton she did a heck of a lot better job than that sorry Litzel, who barely works 1day a week and getting a free ride off the tax payer of Dayton!!

@joe gilson So joe, please tell us what corruption has occured.Repeatedly the Republicans are accused of corruption so I would like to know what crimes they are charged with or have been convicted of.Maybe if the left would quit hating and give our newly elected officials a chance to do the job they might find that the job gets done well.Instead merely days after being sworn in it’s the same old mantra from the left,Republicans are corrupt,Republicans hate the poor,Republicans are evil, and the list goes on.I would ask those on the left to look inside and think about the hateful things they say and the lies they spout. It’s easier to hate than think folks, try thinking a little bit.

Agree with Bengalsin2011, Bill, Paul,TeamTed and others. Two types of corruption exist, to help people and to profit from it.Democrats care for our people, republicans only for some.

I’m an independent, but let’s give Kasich a chance. I’m almost sure he’s crashing and burning very quick as any hyper-partisan ideologue has before him (see Obama). I think people leave this state because it’s a miserable piece of real estate with the snow and the dying cities, and has little to do with taxation. Furthermore I think our governments need the tax money, but if the state government thinks it will work let’s wait and see. If I don’t see job growth in the next 2 years I’ll probably vote Obama for 2012, if I see tea party politics working then I’ll support a conservative for POTUS in 2012. Kasich, we’re watching!!!

Maybe this will put an end to lame duck activity - appointments, pardons, and raiding of the pantry. I heard that all the pens and pencils were removed from state buildings in December.

@paul Oh yes,I almost forgot about you paul. You are big on insulting the people that don’t agree with your viewpoint,it really gets old.As for regurgitating lies, spin, and misinformation, you seem to do a fine job of that. There has not been found one single connection of the killer in Tucson to talk radio,Fox news,or any news organization for that matter. The man was mentally ill. From the Washington Post- “Two law enforcement sources said that FBI agents had found a 2007 letter from Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) to the shooting suspect, with the words “Die, b***h” and “Die, cops” scrawled on it. The letter, which thanked [Jared] Loughner for attending an event of hers, was found in a safe in his Tuscon home, the sources said. In 2007, there was no Tea Party movement and Sarah Palin was the obscure, recently elected governor of Alaska. If anything, the overhead heated political rhetoric at the time was coming from the left and was directed largely at President George W. Bush. It is time for all those whose reflexive reaction was to capitalize on this tragedy by blaming their political opponents (eg. the New York Times editorial page, the Daily Kos and Paul Krugman) to start issuing some apologies. They can start with Sarah Palin.” But heaven forbid you should look at the facts instead of spouting off the lies about something you really don’t know about.I bet you said a lot of violent things about President Bush didn’t you? The left sure did and the Democrats in Congress and Senate were very disrespectful to him constantly.Harry Reid-“President Bush is a liar. He betrayed Nevada and he betrayed the country.” In 2004, Democrats delivered a “Chorus Of Boos” during Bush’s Bush’s State Of The Union when he called for renewal of the Patriot Act., according to the Washington Times. More-In 2005, Dems howled, hissed and shouted “No!” when Bush pushed for Social Security reform in the SOU: “Foreshadowing the contentiousness of the coming debate, Democrats broke decorum and booed twice,” according to the National Journal. At the time, CNN’s Bill Schneider remarked, “It was unusual. I had never heard it at least at that level before. The Democrats clearly were booing, heckling, saying no when the president talked about the crisis in Social Security. And, as the topper, remember when Democrats used to give tickets to groups like Code Pink so that they could go in and disrupt events like Bush’s inauguration and his state of the union addresses? People like Cindy Sheehan and Medea Benjamin have been given access to events by Democrats for the express purpose of disrupting them.”Why weren’t you upset about that? Your heart is filled with hatred for anyone who thinks or believes differently than you. It’s all okay though since you know(and the Democrats) what’s best for us all and for this country.

