Poll: Ohio voters oppose tax hike; don’t believe Kasich’s “no-tax” pledge
Ohio voters oppose raising taxes to balance the state budget, but they don’t believe new Republican Gov. John Kasich will be able to keep his no-take hike pledge, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday.
Voters oppose a tax hike, 61-34 percent, but say by a 58-28 percent spread that they don’t believe Kasich can keep his promise not to raise taxes.
Also, they say, 50-42 percent, that Kasich shouldn’t have made the pledge.
Nearly half - 48 percent - are undecided about how he’s doing the job he began on Jan. 10. 30 percent approve and 22 percent disapprove.
Overall, however, they’re more optimistic than pessimistic, 59-29 percent, about the next four years with Kasich in office.
On an issue that’s already rising to the top of the Statehouse agenda, voters appear cool to Kasich’s proposals to limit the ability of state and local government workers to bargain collectively.
By a 51-34 percent spread, they say it’s a bad idea.
Also, they say, 51-36 percent, that eliminating the estate tax - another Kasich proposal, backed strongly by Republican legislators - is a bad idea.
They’re clearly with the governor on no tax hikes for the state budget, however. By a 53-32 percent spread, they say they would rather cut services than raise taxes to balance the budget.
They’re aware of budget problems.
Ninety six percent say the budget problems are “very serious” or somewhat serious”, with the state facing a revenue shortfall estimated at $8 billion or higher.
Ohio voters, however, oppose a number of possibilities for balancing the state budget:
*46-43 percent against laying off state workers.
*51-30 percent against leasing the Ohio Turnpike to a private company.
*51-33 percent against hiring a private company to run state prisons.
“For the most part, Ohioans are not receptive to a number of proposals that would cut spending or sell state assets as a way to balance the budget,” Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, said in a press release.
“Gov. Kasich has a serious selling job on his hands when it comes to convincing the people of Ohio on the wisdom of his ideas.”
The poll was taken Jan. 12 through Monday, Jan. 17, with 1,299 registered voters statewide and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.7 percentage points. Live interviewers made the calls to land lines and cell phones.

In response to comments made regarding estate taxes, why should anyone feel that they should not have to pay taxes on money or property they received for nothing.Wake up people, you are getting free money. If I inherited something of value,I would have no problem paying taxes on it.

Don’t privatize the gov’t jobs until the Right To Work legislation is passed in Columbus through the legislature and Kasich can sign it or not. It won’t matter because us conservatives run a major majority. Now GOP get busy or you won’t be in there in 2012.

For all of you folks complaining that public employees get free health insurance, that is not true. We have premiums withheld from every paycheck, just like the private sector and they are increasing, just like the private sector. You know not of what you speak…

Yeah Paul, Was it was Repubs who just yesterday accused the other side of being Nazi’s ect. just after your liar-in-chief called for civility? (but never actually taking any personal responsibility for his own words) Why do you even bother with drivel that is so easily disproven? You would never dream of critizing the Left’s behavior, or your Messiah because you know in your petty little heart that independent thought is something your single digit IQ just can’t handle. It must be because of your willingness to follow the left’s template. It is truly sad and pathetic that you hold so tightly on the Dem’s worn out talking points in spite of the available information to the contrary.

Obama is not destroying anything but I can see where the Beck, Palin, Faux noise right wing nut jobs are out regurgitating their verbal diarrhea. It’s sad that that nation discourse is so ruined by the right wing of this nation. It’s also sad there are so many Americans low IQ enough to buy into it.

Paul ex-Daytonian in Florida. Pot meet kettle. Obama is intentionally destroying the insurance industry, the oil industry, and is transforming the auto industry tothe point where it is a shell of what it once was. He has an one way a*s-kssing session with China. Do you care about China’a asbysmal human rights record? Hu is questioned about it, refuses to answer direct questions. Warns the US to mind their own business. Obama only cares about human rights when it politically beneficial for him to do so. You need to deal with today’s problems without blaming Bush, if you can, but I doubt if you can. You parrott well worn Dem B.S. ,no real connection with reality. Dayton has it’s share of problems, but if people like you continue to leave this city, we may actually have a chance to survive.

