Rep. Maag introduces “sexting” bill
Rep. Ron Maag, R-Salem Twp., has introduced legislation - House Bill 53 - to address “sexting” - the issue of minors sendng nude photographs and videos through cell phones and other mobile devices.
“This is a growing problem that could affect many of our teenagers’ lives,” Maag said Thursday in a press release.
“The current law isn’t an adequate way of dealing with those under 18 years old who participate in the act, so the definition of sexting must be clarified in the Ohio Revised Code.”
The bill would make the offense a first degree misdemeanor, with a penalty of no more than six months in prison and a fine of more than $1,000.
Currently, teenagers who commit the offense could face more serious felony charges and be defined as sexual offenders for life, the press release said.
Similar legislation was introduced in 2009.