I think it is perfectly normal for a new governor to make changes of appointees made by the outgoing governor. No big deal. I expect support for smaller govt., Ohio/Kasich action for ending the healthcare bill. I reject the political correctness of today and the Democrat effort to control talk radio. If I choose to be predjudice against the Islamic Cult because it displaces the reality of the real God- Jesus Christ, it is my right as an individual. If I want my High School to keep the name Talawanda Braves instead of some stupid neutral name, it is my right!

TeamTed, 16,000 jobs aren’t being sent to other states to work on rail projects. California is in bad shape with their high-speed railroad and one has to wonder if it’ll survive Cali’s serious fiscal problems. At the end of the day the 3C+D would have created some jobs, but those few permanent jobs would have been significantly less than what you cited and not worth a minimum $17 Million subsidy. Warm in Flordia, when the hurricane comes let’s hope you heed warning and leave town. I don’t want to see you stranded on your blown-off roof blaming the Republican gov. for not taking care of you while you had a hurricane party with all your friends when others around you were leaving town.

Horace- Yes, elections have consequences but what you are so ineloquently talking out of your rectal orifice about is party over common sense. Example? Bu$hes do-boy, Doinaheckuvejob Brownie. Micheal Bloomberg pulled this same crap and put a crony from BFE in charge of snow removal of NYC- we all saw how that turned out the first time it snowed there. Here in Florida we have hurricanes, our newly elected criminal, Mr. I Stole Billions From Medicare Scott, appointed the head of Walmart Emergency Management to head Florida Emergency Management. Did I mention that we have hurricanes? What hurricane magnitude emergency can possibly ever happen at any given at any given time? He also appointed the head of a shipard to the head of Florida Dept. Environmental Protection. Did I mention I live in Florida? You know, that tropical place, beaches, Evergladess, the Keys, ect you know, areas that need protected? People like you need to wake up, how is your party line stance going to work out for ANY of us, Republican, Democrat or Independent in the end with these purely party line crony appointees? Oh, I remember, Heckofajob Brownie. He worked out SO well, didn’t he? Get a grip! I am a Dem and I will NOT move out of the state I love. I understand politics is politics and there is a lot of backstabbing, but there is such a thing as respect for the office and respect on certain procedures that is happens in Government. There are times when elected officials do need to put political differences aside for certain appointments and this administration is not following suite. It does start with small things like appointments for various boards/ commissions. In Government, there are times when politicians need to realize that not all of their constituency is not like them, everyone is different and that is the beauty of this country. The Kasich administration needs to remember that they did not win by a landside and Ohio is a diverse state. It makes me sad the people of Ohio will have to suffer from the ignorance and rude ways of Kasich. By the way, before Kasich took office on Monday, he already hurt Ohio by the following: *Sent 16,000 rail jobs to other states *Concealed public records from the public *Charged taxpayers for improvements to his home Her is you “New Day” Ohio!

Why do some counties in the Miami Valley allow their county Veteran Services to blatently waste tax payer money and resources? When you have a director who does all of his online shopping on the county computer, on county time… that is, when he even shows up for work…. then there is a problems. Complaining to the Veterans Board is a complete waste of time. They know what’s going on and totally ignore it. This is a disgrace. If my tax dollars are funding this program then I expect the directors and staff to know the answers to my questions, be able to provide the correct forms, and simply be greeted politely when I go to their agency. Is that too much to ask?

It brings a “smirk” (less than a smile) to my face to witness the gnashing of teeth, the vitruol, the chicken little cries and brays (as in sheep/goats…animals that follow…not fallow) of “the world is ending” from you Ohio socialists. Well..let’s think this through. If we do, we’ll have to leave out Democrats…as they’re fixated on “Rainman” objects (being a “good driver”…”sparkly things”…and flying Quantas Airlines…which isn’t done in the internal U.S….which proves how “out there” they are). Democrats are indignant that the apparachick proletariat operatives that promote the “nanny state” are being removed from power by the new Governor. I don’t know about anyone else, but if there’s a zit on my a$$, I will remove it immediately…one way or the other. What part of partisan politics don’t you socialists understand? You created it in your own self images…and when it put in motion, you complain? You know..you ARE sore losers…but as your puss filled zit is removed from all of our a$$e$…we’ll no longer be sore.