If we stop helping the so-called poor maybe they will move to some other state that will pay them a salary that will keep them up. I am sick and tire of helping the so-called poor. Get out and get a job or two or three. If you have to move out of state get a bus ticket and go where the jobs are if your not capable of finding one in Dayton. The 30.00/hr auto manufacturing jobs are gone people. You got to be more skilled and educated. If these people made better choices in life before they decided to have kids they know they can’t afford and can’t spend time with to raise and the like this country would be better off. Just look inside the inner city neighborhoods and you can find plenty of young adults with kids and no job talking on their cell phones and smoking cigarettes that cost 50.00/carton. Priorities are mixed up.

As I reacall GW Bush not only ran on a platforn stating very clearly that because of his business experience he was going to run the country like a large company. He stated it once again as he named his cabinet appointees. Okay. Only one problem, GW Bush destroyed every business he ever put his hands into the till of. Gee thanks, you well informed voters! Now here’s Kaysuck, what business was he engaged in prior to running for govenor of Ohio? Oh, that’s right, Lehman Brothers- that worked out well, did it not? He had his own propoganda outlet on Faux Noise, “Heartland With John Kasich”. Wow, great credentials, once again, thank you , uninformed voters…

Mike: One of the problems we have is that the incompetent with no business experience whatsoever (as an example - Hussein Obama) make policies and dictate to businesses like mine what we should do and how and when we should do it. Most of the govt clown leaders have to concept how to run an orgnization effectively and efficiently achieving maximum results quickly pleasing the paying customer (taxpayer). Dems are particularly the worst though many Repubs are not far behind (Voinovich & DeWine). This isn’t a political Lib/conserv issue. One problem to as you call out is that the destitute never get off the welfare rolls - they don’t want to help themselves. Drive through Dayton or any large city and observe the second, third and even fourth generation of welfare recipients.

First of all, the Quinnipiac University poll is very well respected and used all over Ohio and other places. This poll was reported in all of the major Ohio newspapers. The problem with Kasich is that he says things first, then he thinks about them. Is it fiscally responsible to cut taxes when you are 8 billion in the whole? I know some of you will say it is the public employees fault but, even if you fire every single employee of the State of Ohio…you only cut that 8 billion dollar hole in half. Then you have no Troopers, no prison guards, no one to child support collectors and so on. So, you cannot blame the public employees totally. Everyone wants cuts in spending…unless it is your program that is beign cut. Do you want to let criminals go from prison? Do you want to help less poor or elderly get health care? Do you want to sell the state parks? Do you want abolish the Highway Patrol? Do you want to close universities and colleges? Perhaps eliminate the state funding for education? You need to realize that state cuts most likely equal local taxes rising. Cuts to state funds that go to locals will result in the layoffs of police and fire, is that OK in today’s heroin explosion? Cuts to education will result in increases locally, is that what you want? Be careful what you wish for….

Ok, what in the world is a Quinnipiac University and why would the Dayton Daily News publish such an obscure poll? I know…because it bashes the Republican governor and we all know the liberal media jumps on every opportunity to create dissent where there is none.

@R U Kidding Me: The problem with running government like a business is that government is NOT a business. You run your business so that it makes you a profit out of providing a good or a service. Government should be run more like a not-for-profit organization as it is not their duty to make a profit. Their duty is making sure roads and infrastructure in general are in good condition so that YOU can have a business, making sure our kids get good education to provide good workers to businesses, providing the destitute with the means of becoming a taxpaying part of society, etc. Kasich running the state as a business makes no sense, however the thought of it makes all cons here jump in joy.

All the rich should not hire people like karon. She is brilliant. Lets lose even more jobs to other countries. Karon wants to build trains in a city with only 160,000 people as if Dayton has traffic issues like large major cities. She probably doens’t pay taxes, lives with her parents and will never have a good job but she does think it would be cool to ride a train so all of us should pay for it. Karon, please do all of us a favor and move on to a new topic or better yet move to a city that has a train.

….and Karon what exactly is wrong with running Ohio like a business. You mean he won’t spend money that he doesn’t have, that he’ll have principles and morals as the basis to serve the tax payers - his customers and realize we pay his salary and even possibly appreciate us? WOW!! Government for too long has pandered to society’s losers, the takers and not the makers. We don’t need and can’t afford any more riduculous govt spending and he knows that (that includes trains too), he also realizes we are already taxed too much and the problem isn’t on the income side with the govt its on the spending side. Businesses He is going to bring govt back down to reality where real people and businesses live every day. When my business’s gross revenue falls 50% as it has done from 2008 to 2010 then I cut my expenses 50% as well. Not a hard concept except for those in government

Under Obama’s watch: FEDs are monetizing our national debt. They are pumping trillions of dollars into our economy. That’s part of the reason that gas, oil, food prices, energy, everything is going up—because our dollar is now worth less than it was—IT’S CALLED INFLATION, and it is due to the FEDS printing more money. Also under Obama’s watch: “Energy costs will necessarily skyrocket”—Obama put a stop to oil drilling on our coasts, and his cohorts are trying to outlaw use of coal. This will directly cause our energy costs to continue to SKYROCKET! Use of ethanol has eaten up the corn that use to feed livestock. It costs more for gas for the trucks, it costs more for the corn now, and so now our food costs are skyrocketing! This is all under Obama’s watch (not Bush). The additional of over 1 trillion dollars for just the hc bill alone has alarmed our bank (CHINA) to warn Obama not to pass the law, but he did it anyway. Now China is visiting us, and I wonder what they are talking about!!! Our landlord (CHINA) is about to pull the rug from under us. We are now indebted to China, and this administration has done nothing except contribute to the disaster by its out of control spending spree at our country’s expense. They aren’t hiding anything by monetizing our debt. It will all catch up to us. STORE UP ON FOOD, PEOPLE. FOOD COSTS WILL SKYROCKET. Skyrocket use to be a good word. Not anymore. Now it is Obama’s slogan on everything bad for our country.

I wasn’t polled, but when it comes to the budget, Kasich is the guy you want. City and state government workers need to start paying for their health insurance…Share the pain. Taxpayers, especially those in private sector are paying TWICE for healthcare: for theirs and for the city and state workers!

Tin Foil Beenie—your name says it all. Do you have any thoughtful original comments that could contribute to solving our problems, or are you just there to blow wind at people who really care about this mess we are left with? And yes, Obama has done a great disservice to our country. He has trampled our constitution and laws. As a lawyer, he can’t say he didn’t know what he was doing to this wonderful country by his abuse of power. I heard that he is now going to use executive order to “sanitize” our laws. He sounds more like a king or dictator than the leader of this Republic. We are still a Republic, you know, at least for now. We cannot allow a minority drive away the rights of the majority. We must stand behind our new reps who are trying to undo the harm Obama and his cohorts have done. Meanwhile, I don’t trust Obama to clean my toilet let alone run this country.

With the national economy a mess for the last 10 years, I don’t think the Governor of Ohio can do much. I do know that Kasich was instrumental in causing many of Ohioans retirement systems to lose hundreds of millions, while him and his Wall Street cohorts were laughing all the way to the bank.

Why would anyone take a poll after the new governor elect has been on the job only two weeks. Governor Kasich has a mess to clean up after two loons that held the position before ie: Taft and Strickland. Voinovich was a Rhino and really we the buckeye’s of Ohio sent him to D.C. and he wasn’t that effective in that capacity or position. So please give Kasich a little more time and remember his new policies take time to become effective. Lets just hope and pray that change that we wanted for our great state isn’t like the change the clown in D.C. has done for our country as a whole.

We’re better off with Kasich than we were with Stricknine. Who believes that when a person dies, that their fortune should go to the government instead of to their family or the wishes of the deceased? What gives our government any right to take possessions of any kind from its citizens? There should be NO estate tax whatsoever. All of this talk about lowering taxes for the rich is propaganda from the left. I’m a poor girl, and I still recognize it when I see the government stealing possessions from its citizens. Even if a person is rich, it is still not right.
